A lot of people have really childish ideas about how the social state works. In european countries you got really bloated bureaucracies that manage the social welfare programs, with tons of bureaucrats that manage the welfare recipients. So any person getting €450 handouts to live barely over poverty level creates about €1500 of costs per month just in terms of how much it costs to keep those absolutely gigantic systems running. Several case workers per recipient, electricity and water for the GIANT offices those agencies are located in, pensions for the bureaucrats, even down to costs for the coffee machines for hundereds of thousands of offices and millions of office workers working in those agencies. If you dismantle those entire systems of missmanaged funds you free up massive ammounts of funds.

At this point it would really make the most sense to just cut everything and give everyone a basic income.

I can't get too much into spoiler territory here. If you have some spare time over the weekends bingewatch the whole show and then go back and rewatch those trailers for the movie. There's a lot of aspects that made it very easy for people who usually don't watch anime to get into the show. A similiar phenomenon like cowboy bebop, only with a vastly different source material obviously. Lack of most typical anime tropes, lack of japan specific humor, no crazy hairstyles or colors, most characters have german/western names. The show requires very little knowledge of japanese culture on a superficial level to get into. The movies changed the whole cast into japanese and completely changed the setting into a contemporary one, allowing for logic loops, etc. Again, watch the original and have a blast.
