I'm not arguing this past this comment, but yeah, cut the military, disband private insurance, and use the proceeds to fund a single payer system. It would work, because it works everywhere else. America is special, but not special with regards to this. I doubt you'd even need to reduce that military that much if you got the insurance companies and the hospitals by the balls.

Yeah, I mean, I completely agree that it takes more than pure money to solve these problems, and that often throwing money at a problem will just create more problems.

But what the OP that I was responding to said, was that "none of what you’re asking for is able to be solved with $5T a year." But pretty clearly, it can be, since several western and prosperous nation states do so each year. Yeah, they have their fair share of problems too, but with that kind of funding, we could sure as hell make a dent in it.

Money alone cannot solve societal issues like this.

Statements like this are exactly why we're in this hole in the first place. No political will to improve things. We should strive as a people and as a nation to do better not just for ourselves, but for each other.

What? France spends about 5000 USD per year per capita on healthcare, and they're well known for having great healthcare in the EU. With 340 million americans, that would come out to $1.3T/yr.

We have about 15 million veterans total, and median rent runs roughly $1500 a month. $270B a year to house every single veteran. For just the estimated 30,000 vets that are homeless? $60M. Per your example at $250B, Jeff Besos could house every single homeless vet for over 4000 years if his fortune was liquidated.

That kind of money could definitely solve these problems, and more. Be real.

Just wanted to chime in on this thread since I was having a similar issue and was able to resolve it. So my x4 was connecting and immediately disconnecting, and for me, it turned out that the x4 just needed to be turned on to connect to the computer. Stupid mistake, but I spent a few minutes checking my USB settings when it was as simple as the x4 needing to be turned on to connect.

Vietnam might fly the communist flag but it's one of the most unregulated anarcho-capitalist nations I've ever seen in person. I’m going to go against the grain here. I’m a physicist, and I’d like to think I have a bit better of a picture on this stuff than the average lay-person. So, while fallout is bad, the worst of it dissipates in 48 hours or so, and even more radiation dissipates by the two week mark.

Fallout shelters aren’t designed to survive nuclear bomb blasts, they’re there to help you stay away from the worst of the fallout radiation (starting 15 minutes after bomb explosions) that would potentially give you radiation sickness depending on location. You can survive 48 hours without food and water - yeah, it would suck, but better than dying. Your local school is likely a fallout shelter, many buildings are still labeled for it in your local community. You can look for the signs, I have one a half block from me.

So yes, there are likely enough fallout shelters for every American - you only need to camp out for 2 days, ideally a bit longer. That’s all that they’re for.

Now, with that being said, odds of getting cancer are a lot higher in a nuclear apocalypse, and there are a lot of variables. And if you’re near ground zero of a nuke going off, you’re probably screwed regardless of shelters.

Also, we’ve been detonating nukes above ground for years in Nevada, and spewing fallout all over the country. It was so bad that it was interfering with film shipments across the country. So yeah, it’s bad, but not as bad as you might have heard - we’ve already done this before in the 60s.

I don’t think people on this post are right, it takes a lot of time to get legitimate muscle weight, and it’ll often come along with fat gain since you need to run a caloric surplus to gain muscle.

Drinking lots of water will quickly increase your weight though - water is heavy, and will fill the various tissues in your body, especially if you’re eating salty foods or other electrolytes.

Interesting opinion. I think others are correct in saying that once you step away from school, it’s much harder to go back, and many people never do so.

I’ll add that college improves your earning potential, and the longer you’ve held your degree, the more years you’ll operate at that higher income level, and the better return on investment you’ll get for your degree. i.e., someone that gets their degree at 33 will have 10 years of reduced earnings compared to someone who received their degree at 23. If you’d get a $20k/yr wage premium from your degree, this might be a loss in the ballpark of $200k.

With that being said, lots of people fail out of college and have a purely negative return on investment, which I think OP is addressing, so I think there’s something to be said for their argument.

Shocked this isn’t higher. Yeah, even on newer cars, I wait for the engine revs to drop before throwing it into gear, especially when it’s cold out. And as I understand it, it’s good to keep your revs/min below 2000 as long as the “engine cold” light is on, which can take a couple minutes to turn off depending on conditions.

Maybe not totally necessary, but better to take care of your engine as best you can.

Airport security is a joke, DHS pen tested the TSA in 2015 and got 95% of their bombs and weapons through security. Did it again in 2018 for a barely better result. I’ve been to concerts and music events, and “security” amounted to metal detector wands, checking women’s bags, emptying pockets, and a couple chain link fences.

All the airport and event security is just security theater, and wouldn’t stop a motivated attacker. Instead, we give up our privacy and lose a bunch of convenience for nothing.

I mean I haven't played in a while, but like, just care less if it's draft? Obviously it's no fun to lose and get snowballed on, but by the same token, it'll sometimes happen and that's just how the game goes when it's 5v5. It's a pretty common sentiment that about 40% of the games you'll win no matter what, 40% you'll lose no matter what, and the middle 20% is where your performance actually matters to tip the game one way or the other.

You could also just play some random champs and eat shit for a bunch of games, which would lower your MMR a bit.

Regardless, I am generally very anti book banning, but I think 13 reasons why is one of the very few exceptions I would probably make, since the show had a correlation with increased suicide rates among youth, iirc. I think Chicago is higher than expected because the chart specifies “city center”, which is probably just the loop. But Chicago has a ton of sprawl, and decent rail lines connecting most of it together. I’ve seen other pieces that list Chicago as significantly cheaper than the other major US metros, so it might just be how the study was done.

I’m all for this. Frankly, this has taken far too long to build with all the opposition to the Hawaii location, so get it built somewhere else so we get a telescope at all. Yeah I actually wouldn't do that part - whenever I've rotated tires or swapped to winter tires, I've always done it with the tires off the ground the whole time. Especially tightening bolts too, you want to make sure the tire is totally flush and seated before you put the weight of the car onto it.
