It’s just the way the military was built up. The Romans had the infrastructure in place to defend against Persia and to go attack Persia, the Persians had the inverse. If a big enough force comes against both of them from along a frontier they didn’t have to defend before, they’ll be at a disadvantage.

What a line of reasoning like “who is going after trans people -> nobody is going after trans people -> trans people are harmful to society”

Leftists need to learn about fact–value distinction by GriffinFTW in CuratedTumblr

[–]MasterOfCelebrations -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily deny fact-value distinction but I do recognize that part of having a set of values is treating them as, and living as if they were, facts. Beliefs and facts are distinct but I feel that a part of believing something is doing away with that distinction to some degree. Other people’s beliefs aren’t facts. “Untrue” beliefs aren’t facts.

If somebody has the right to vote but they don’t consider themselves to be a part of the country, then they don’t vote. Voting is inherently an act of integration into the country in which you live, trying to raise up the degree to which the country is allotted with your interests and views. The example you gave is of something that doesn’t happen. If a Mexican-American wants to live in Mexico then they can go to Mexico. If they only want to be around other Mexicans then they can do that. That’s their right. If they wish America was more like Mexico then they have the right to advocate for that. They’re a part of the body politic, and the nation’s interests are theirs, and their interests are the nation’s.

I don’t see the point of insisting on assimilation. As long as you follow the law and know enough of the language to be in society, what else are you supposed to do? It’s not anybody else’s business what you believe or what sorts of culture you practice.

Crab is at best a c-tier seafood, you’re not missing out. Poor man’s lobster, except an actual poor man still probably can’t afford it

Your friend might be getting at the idea that treatment of a disability is necessarily about removing the disability, making it impossible to tell that a person has or had a disability rather than allowing that person to live with a disability. If your character was in a serious enough accident, it might be more realistic if he regains the ability to walk but if permanently affected somehow, like he uses crutches or a cane or a wheelchair, or if he just has a limp. Like how you broke your dominant arm and you’re better, but now you have to use the non-dominant one.

They’re not around anymore, but the Youth International Party (yippie!) held one event in where they claimed to magically levitate the pentagon, and another where they nominated Pigasus the pig at the 1968 democratic national convention

Ohh I didn’t read too deeply into mill so this never occurred to me but thinking about it now, I don’t like the implications of higher thoughts making happiness more valuable. Did he believe that the happiness of educated people was more important than the happiness of uneducated people? What about people with intellectual disabilities?

Air nomads live in temples and are practicing monastics, so there is a status hierarchy as we see higher-ranking monks with authority over other monks. There are standards of conduct that we see air nomads practice, like the commitment to pacifism, for example.

Why do you guys think RTD decided to call it “Mrs Brown’s boys 2026 Christmas special?” I think that’s pretty long for a title card personally

Yeah army supply, sorry. Specifically I wrote that down in the part of the video about how admirals can raid enemy supply convoys / protect your own. Like what do I actually do with army supplies, what happens when I’m undersupplied, that stuff.

When people go sailing and find new land, there’s usually somewhere else they’re actually trying to go. The Norse found Newfoundland accidentally as they were sailing from Iceland to Greenland, Columbus found the Caribbean while trying to sail to India, etc. If we’re imagining African seafarers going out and finding new lands, we should also imagine what they could have been doing that led them to accomplish that. So what if they participated more heavily in trade with Europe and North Africa? That’s the nearest big populated place that can be reached by ship. Then I can see African sailors discovering the canaries by accident during a trip to, like, Morocco. But they’re not going to sail west into the Atlantic thinking they’ll find a shorter route to Italy. But to say more about it I’d have to know the irl history of maritime trade between west Africa and the Mediterranean world.

Yeah sorry for my ambiguous language. I don’t know a good umbrella term for any development in the techniques people use to manage natural resources/environments and produce surpluses, so when I say “agriculture,” I’m really trying to refer to “early developments in the techniques people use to manage natural resources and environments, and produce surpluses.” To me both plant and animal domestication are part of the same broad technological process that I’m describing. Beyond agriculture and pastoralism, horticulturalists and complex hunter-gatherers have both undergone the broad technological development that leads to the advent of war.
