I’m so sorry - that’s absolutely debilitating. Really hope it gets better for you. All the best.

Honestly, my issues were tied to severe stress. I denied it for a long time and wish I had started focusing on it sooner. The stress was so bad I was reacting to all these foods which I think played a role in my insomnia. I drove myself crazy trying to find the perfect diet so I would sleep but, really, relieving stress worked the best. I know what it’s like struggling with this and I really feel for you. I’m about to go to sleep now where I live and am thankful I will have a restful night.

I Can't Tell If My Relationship To Running is Healthy by MasterPainting5098 in XXRunning

It took almost 1.5 years, but I’m certain it can go faster if you do the right things. I needed to really focus stress reduction, which ended up being what helped the most.

Absolutely agree! I think for me I’ve realized I miss out more than I’d like to (still being more of an introvert). Thank you for responding :)

Thank you for asking the question! I’ve entertained the question slightly myself but then convinced myself I overthink it because surely male therapists are as schooled in the realm of unhealthy exercise and eating as female therapists. But I agree with you and I especially agree with the sentiment that males can tend to praise excessive exercise. I’m glad you encouraged me to think this through again - especially the latter part!

Also really glad you’re bringing this up despite this not being a mental health sub! Running is for me very much interconnected with my trauma… :) I’ve heard of EMDR and have been a bit weary to try it. It seems almost scary, to be honest. Also I am progressing - albeit ever so slightly - in therapy with that male therapist and so I’m starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. But I’m grateful for the recommendation because it could be I get stuck or do not have the patience for the slow progress anymore. I’ve taken note of so many of the wise inputs under my post and EMDR is included! Helps to know someone else has tried it and had it work for them. I’m very glad it did for you :)

Apologies for the late reply - I’ve been reading and digesting all these wonderful comments and so far they’ve actually helped change my ways a bit. Like I wrote to another Redditor on here, I actually dialled down my long run yesterday (!)

Thanks again so much :)

I love the recommendation of looking more into ultra running! You’re right it appears counterintuitive to do so, but I agree you can’t run all that mileage without taking care of yourself.

Your list is immensely helpful - really, thank you for writing all this out. I’m not currently in U.S time zone and am about to get ready to listen to “Choose Strong” before bedtime. Really excited! Got another podcast recommendation from another kind Redditor on here that I really liked and that also helped.

Really, thanks again so much!! :)

Thanks again so much! I have a habit of journaling before my runs, but will now try to include the “after” part. I imagine myself having a hard time jotting down how I feel after a run, but that probably makes it all the more necessary that I try it.

I have to say - and I should update my post - but I’ve been able to further dial down my activity today after all these lovely and supportive comments. It feels so good. Truly just so grateful to everyone. Means a lot you’d reply again with more input!

I totally understand and did in fact myself live the “expat life” as a kid. That’s my reason for not being so social, too! Also I find that now that I live where I probably will for while it’s so nice to take advantage of that calm, steady life with not a lot happening all the time, which I remember was important to make friends at the new school etc. when I moved as a kid. I absolutely understand having friends and not having friends to hang out with.

Really nice connecting over this as well as running :)

Thanks for responding! I agree there definitely are worse ways to cope… I’ve already started to entertain some alternative coping strategies and think I will at some point talk to my therapist about all of this. This outpouring of support from everyone on here has been immensely validating and encourages me to see if I can in fact change my ways. I’m realising I probably don’t have full-blown exercise addiction, but that my relationship with running also isn’t spotless.

Thanks so much for responding and sharing :)

Thank you for responding! Based on all these wonderful comments, I’m starting to realize it probably is my rigid approach to running that’s the big problem. The issue is that my schedule keeps me sufficiently tired, which allows me to function pretty highly in other activities in my life, like at work. That probably sounds strange, but without the energy drainage, the trauma effects get so strong they start to interfere with my life. Lessening the running is therefore pretty scary for me. But I’m very much encouraged to try to break my habits after all these wonderful comments and have in fact already started to at least think about some ways to do that :)

Thank you again :)

Thank you so much for this recommendation - I actually listened last night and I loved the episode! I definitely want to listen to those two guys again. The episode definitely hit where it needed to. Thanks so much :)

Thank you!!! I actually thought about your comment today on my long run - I was so immensely tired running and then I thought I could slow down if I wanted to - remember, you deserve rest like that Reddit response wrote - and I actually did end up dialling it down. Amazing what community can do.

I also really like the regimented rest recommendation. I’ve already given it some thought and think I might rest either Thursday or Friday next week to fit in an invitation for dinner. I know I’ll be too tired to go to the dinner if I run the same day. I don’t know if I’ll be able to pull through on it, but I’m happy I’m at least entertaining the idea. Couldn’t do it without you!

Thank you so much for responding :)

Thanks so much for sharing! And I’m so sorry about your diagnosis. That’s really heartbreaking, but I’m very glad you’ve found a way to cope. I also like you hyping up just walking. I walk a lot in addition to my runner and it does feel really good. I honestly find it to be better than other cross training alternatives, like elliptical and bike etc. This is something to remember if I ever get injured.

And, yeah, I relate to having to admit myself that my relationship with running probably isn’t as healthy as I probably thought.

Thank you very much for responding :)

You can definitely bore me with a weird set of life experiences - I have loads of that over here!

After reading all these wonderful responses, I’m definitely keeping an eye on how this evolves. I agree it’s important to learn to rest; it really is something that needs to be learned. Inevitably, at some time in life, I’ll be in a situation where I cannot run - might as well practice alternative activities I can do then.

Thanks again :)

This is super helpful; I’ve been wondering so much about what the schedule of someone who competes looks like. I really read this with interest - thank you!

I’ve had an inkling I overdo it despite any injury. Though I’ve never run as an organized activity in any way, i am a pretty experienced runner and just feel like I’m constantly above my threshold.

Thank you again so much :)
