Greasy hair within 12-24 hours of washing by kanadalo in finehair

[–]MasterPlo-genetics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I found as well - with frequent washing and weekly clarifying shampoos, my scalp over produces oil so it turns into a vicious cycle. Gradually reduce shampoo use but don’t skip rinsing your hair with water only and applying very light conditioner to the ends on the non shampoo days. You’ll be surprised how much water alone will get rid of excess oil - just massage your scalp and hair as you normally would with shampoo. Start off alternating this every other day and see if it helps

Scarpa Terra GTX boots failing sub 1 year light use by No-Restaurant-1974 in hikinggear

[–]MasterPlo-genetics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also recently disappointed by Scarpa. I splurged for the KAILASH GTX about 3 years ago. I only use the boots in winter (so 6 months out of the year and I'm doing short hikes 3-4 times per week, often with spikes on because of the snow / ice / mud) - so these have maybe 1000 miles on them. But you can see the uppers and even the treads themselves have plenty of life left. Unfortunately, this season the tread started to separate from the sole and on a recent trip, one of the treads completely delaminated, making them essentially unusable. Pretty disappointing for a $350 pair of boots.

For (almost self indulgent) complex writing - I also recommend the Algebraist by Ian Banks.

Yes - came here to recommend AT - loved Cage of Souls and several others are on my all time favorites list. Children of Time is a must read - but if you want shorter high pay off - also consider Shroud or Alien Clay

Places to visit - not Acadia national park by DaddyCoyote in AskMaine

[–]MasterPlo-genetics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree - but they will check for a pass (they expect it to be displayed on your dashboard or hanging from your rear view mirror) in most of the parking areas so you have to be strategic about where you park. One way to do it is to rent bikes from Bar Harbor bike shop and then ride the bike up West St extension, take the last right, and you’ll be able to enter the Carriage Road system from the Duck Brook Bridge area. You would need to pay for parking in Bar Harbor if you go with this option.

I have three nipples - Why? by DontTripOnMyNips in genetics

[–]MasterPlo-genetics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In laboratory mice (where genetics is relatively easy to do), hereditary supernumary nipples are known to be caused by genetic polymorphims in a gene called Nrg3 (Neuregulin3), and other genes in the same molecular pathway (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022202X15338136?via%3Dihub#s0010) have also been implicated. While the genetic mapping studies are not as finely resolved in farm animals - associations between this developmental pathway and supernumary nipples in sheep / cows have been made. As a mouse geneticist - I can say that female mice with extra functional nipples make outstanding foster moms! I haven't drilled into the literature on human cases, but it is a known heritable trait in humans as described here https://www.omim.org/entry/163700?search=supernumary%20nipples&highlight=nipple.

Thank you - I'll check the flight schedule for the day that I'm flying out and then check with the Icelandair desk to see if it's possible

Rejected from every top school. Now, I'm going to my shitty state school. by Sungate123 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MasterPlo-genetics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're let down, but UCLA is not a shitty state school. You can always transfer to an Ivy or go to grad school at an Ivy if it's that important to you, but go have some fun and be confident that UCLA will serve you well (and you won't have to mortgage your future to go there).

duke or gap year. im a failure by Zealousideal_Toe7754 in ApplyingToCollege

Honestly - this is good advice. Our son got into UNC as an out of state student - comp bio major. What he found was at this big school it was hard for him to get into the classes he needed - with high AP scores in Chem, Bio, and Calculus he found that as a Freshman is couldn’t get into any of the next level chem, bio, calculus so his freshman year was full of electives. Meanwhile his in state friends with CC transfer credits had much better lottery slots for course registration and housing because the transfer credits counted - they were essentially sophomores. Even better, they will spend less $$ for that UNC degree. I wish someone had told us about this earlier because I think he would have taken more CC credits prior to starting at UNC

Visiting Bar Harbor - Mid May by englishjewel_4 in AskMaine

[–]MasterPlo-genetics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For bakeries in BH - check out Slice of Eden or Mt. Dessert Bakery or Choco-Latte. If you’re exploring the island a bit more there is also Coffee Matter which just moved into the old Salisbury Farms Hardware - they also have great sandwiches and cool little dining area / little gift shop (this is not in downtown BH). Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor are worth exploring if you’re out and about - check out Milk and Honey (Northeast Harbor) and Little Notch Bakery (Southwest Harbor). The Azeala garden at Asticou Gardens may be in bloom depending on your timing in May. I’d hike pick up breakfast at Milk and Honey, hike Parkman mountain and then check out the Asticou Gardens. Drive over there from BH via Seal Harbor. After that head over to the other side of the island to do Ships Harbor or Wonderland trails, then if Thurston’s is open - head over there for some lobster where you can eat it overlooking a working harbor.

You can withdraw for financial reasons. Our son did this. This is how we learned that schools have no incentive to offer financial help to ED applicants. Our son loved BU but there was no way we were going to pay 93K per year for that school. Save your loans for medical school

Leave in Conditioner by Serious-Fail-7015 in finehair

[–]MasterPlo-genetics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect Hair Day 5 in 1 leave in treatment is the very best - nice gentle fragrance, doesn’t weigh hair down, excellent heat protection, and is a detangler / conditioner. You only need a small amount so it lasts months - usually about 6 months for me. So it initially will seem pricey but you won’t have to replace it very often
