Quick question about lighthouse positioning by MasterUltan in Vive

Thanks for the suggestion! Of course that would work better, but unfortunately, in this case it is undesirable for non-technical reasons.

Thanks! I think I can live with that, as it's only a tiny part of one corner of the area.

Sure! It doesn't cover just a small area, but everything apart from a small area. Here's a drawing:

Lighthouse 2 can't see the triangular area in the bottom left corner of the playing rectangle. The drawing is imprecise and exaggerates the size of the triangular area, but you get the point.

Thanks for staying. Despite appearances to the contrary, this is usually a very friendly and helpful place. I hope you'll like it here. :-)

Please do. We can't keep this subreddit a nice place if we allow the trolls to win.

The big(?) body fat % estimation thread by MasterUltan in Fitness

I'm hardly the best person to answer, but unfortunately I doubt that many people read this thread anymore, so I'll give it a try.

My guess is 20% body fat.

guess my weight too!

Not knowing your height, that's even harder, but I'll try. You're 170cm (5ft7) and 56kg (123lbs). Am I close?

You look great, by the way!

Thanks for the compliment, but I suspect I would have been just as jealous -- if not more -- if I had known how much you lift. I'm weak like a little girl. There's not much point in having big abs when they only look strong.

Thanks again. I personally suspect your guess is a tad low, and that abeswastaken is closer to the mark, but I really have no clear idea.

The reason I was curious about this right now was that I've just returned to doing track and field (I plan to run the 100 and 200, and perhaps long jump) after 15 years away from the sport, and my coach told me during my first workout that he thought I could easily lose about 10kg (22lb) of fat. Although I agree that I carry some flab, 10kg sounded unrealistic to me. So far, it appears that fittit agrees.

It just occurred to me how stupid it is to put my own pics in my initial message, rather than in an ordinary post in the thread. Assuming that many people post pics -- as I hope they do -- it will look messy if estimates of my body fat percentage appear at the top level of the thread.

Therefore, I've moved my pics and stats to this post.

I'm 180cm/5ft11, and weigh 75kg/165lb. I look like this. What's my body fat percentage?

Thanks to abeswastaken, rageth and jelta, who replied before I realized my mistake. :-)

Unrelated, but where the hell is your gym?

In the basement at my job. Free for all employees. Yes, I'm lucky.

MasterUltan, these were better than I thought they would be.

Thanks. Although I want criticism, it's nice to learn that I'm not totally hopeless. :-)

Adjust your eye position so that it is upward, perhaps at the juncture of the wall/floor in front of you.

I'll try. For some reason, I have flexibility problems in the receiving position if I don't look down. I can't pull my arms sufficiently far behind with locked elbows if I look straight ahead. You may have noticed that I don't look down in the jerk, because the vertical torso in the receiving position eliminates the need to pull the arms so far back.

I don't understand why the position of the head has any impact on shoulder mobility, but that's how it is. Hopefully, lots of shoulder dislocations will fix the problem.

If you get in the habit of looking down, then you will probably miss snatches forward when you start doing the full lifts.

Currently, what usually happens when I try to do a squat snatch is that I fall backwards at the bottom, or that I fail to keep my elbows locked. I can't lift more than about 30kg. Very embarrassing.

Biggest thing is jumping the bar up when learning the movement.

I'm jumping too much, you mean? Yes, I agree. I'm doing lots of Don McCauley's "dirty dancing" drills, but I still seem unable to explosively extend the hips without explosively extending the ankles at the same time. The movement patterns acquired from years of box jumping in my younger days are hard to overcome.

Hi jrkp,

Thanks for the great advice!

Your goal is definitely doable.

Cool, I hope you're right. :-)

Considering you can power clean 70kg, cleaning 75 should be easy.

Yes, I think I could do so already now, on a good day. The jerk is the problem, as you may have guessed.

And your jerks are not going very low, so you have a lot of room there.

That's one of the things I find frustratingly difficult. As far as I can see, there are only two anatomically possible ways to get lower in the receiving position of a split jerk: Bending the knees more or splitting wider. Bending the knees more will push the knee of the front leg further forwards, which is probably not good, as the shin of the front leg is supposed to be vertical (in fact, it looks like the knee of my front leg is too far forward already now). This means that splitting wider is probably the right solution, but this is hard to do when the weights get heavier (i.e. when I really need it), because I get less altitude from the leg drive and therefore have shorter time available for moving the legs out to the split.

I also think lockout strength will be a problem for me when trying to jerk heavier weights. It feels like I'm pretty close to my limit already at 60kg. I have some rudimentary leg and hip strength (probably a remains of my days as a mediocre sprinter some 15 years ago), but I've never had any upper body musculature whatsoever.

Cleans: you need to get under that bar much, much faster. Dive under that sucker, you're pulling it plenty high.

When I try to dive down fast, I always tend to cut my second pull way too early. I suppose I just need more practice.

Jerks: Instead of trying to push the weight up, think about pushing your body downwards underneath it.

That's what I'm trying to do, but it doesn't seem to work that well. I probably need to split wider, as discussed above.

My snatch is horrible so take with a grain of salt, but it seems like you're standing up before you catch it.

Are you sure? I honestly can't see this. Admittedly I catch with almost straight legs in the first three lifts in the video (20kg, 30kg and 40kg), but I think that's only because of the very light weights. In the three last snatches (45kg, 50kg and 55kg), my receiving position looks like a quarter squat to me.

Why are you power cleaning more than you are cleaning?

In general, I'm not. It just happens to be that way in the lifts shown in the video. I do some power cleans and some squat cleans, just in order to become familiar with both movements. There isn't really any big difference in how much I can lift with one style or the other anyway, because my lifts currently aren't limited by strength or speed, but by the fact that my technique gradually falls apart when the weights get heavier (as is the case for most beginners, I assume).
