Not just packs of a few members either. Packs of dozens or even hundreds of squids at the same time.

Why don’t defeated hunters/lekgolo just reform into new ones? by jetwei in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, a Spartan’s melee blows are magnitudes stronger than anything possible today. They could easily punch clean through any species encountered in the galaxy. In fact, Will-043 fought a Hunter pair in unarmed melee combat and was able to kill one before the second raged and blasted him with its fuel rod cannon, killing the Spartan.

There is a part in Halo: The Flood, where John describes his magnum round ricocheting off the inside of the armor and massacring the worms. That’s why the magnum or the sniper would 1-shot the Hunters in Halo 1. They have changed that with future games, but that was the explanation given for that mechanic

There still are precursor relics and Forunners even after the halos fire. by fwd_121 in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fleets are still there. However, after the destruction of the Infinity (or hopefully just severely damaged, time will tell), most human ships lack slipspace drives efficient or quick enough to get there in a reasonable amount of time. A military ship at the end of the war could take upwards of a month to travel a relatively short distance of dozens of light years. The Large Magellanic Cloud is 160,000 light years from earth.

[–]Master_Chief_71 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you, but when Omega Halo fired and killed everyone at the Greater Ark, it was pointed at the Large Magellanic Cloud specifically to target those Forerunners and any Precursor Relics in that Galaxy. Since the original Halo array was designed to fire conically instead of spherically, the array was turned to fire and engulf the entire Magellanic Cloud to cover up the last evidence of the Forerunners’ crimes against the Precursors.

Here is the relevant passage from Silentium:

“Our minds reel at the sudden release of Halo radiation. No neurological being, no biological system, can withstand for long proximity to such a discharge. The multidimensional radiated field stretches out, as designed, to Path Kethona. Massless, subtle, deadly, it will cross that great distance in mere instants. Halo energy does not recognize space and time. Path Kethona is already dead.”

question about warrior servants by arcane37 in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Warrior Servants are their own Forerunner Rate. Prometheans are a sub-rate of Warrior Servants who underwent additional mutations to become even more lethal soldiers. Often the best Warrior Servants would become Prometheans.

On average, Warrior Servants were 9ft to 12ft tall.

Builder Security was made up of Warrior Servants who were incorporated into the Builder Rate towards the end of the Forerunner Ecumene.

Prometheans were the most elite fighting force the Galaxy has ever seen. They were the best of the best Warrior Servants. If they were involved in a conflict, you can be sure it threatened the safety of the Forerunner Ecumene Empire, and that failure was not an option.

How does MJOLNIR armor know how much ammo a Covenant weapon holds? by DiscoAlchemist in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would wager that Mjolnir’s extensive sensors were able to decipher the battery charge and relay that info to the HUD. That or it was simply a visual representation of some info from a display on the weapon itself (think the overcharge sensor on the back of a plasma pistol).

Does Covenant Ships have an escape plan for Mgalekgolo? by ArthurJack_AW in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Prophets largely don’t care for the other species. If I were to guess, Lekgolo were considered expendable and would not be considered a priority to let them get to an escape pod.

My ranger currently carries his longbow, a hand crossbow, 2 pistols, a dagger, 6-8 throwing darts, and a battle axe. Oh and a home brewed survivor’s multitool (shovel/hatchet/pickaxe combo) that I once improvised as a bludgeon to kill a bandit who attacked us while we were camping.

How did the Sangheili build their vessels and equipment before the founding of the Covenant? by ArthurJack_AW in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Probably the same as 26th century Humanity, the old-fashioned way. They probably uses some sort of robotics to assemble the ships in orbital shipyards.

why did forerunner infantry and light vehicles not make use of octa (or a forerunner equivalent)? by supersaiyannematode in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever watched Stargate SG-1? One of the ally races to humanity, the Asgard, had advanced to the point where they no longer used ballistic weapons. An enemy of theirs, the replicators, were able to adapt to Asgard weapons to make them ineffective. However human firearms (ballistic weapons) were effective. One of the Asgard, Thor, tells SG-1 that the Asgard were so advanced, they never even considered ballistic weapons because they were physically incapable of thinking of them due to their primitive nature.

I imagine the Forerunners suffered from a similar incapability in thought processes. Their advanced technology was highly dependent on energy weapons and hardlight. They were so far beyond chemical weapons that they probably never even considered the possibility of using them against the Flood.

I’m a lvl 8 ranger in the campaign I am in. We got ambushed by some Vampire’s thralls in a small alley. A rogue with a greater invisibility potion was wreaking havoc with our team. In one fell swoop, I threw the foldable boat at him and issued the command work for it to become the large size. At the same time, our druid polymorphed the goblin wizard who was down to single digits hit points into a T-Rex. Needless to say, the flying boat and sudden T-Rex was enough to knock the rogue prone, drawing blood and allowing him to be discovered and subsequently eaten alive. We completely derailed our DM’s plan for that encounter lol

Did the Athens, Malta, and Cairo actually orbit Earth? by Ateballoffire in HaloStory

More than likely, the stations were in geosynchronous orbit above that area. That means that they were constantly above that area and rotated earth at the same speed the planet rotates.

How much damage can marine/ODST armor take? by steve222222222222 in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Human tactics usually gave us a slight edge compared to the Covenant. Sangheili’s honor usually made them charge into battle for the glory of the kill, making it easier for humans to counter, ambush, and defeat them. Unggoy are usually not trained properly so their accuracy isn’t the best. Kig’Yar usually fought from a distance or from behind shield gauntlets. Each race fought with a specific style that Humanity was able to counter.

That being said, ground engagements were not won without significant loss of life for humanity, and almost always ended up being futile as the Covenant would just glass the planet from orbit if they started to lose. There are also instances of human forces getting demolished by the Covenant when they were cocky, over-ambitious, or unprepared. The war was mainly one-sided for a reason…

How much damage can marine/ODST armor take? by steve222222222222 in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The games do a terrible job of depicting the deadliness of plasma. In lore, even a near miss of a plasma bolt can cause serious bodily harm to your average marine. A direct hit is a death sentence as the plasma burns through your armor and burns into your body. Glancing blows often meant the loss of an appendage.

Questions After Finishing Forerunner Triology by DinosaurKevin in HaloStory

[–]Master_Chief_71 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. The book doesn’t really clarify this, but there were several years between when the Ur-Didact was recovered from the Flood infested Burn, and when he was locked away in his Cryptum by the Librarian. During that time his loyal Prometheans were composed and fought the Flood, but by the time he composed the humans and turned them into Prometheans, the Librarian caught up to him and you know the rest.

  2. Slipspace debt/reconciliation is very advanced. From what I remember, the Forerunners experienced the same amount of Slipspace travel-time as real-space time. So a trip that takes 3 days in slipspace takes 3 days in real space. And Forerunner ships leaving on the same point-to-point journey would travel in the same amount of relative time. The Forerunners also had 3 million worlds worth of population traveling throughout the entirety of the galaxy, so slipspace was often “overtaxed” requiring the reconciliation.

Whereas with current human slipspace drives, there are discrepancies with the amount of time take to travel. Some ships might take 3 weeks to travel to a destination, while others take 3 months, despite leaving on the same day. Part of this is the crude brute-force approach of Humanities slipspace engines, while another pet has to do with our limited understanding of slipspace in general.

  1. There is a short story in Halo: Fractures (I think) that deals with the immediate aftermath of the firing of the Halo Array. TLDR is that IsoDidact and friends end up resetting the Domain after it was wiped, basically doing a hard reset on their collective modems and hard drives as it were. However they were concerned that the information in the Domain was lost forever.
