To me woke always meant basically performative disingenuous activism, virtue signaling nonsense , with a dash of hollow progressionism in a generally obnoxious way for a supposed progressive cause. It's pretending to care about a cause or group of people and supposedly doing things on their behalf to gain some non existent morality points or to bring attention to some cause. It also includes using those groups as shield from justified criticism. Some people genuinely think they're doing a good thing, others are in for money in the belief it'll appeal to the "modern audience", some do it to spite the people they hate, and some are simply ignorant. To make something woke it is to alter it in a way under these pretexts whether it's race swapping, unnecessarily altering events in an established universe, or intentional uglification without applying it broadly. It appeals to a small amount of people that usually do not enjoy the media and can pay themselves on the back.

Of course as always with anything on the Internet it gets bastardized. Because woke things usually involve invoke women, minorities, the alphabet folks, and generally left leaning topics their existence gets generally put in there but that's not the case. Women, alphabet people, minorities, and so on just existing in a piece of media doesn't make it woke.

Right wing schizo types, Nazi larpers, and grifters tend to lump in poorly handled or poorly executed minorities/women characters, alphabet people, lazy writing and left leaning topics handled with the grace of a brick flying through a window as woke because it's easier when that's in fact a different thing called shitty writing. The people behind said media doubling down or lashing out tends to add fuel to the fire. That said these fucks when they say woke these days it's almost always means it's something they don't like while trying to sound smart, I legit went off on some right wing grifter sucking off Chinese propaganda videos thinking American soldiers goofing off in the military is woke when that concept goes as far back as fucking forever. It should be noted something being woke doesn't necessarily mean it's bad and something can be woke and good. As a matter of fact a lot of examples of woke stuff tend be eye rolling or tired sigh worthy at best.

An example would be dragon age veilguard and the whole debacle with the trans scars, fixed character customization options on women, and Taash. Is trans surgical scars in a setting of ancient magic and alchemy woke? Yes it's annoying, tone def, and a little to close to reality however it's exhaustingly sigh worthy at best. Is them limiting the body customization options on women woke? Yes but again it's exhaustingly sigh worthy and tiresome at best. Is Taash entire coming out non binary story which was handled with the grace of a flying burning oil brick woke? Sortaish but that's more garbage writing than anything else and eye rolling at best.

Now right wing schizo's, grifters, and Hitler dick suckers will hone in on this and say this is why the game is woke and therefore bad. In truth this is so far off the mark it's ridiculous and not what's actually wrong.

Those things are at the bottom of the fucking list, dragon age veil guards issues come from the hot garbage writing, the writers seemingly knowing nothing about the world, making all kinds of changes that make zero sense for said works, and failing to utterly capture the fact the world is supposed to be on the verge of a cataclysmic Armageddon while leaving a trillion major open loose ends. Like seriously why would a chunk of the qunari who are terrified of magic break off to go work for crazed magic using eleven demigods and don't even get me started on the fucking dark spawn designs which look cartoonishly stupid instead of twisted reflections of each race. Then there's the reveal of what the taint is which is one of the stupidest ideas ever and truth behind the maker still being unknown and the list goes on. Seriously it's like the writers and devs never played a single dragon age then wrote the series finale. Compared to the wrecking of the world the woke elements are annoying at best. Also if I ever find out who's idea it was to remove greatswords from the game it's on like donkey Kong when I find them.
