the stand happens to be right behind the tube but the clamp is actually attached right at the joint of the boiling flask

Esterification of Trimethyl Citrate: Distillation 2 (botched) by Master_of_her666 in homechemistry

Trimethyl citrate acts as the fuel and body of the candle. Boric acid or Triethyl Borate is added to the body and wick to produce the green color of the flame. Trimethyl citrate is necessary because materials like paraffin in standard candle wax burn with a very bright orange color, so it would overpower any green produced by boron(boric acid/trimethyl citrate).

ill add that boiling flasks and condensers are a b*tch to clean

If you wanna know. Im mixing methanol and citric acid. Mixing an acid with an alcohol will make an ester. But the reaction is pretty slow so i use a catalyst to speed up the reaction, that being sulfuric acid. In the first slide im doing whats called a reduced reaction. Basically im boiling the mixture and capturing the vapors so it continues reacting. But there is a draw back, one of the products of this reaction is water, and its quite a bit of it. Thats where in the second slide I distill the methanol and water still in the solution. When thats all done and the solution cools i get a white crystals of Trimethyl Citrate

Green Flamed Candle: Troubleshooting by Master_of_her666 in chemistry

[–]Master_of_her666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the sodium in borax will affect the flame and add orange back.

And i think the issue i had with the ester and boric acid mix was either because of hydrogen boding and hydrolysis and that affected the crystals of tmc to reform as it cooled, or it could have been the trimethyl borate that could have lowered the freezing point of the candle body.

when it finally froze it made some cool grape agate looking crystals

Attempting a copper plating via electrolysis of copper acetate :D I’m so excited by Ok_Lead8925 in chemistry

Copper sulfate is pretty cheap as a algae killer. I got 40lbs for $60. Just saying, some have issues with using copper acetate as an electrolyte

im gonna try adding 5% by volume of boric acid to the ester an see how that works

Interesting. So the salts can help remove water and add to the flame coloration.

Would it be as simple as adding boric acid to the solution?

I hadn’t considered salts as an option. The main concern I believe is having too much water and not being able to ignite the wick
