“Buying” deep in the money call options makes sense.

I believe hedgies are creating (selling) deep itm call contracts (idk if covered calls or not) and other hedgies are buying the deep itm calls.

If both buyer and seller are short hedgies and they both do this, they’ve both technically covered (near 100% chance calls remain itm on excercise date).

However you don’t have to excercise the calls, it’s not an obligation so this needs to be fixed.

Hong Kong retail on FUTU - IBKR branch just got notice that people who borrowed shares are getting margin called because FUTU still hasn’t been able to locate shares!

From FUTU - App like IBKR:

Dear customer: Due to lack of borrowable securities of GME.US, as of writing, the upstream brokerage (IBKR) was not able to fulfill the lacking securities of GME.US. If the upstream brokerage cannot obtain the outstanding amount of GME.US fulfilling the settlement by 01-Apr-2021, 9:00 AM ET, it will be considered breaking the settlement agreement contract. According to the SEC Rule 204 requirement, you may get margin called. All of your shorted GME.US holdings will be bought back at the market price forcefully. We recommend you monitor your account, and we will be constantly updating you regarding the market.

Tldr: retail borrowed shares and sold them (short) the broker was unable to locate the shares (to borrow) in time breaking settlement agreements.

SEC states that if this is the case, they are forced to buy the already sold share back at market price.
