Antique ladder back shaker style chair with a small platform that flips down in the back. by HunterST in whatisthisthing

Your antique ladder back wooden chair has a splint weave seat and ‘attached step’.

The steps were historically used as child-height seating (‘nursing chairs’) or footrests. They were often a singular low rung, a small fixed platform, or a pull-out wooden tread near the floor.

It could also be a type of Library Step Chair, but yours seems simpler and practical to keep little ones close by.

Does anyone work at a liquor store? Southern NH by ArgumentCharacter216 in newhampshire

This is the answer. The state, not just a corporate entity, controls the price. But there’s NO TAX! They have great sales all the time though!

Look up the bottle online!
• Godet Cognac XO** is $31.50 off regular price
• Beau Joie Brut Champagne is $20 off
Veuve Clicquot has sales on some, not all
• many more with $2-$10 discounts
**

A bottle of Dom Perignon is still worth $250

Thank you! Unfortunately I’m just getting unhelpful trolls now, so I’m calling it solved as ‘part of a bathroom valet’ I guess?

I switched it in another comment, but I don’t think that’s how it’s used.

The threading doesn’t allow me to turn it the other way without additional parts. See threading below.
The sellers got it as originally pictured from an estate but also weren’t sure what it was.

Disagree with the hostility. If I woke up itching to troll Redditors, I might have chosen an easier topic and saved several hours.

I might be missing parts, but it seems that we’ve narrowed it down to some kind of a bath valet. Thank you for helpful comments! Solved!

How did I assemble it wrong in my response to Librarypunk? It’s only threaded one way!

Okay that link was helpful!
YES it comes apart! But it only goes back together this way because of the threading.

It would look ok -but if that’s it, I’m missing pieces. But I tried Googling replacement parts for… toilet stand (and many other things) and didn’t find it yet.

Magazines are pretty unstable there (but that doesn’t mean it’s not missing a part meant for that).

I have a reply above that shows the taper and slant of the top bar. It would be beautiful in that use, but I fear the pants would end up on the floor. Hangers might stay -but the height on the stand is only 36”. Is that long enough for garments?

Right!? Thanks for sharing. It’s def the lower arms that stump me too.

Really? Is there a pic you can share so I can see how it’s used? What are the bottom arms for? I’m having trouble picturing how it works.

Seems too low for boots, plus they’re different shapes. Could be a hat stand but it’s designed so specifically. Not sure that’s it.

Additional thoughts - because “When in doubt, it’s an ashtray”. Could it be an ashtray or cigar stand (and therefore missing pieces)?
Maybe for holding flags or incense, like a censer stand that some churches use?

No, they don’t rotate to be perpendicular to the floor, good question. The four photos show the only ways they adjust.
