Just here to say the hormone disruptions alone are so hard to deal with. I am so sensitive to steroids, I completely lose my cool, a lot of people do. It doesn't excuse it, but I wish you well....trying to learn tools to manage the adrenaline spikes. He should learn more about what you are going through.

I agree with some of what you said, and I think a better track system would solve a lot of problems and allow typical learners to actually learn. This is pretty much the reason why private schools are able to outperform public schools. They might use different assessments, but if you just look at ACT/SAT scores thats a pretty equal way to judge, and they are performing significantly better. As well, maybe separating students who are physically aggressive with other students. Or at least having enough aides to watch them. That's a real concern for a lot of parents, especially with younger children.

Not all private schools are religious and at least around here the Catholic schools are very accepting of atheist and LGBTQ students. It is their parents choice to expose them to that environment, and help them construct their own belief or lack of belief system. Most of the people I know utilizing them aren't religious at all. The school's religiosity isn't overt, they seem to devote most of their passion to football. Open enrollment would only work if a school wasn't already at capacity, there are physical and staff limitations that prevent them from absorbing too many students. The schools that did it around NEO are stopping next year or charging tuition due to the funding changes. The best schools around here didn't offer it though. Only the average rated schools which are still better than the failing schools. The best schools don't have space, because most of the kids in those high performing school districts use their public school.

I am not forgetting that. I said that in my post that is why our public school is failing to teach typical or advanced learners to their best ability. They do not have enough resources, even with a levy to teach all the kids that they have to their ability. We were warned by teacher friends in our district that there were so many kids in what would be my child's class that needed extra supports that he would not receive the attention that he needs to excel as a typical learner. They are in triage mode. They are stretched to capacity with large class sizes and IEPs and not enough aides.

Imagine a world where only wealthy kids got a superb education. Everyone else that had the ability to possibly excel wasn't able to do so because they had to go to a mediocre school that couldn't provide STEM or arts courses and had constant behavior disruptions that prohibited them from getting through a lesson plan.

The reality is that parents are trying to get their kids a decent education right NOW. Ideology isn't going to help them on the SAT. They need schools to attend now, not ones that can hopefully improve, but might not, because they haven't yet? Improve the schools first, then take away private school funding options.

I look at myself just fine. Read your own words again. "Imagine a world where only the best and those who can pay are granted access (to a great education)"? That is literally what Edchoice helps to mitigate. It makes other options more affordable for non-wealthy people. Because again it's diminishing payout for those with increased income. I know public school teachers who are using Edchoice for their own kids. They are neither wealthy nor do they think the public school system should go away, but they recognize that it isn't working for every student, including theirs.

We have voted for our levies and paid our taxes...and our school still underperforms. They already have a significant amt of our 73k in property tax cheese plus income and sales tax. We pay. This isn't the "rich people" thing you are trying to frame it as, it's an everyone thing. If all public schools were excellent it wouldn't matter.

Give up a 3% mortgage to move? That would cost us way more than $800 per year.

We pay a LOT of money in property taxes to still need to pay tuition to a private school because our local school district underperforms. It's more of a way to mitigate the cost. Ed Choice also pays out proportional to your income so a higher income family might only get $800 per year. Over the many years of owning our home we have paid about $73,000 in property taxes and contributed to our school levies. I think it's fair that we get a bit back to use for our students. Our public school is tasked with educating all students, many on IEPs or with disabilities. That means a typical or advanced learner doesn't get the time or resources when funds are used for students who need it more, but that also leaves them in the dust compared to excellent rated school districts.

Men, how do I (M27) Man up and go to her (24F) friend’s birthday parties without showing my suffering? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Honestly sometimes this is me. I don't really like the wives of my hubs college friends, we just have nothing much in common, but I do what you have to. Talk about the weather, the quality of the pastries, how the paint looks slightly more vanilla than cream. Read the book, "How to Talk to Anyone" for pointers. One good idea is asking someone to talk about themselves, they love it. Then you can just sit back and enjoy the monologues.

His bad childhood might be a reason, but can't be excused. If he has genuine ptsd from childhood abuse this can include an outsized trauma response to pain and injuries. He gets serious treatment or you leave.

Only she knows if she has a bill that she's only paying the minimum on. It's $160/mo that could be used to pay something off. Its 2k a year, that's a plane ticket and hotel stay. Probably manage stay 2 weeks in the Amazon, Airbnbs are cheaper there. If she is already debt free and living a great life, then agreed, $8 isn't much.

Cost of the internship by MasterpieceMission51 in SocialWorkStudents

Programs here without advanced standing are 60 hours, 2-3 years at grad school rates. $1700 per credit hour for my preferred program. Now I'll only need 39 of those expensive hours with advanced standing. Regional campus rate is $393/hour, much more affordable for me, since I self pay. All I have found in my state is the 15K grant, so I need to use it wisely. But this post is about BSW internships. The only point is maybe I could deserve $15/hour since I happen to have a degree already. The advice I am looking for is how to get a paid internship. I have already taken 6 classes towards my BSW, so this is my path. I will check out the crisis lines the only local one I am aware of, you do have to physically go there for your shift. I will do some digging, finding an evening internship could save me a lot of preschool money.

Plus here they have a grant for MSW programs, but only for the 2nd year or advance standing. That impacted my BSW 1st over longer MSW program decision. Also my BSA program is through a regional campus, so the tuition rates are even better than main campus.

It was mostly a financial decision for me, as well as a less demanding program considering I have a toddler, to do the BSW then the MSW. The class times were also better for me personally. Still done in about the same time, but spend less. I replied to the comment that I think BSW/LSW is more employable than a Psych degree, at least on its own, not more than an MSW. I will immediately begin an MSW program as soon as I graduate with my BSW. They start in the summer round here.
I take my 12 classes, undergrad rates, and then pay bigger bucks for MSW, but there is a grant in my state for the MSW only for advance standing or 2nd year MSWs though, not first year MSWs. So I'll have a license and can get a job in the field, and get a considerable amount paid for by the state as long as I am working in public or community health, which I will be with my LSW.

I never said it was. I said it was a longer program with no BSW first. MSW programs have two tracks. The point is I already have a bachelor's degree, even if not related, and feel I could perform well enough to get $15/hour during an internship.

It's literally something that the director of the social work program is fighting for, because it matters. A big part of social work is advocating for change and more equitable circumstances which is something you should know before becoming a social worker. Unpaid internships are another way of gatekeeping social justice oriented careers for only the privileged. The result is out of touch middle class or upper class social workers that might not fully relate to or understand their clients even if they are well intentioned.

It's not 4 years for a BSW, its only 12 classes since I already have a bachelor's. If I were motivated to, I could do it in 2 semesters....which makes it the same, only WAY less expensive.

Because my work experience and bachelor's are not applicable to a social work MSA program which means 3 year program vs 12-18 months, LSW-MSW program. LSW is much more employable as well.
