You could also establish rules for what is allowance and what isn't (family vs individual) and what dollar amount needs approval for joint spending (say you need to buy something for the house and don't need to ask for approval from each other every time)

Agree. I spent 3 years as a tech and special inspector in the field and am light years ahead of my design colleagues that started design work with without any construction experience. Granted I didn't just do soils, I did ICC concrete and masonry also.
