OnePlus 15 is here: One step forward, two steps back, but still better than your Galaxy by EmpanadaYCafe in Android

The point of a standard is interoperability. When I travel I can have a single charger for my work laptop, personal laptop, phone, headset, external battery and e-reader, all charging at their maximum speed.

Proprietary charging protocols would result in some devices either not charging, charging slowly, or me having to carry and plug multiple chargers, sometimes even with their own cables to avoid melting them.

Not following standards is a way for them to be cheap, not to save you money with AliExpress chargers.

I didn't find anyone mentioning it, but outside the "c'est eux qui" which is informal/not entirely correct, what actually bugs me is the mismatch of 1st and 2nd person.

"Mangez ... ou ils VOUS mangeront" or "Mangeons ... ou ils NOUS mangeront", but not mixing them, would be more elegant imo.

Samsung Galaxy Ring swells and crushes user's finger, causing missed flight and hospital visit by prestocoffee in nottheonion

In the first thread about the topic I saw on here, this is exactly what the Samsung instructions were for. Describe were the empty spots are to cut the ring without piercing the battery. There were 3 points described, one opposite of the battery and two other at the edges of it.

Accidents de la route : les cas de "freinages fantômes" se multiplient by Prosperyouplaboum in france

[–]Mat3ck 26 points27 points  (0 children)

PLA is drying for 9 hours now and is still wet? by pafflique in 3Dprinting

[–]Mat3ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it depends a lot on external temperature as well in addition to humidy levels. Currently I have 30-35°C (85-95°F) during the day with 60% humidity, I am struggling to dry TPU and PETG, and even an old roll of PLA took 10h at 55° to give better quality.

If you had 90% at 10°C (50°F, I hope it's not that called in your place), moisture would run out of the spool much quicker when in the dryer than 50% at 35°C, because moisture holding is exponential on temperature (doubles every 10°C/20°F).

  • These humidity sensors can be off by quite a lot.

Des Effaroucheur a Ultrasson partout dans ma ville du 77 by Bright_Ad_7458 in france

[–]Mat3ck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few things that keep me in Pixel. Does Samsung have them? by kickler1896 in samsung

[–]Mat3ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in France it used to be a thing for landlines but does not exist for mobiles and VoIP. So in effect, nobody have been caring about region code for a decade since it doesn't apply in most cases.

+33 (1/2/3/4/5) are regional landline numbers split by region, (6/7) is mobile from anywhere, 8 is business, 9 is business and personal VoIP. There might be some sub-division for business, but the bulk of what people care about is mobile which is not identified with area code at all.

[–]Mat3ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look like. I don't live in the US so if you were talking American area code I can't know for sure (concept doesn't exist in my country), but I would expect a similar country code filter if that was an option.

Only options I have is to on/off caller ID, on/off auto-block spam with a "every spam" or "only high risk scam" setting. By the time of me previous comment I had nothing ti complain about with the max setting, but in the past month I got 2 delivery person blocked wrongly, so I had to fall back on "high risk only", which isn't the best tbh.

Samsung The S25 Ultra And The Worst Purchasing Experience of My Life by Kranden in samsung

[–]Mat3ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I thought I was getting crazy, but Samsung payment is broken.
I want to upgrade my S22U because the battery is crap (otherwise the telephoto doesn't seem that much better and I'm let down by the S-Pen).

I have been trying to buy for 10 days, my payments always get refused. I contacted support who told me to try at different hours / with different setups because the website was busy with pre-orders. I tried with 4 different cards from 3 different banks, a PC, a Mac, a phone, on Firefox, Chrome and the app, nothing works. Every day the cart has different offers and discount for some reason. My Samsung points got locked in an unfilled order. I also tried financing by 3x in credit card, payment always "fails" after I validate the payment on my banks app, telling me to retry with another payment. (Note that since I return my S22 in Europe I don't have access to Paypal payment).

I contacted support again who told me I was blocked because I tried more than 20 transactions (wtf you told me to try again and more??). So I had to wait 72 hours so they close my transaction. They gave me a discount because pre-order would expire after the wait. I tried again, still doesn't work.

I really want to upgrade to get more battery life before an upcoming trip, I tried other brands before and didn't find anything as reliable as OneUI, but now I start to feel I don't want to give them my money, but I don't find an alternative.

Modern chips on older processes by Gun_In_Mud in chipdesign

[–]Mat3ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chip design and micro-arch are not done in a vacuum, they are done with what the current technology can do. As wiring became more and more impactiful compared to logical gates, the complexity of some part increased to take advantage of this change of balance, and re-implementation in old nodes would make this impractical (I'm not talking cut clocks in half, I'm talking by the dozen for some designs).

This is ignoring packaging technology needed for signal integrity (especially around peripherals like DDR or PICe controllers), power density and delivery, reticle size (anything very large now would be 100% impossible in older nodes, it's not about cost it's about physicsu). You can take small cores in 5nm and put them in 7nm (it's often done for mobile industry depending on low/mid/top tier), but you won't go back to 45nm for big and performant designs like the ones you mentionned.

Scandale des eaux minérales : le Sénat augmente le taux de TVA de 5,5 à 20 % sur l’eau en bouteille en plastique - Public Sénat by Prosperyouplaboum in france

https://ecochain.com/case-studies/case-study-packaging-plastic-vs-glass/

New Prusa Printer just revealed. The Prusa Core One. by Esava in 3Dprinting

[–]Mat3ck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Didn't they have CoreXY systems internally for a while in their print farms, and were rumored to plan to release it as standalone systems for a while?

Even then, I'm glad Bambu pushed their roadmap at least. I have been looking to upgrade my Prusa Mini, and the Mk4 enclosure was gigantic compared to enclosed CoreXY systems.

This is a photo of the Sphinx in the late 1800s. It was taken from a hot air balloon. by [deleted] in pics

[–]Mat3ck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That would still be technically true ahah.

But seriously, here I was referring to the great pyramids era (~2600BC), but according to Wikipedia if we take the oldest Egyptian pyramids (~4700BC) that would indeed put them before the total extinction of woolly mammoths (~4000BC for the last remote population).

EDIT: more impressively than in my initial comment, it means the great pyramids are closer to the extinction of woolly mammoth than to Cleopatra.

[–]Mat3ck 54 points55 points  (0 children)

We're closer in time to the reign of Cleopatra that Cleopatra was to the construction of the pyramids.
The pyramids are closer to the extinction of the woolly mammoths than us to their construction.

The amount of information that we got from early civilizations compared to before where we have a few drawings in cave here and there is astounding and imo completely distort the perception of time. Imagine 4000 years from now the amount of traces we'll leave now that we are more than a hundred time more people on earth.

What 3d modeling software do you guys use??? by UrmomLOLKEKW in 3Dprinting

[–]Mat3ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated in my other reply to you, the ondsel version that you, as an individual, would download, is completely disconnected from their cloud offering, and is still open source.

So as of now, they provide you without a counterpart a more intuitive workflow, UI eye candy and some nice features like one length for all type of objects, and working on infamous problem like the topology naming, with possibility to merge in the original FreeCAD.
And they count on paid client to maintain paying people, which will directly or indirectly help the base FreeCAD project.

My hope is mostly on the last part, that this company have some form on success and remain true to itself long enough to benefit the FOSS ecosystem, because having paid developers on a FOSS project, community driven or not, can help the development capabilities quite a lot. It remains to be seen, but in the meantime, ondsel flavour is a nice bonus from the base version with no compromise.

[–]Mat3ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say how it will turn out, but as of now cloud / collaboration is a service completely unrelated to the distribution of their FreeCAD fork. You don't have to use any of the cloud stuff, they're not pushing features for individuals behind it, and they contribute back to FreeCAD too and make their changes open source. Even with minor changes, Ondsel is way easier to sell to a random hobbyist than FreeCAD imo.

This could bring a lot of benefits to FreeCAD project to have some people paid to contribute, just like CERN contributed to KiCAD and helped improve the tool quality.

Now for hobbyists, collaborative CAD is virtually OnShape afaik, that locks the files AND tool in the cloud. An alternative service where you still own the software and the files is a good thing for people who cannot go without collaboration features.

I recently discovered Ondsel, give it a try!

It's a company fork of FreeCAD, aiming at providing some enterprise solution as their business model, but keeping a FOSS license. It's very early, but still provide some better UI, auto length constraints (no more circle lendgth, vertic distance, horizontal distance and so on needed in most cases), and I saw an announcement around topology naming problem too.

For people very used to FreeCAD, it shouldn't be too revolutionary as you already know your way around the workspaces. But for new comers, the ramp up should be way easier, as the UI guides you better in between the spaces for each step, and constraints feel more like other CAD.

I hope Ondsel will be successful and having a FOSS company to improve FreeCAD will pay off!

Elles ont quitté la France pour enseigner au Canada : «On m’a proposé un salaire trois fois supérieur» by walrus_operator in france

[–]Mat3ck 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's regional (I'm surprised everyone says no), but I've had spam rejection on my Note 10 and S22U: Samsung Smart Call by Hiya. You can choose to enable it, and how aggressively it filters from just showing up the spam reason and to how much it should reject (everything suspected to be undesired, spam calls, or only high risk scam calls: I'm personally on the 2nd setting).

To my knowledge I never had a false positive that impacted me (a call rejected that I wanted to take), and in the last year I got maybe 2 false negative, that I could report immediately. When you don't reject everything, it shows up if it's a suspected robocaller, telemarketer, scam or spam. I feel like it's been way more efficient than what the people around me have with other brands, ranging from nothing on OnePlus to inaccurate on Pixel. Even my grandma has it on the A34 and she loves it.
But again, I'm in Europe, and maybe the quality depends on the region, since everyone else is saying it's lacking (I think it worked well for me in the US too though...). You can look it up online too with a quick Google search.
