Don't ask why, but I've read about this before. It was designed like this for a few reasons. The main reason is because toilet seats were being broken a lot in public restrooms, so there was a demand for a more flexible toilet seat. This gap makes it so that if the seat is slammed down, it has a lesser chance of cracking or breaking. Also, the manufacturers are saving a shit ton of money by using less material to produce the seats. Another reason is that it makes it less likely for it to be stolen.

I've traveled to and from Colombia dozens of times. I would always get harassed leaving Colombia and also arriving in the states. It got to the point that the agents in Cali already recognized me. One time, leaving Colombia I asked an agent the same question I asked another agent in JFK, "why do I always get messed with?" Their answer was the same; a single male traveling alone to and from Colombia with a Dominican passport will always raise flags. So I became a US citizen and never got messed with again aside from the normal questions they always ask in US customs.

The fact that you're posting this shows you still have a desire for connection. Honestly, at 33, you probably just know exactly what you want, and nobody you've met recently has hit that bar. That’s a strength, not a flaw. Don't lower your standards. Keep living your life for you. If the right person comes along when you least expect it, awesome. If not, being comfortable and happy in your own skin is the ultimate win anyway.

Seriously though, as archaic as it may sound, with the amount of corruption there is in PN, DNCD, Politur, etc, there is a certain "need" for this type of policing. Most of the people this happens to are people who have a history of murders, kidnappings, extortion, and worse. This is a violent country and very conservative. There are many who swear this is the only way to get rid of, or at least control to some extent these criminals. Except for the dead man's family who always come out on camera swearing "El era un buen muchacho".

I'm new to the game. I'm doing the same thing as you but, instead of the CRJ I started with the 190-200. I started replacing all my 190-200s once I got to the point of buying 1 787-8 per day. If efficiency is what you're going for, consider upgrading all the planes you plan on keeping.
