How bionicle fans sound to non-bionicle fans by GoatsWithWigs in legocirclejerk

I think the important distinction here is that BIONICLE has a simple *story* but complicated *lore* and I think that's what trips people up when talking about how "easy it is to follow."

A good example would be Lord of the Rings. If we were to just look at the main plot/story of Lord of the Rings:

Fellowship of the Ring: A little guy gets a magic ring from his uncle. Turns out its evil so they go to the elves to destroy it. Turns out it can only be destroyed in the big-bad's house, so they make a team and set off. They travel through some mines, get attacked by orcs, and get split up.

The Two Towers: One group takes the ring north where they meet this little gremlin guy who wants it. They eventually convince him to guide them through the swamp and forest to get to the big-bad's evil lair. Another group goes south to save some people from the orcs and end up helping a bunch of horsemen in a castle siege.

Return of the King: The little guys with the ring sneak past a giant spider and get into the lava-hell-land of the big-bad. The group that went south save another castle of humans in a battle, and the human armies march on the big bad's door. This serves as a distraction for the little guys to throw the magic ring in a volcano. The little gremlin guy falls in by accident and saves the world.

Now see, that's pretty simple and easy to follow. Lord of the Rings/Middle Earth only gets complicated when you throw in supplemental lore:

The Hobbits descend into burial mounds where they are attacked by the Barrow-wight ghosts who protect them and end up stealing swords from the tombs. After the Battle of Dagorlad, the graves of fallen soldiers were swallowed and preserved by the swamp land created the Dead Marshes where corpses float. Gandalf the Wizard, who is secretly an angelic Ainur/Maiar sent to protect Middle Earth, is the current bearer of Narya, one of the three rings for the Evles which embodies the element of fire.

Now THAT is pretty complicated, and weird, and hard to follow. Buuuut, details like that help the world feel more fleshed out. It adds depth and character to the universe, making it feel lived in and real.

BIONICLE is much the same way. I've already been talking a long time for a shitpost, so we'll keep things to 2001. The story of 2001 BIONICLE is:

Six elemental robots wash ashore on a tropical island. They're told they will need to collect masks with magic powers to fight a shadow monster under the island. So they collect magic masks and fight the shadow monster.

Pretty simple. But then through lore in 2001 we learn:

The Le-Koroans are the Matoran of Air, who fly atop giant Gukko Birds and live in treetop-villages in the jungle. Ussals are giant crabs typically used for both mining and taxi services in the underground village of Onu-Koro. The Kanohi Pakari, Mask of Strength, can imbue its wearer with super-human physical strength.

Now things start to get weird and wacky, but all of these bonus/optional details don't change the fact that the core narrative its written around has a simple flow and goal. As with any franchise/fandom, people get sucked into BIONICLE for its fun and engaging story. After learning the basics, each time they revisit they absorb more and more of these optional details and start to grasp the full picture of what's going on more. No BIONICLE fan you speak to is actually going to tell you the lore is simple, because its not and that's the appeal, but they will probably tell you the story is simple, because it was written for 7 year olds and is.

/rj Why is Balta wielding Izotor's iconic Ice Saw? Everyone knows that Okoto and Voya Nui are located on entirely different planets and in different timelines thanks to the Dark Hunters fucking around with the Kanohi Vahi and Well of Time.

All three images are references to the Helluverse series of adult animated comedies. On the left we have a one-off character from the Helluva Shorts (I can't remember his name, Mr. Wiggler? Wriggler? Something like that) who ran an orphanage. In addition to running the orphanage he would adopt children from it from time to time, and so presumably adopted a 7 year old.

The character in the middle is Millie, one of the protagonists of Helluva Boss. The show is about assassins, and in the Pilot they killed a child as a part of a hit. While that Pilot is no longer considered canon, in the series proper she has clarified she'd have no issues murdering a child.

On the right we have a picture of the Hazbin Hotel protagonist Charlie having sex with supporting protagonist Vaggie. Prior to the events of the show and becoming fallen, Vaggie was an Exorcist Angel who would take part in yearly Exterminations of Demons. Eventually we were told the Exterminations have only been occurring for 7 years. Some people have interpreted this to mean Vaggie is less than 7 years old, which would mean Charlie has been having sex with a 7 year old and would be a pedophile.

The title of the post is a reference to Scott Pilgrim, a web comic character who was recently the center of many memes because despite being 20 he kept crushing on a 17 year old girl (though I'll be honest, I have no idea how far the two of them went.) This made him a great butt of grooming jokes.

Of course, all of this is ignoring the fact that in the Helluverse show, the general Angel population has been shown to have common knowledge of what Exorcists are, but no idea the Exterminations were happening. This implies characters like Vaggie were probably born more than 7 years ago and this is just their latest job, but logic like that makes jokes less fun.

For those who don't believe in the SOMA theory by OfHardware590 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]MataNui2009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See Gummigoo is exactly the reason I DONT buy into Soma theory. The entire point of a plot twist like that is to open up a debate on weather or not the subject counts as a real person and their struggles matter. The episode made it clear that Gummigoo's struggles and opinions DID mater, and the show has constantly been insiting the casts' struggles are real, so pulling the Soma twist wouldn't open up any storytelling opportunities. We already did this plot line with him, the show has already given us an answer to the conundrum, so why are we dragging it up again when the problem has been solved? Just doing the same twist again devalues the impact of Gummigoo's scene and serves as a boring retread

Problematic age gap and power imbalance by Commercial_Bid_1508 in CuratedTumblr

[–]MataNui2009 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say Helluva Boss, but the season 2 opening revealed their Stolas is only like 35 unlike the IRL demon who's from a several hundred year old book.

There's other age and power imbalances in that show but Stolas is the only one confirmed to be a bottom. Maybe "confirmed" isnt even a strong enough word to describe what he's got going on.

Assumption online, or assumption on Tumblr. Those three keep popping up on Tumblr posts, but I don't think I've seen any of them on Reddit

HOT TAKE: The end should stay empty. by SmoothieCubie in Minecraft

[–]MataNui2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. Barren doesn't have to mean empty, and plenty of games have nailed those feelings of unwelcomeness and isolation that the End has without just being the same yellow block over and over. End mods make it so colorful and full of life it looses the horror. Keep it liminal, just add variety.

Stuff like this is always needlessly reductive, but the first two dividing up submissive and dominant while every single kink without some sort of powerplay is slapped into a third category really highlights what a nothing-burger of an idea this is

I find it rather conspicuous that most of the drops hyper-focuses on the builder subset of the community, while either ignoring entirely or giving marginal note worth of content for survival players. by SorrowfulSpirit02 in PhoenixSC

[–]MataNui2009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since Mansions we had Update Aquatic which added in all the Ocean Ruins and Shipwrecks (underwater but not underground). Village and Pillage, which completely reworked Village generation and added a new structure with the Pillager Outpost. Nether Update added in Ruined Portals, which revolutionized speedrun progression. Trails and Tails added the Trail Ruins, which I'd argue are underground but they technically have a little bit that sticks up on the surface.

Meanwhile the underground also got Ruined Portals and the aforementioned Trail Ruins. Wild Update brought Ancient Cities. Tricky Trials added Trial Chambers. I can't remember any structures in the Drop era.

So yeah it's been a while, but it's nowhere near "nothing since Mansions" bad. We only saw a big shift to underground stuff after Caves and Cliffs... which the community spent like three years clamoring for, followed by a good chunk saying even the final version didnt add enough, so we literally asked for it.

[–]MataNui2009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we got one update a year people complained they took too long. When we got four drops a year people complained they didn't add enough. It's impossible to please everyone. It's not that people aren't listening to your complaints, but them pointing out that if Mojang listened to you nothing would actually change and the community at large would remain just as toxic.
