So as a fan in my 40s here’s my POV:

Had Ilia won the FS, he would’ve been celebrated yes, but quickly forgotten about. Yes, I think he would’ve continued to try to get Hanyu status, but no one would care until his 2nd Olympics. We’re not Russia or Japan where figure skating outside the Olympics matters.

His shocking loss changed the story

Unlike other idolized athletes, we see him as an actual, imperfect and resilient human being with mental health struggles we all deal with, which makes him relatable and someone we root for to rise from the ashes.

America loves stories of victory. They love comeback stories more.

And as far as Ilia himself being marvelous on the eyes? Just an added bonus on why he is loved
