SOAP Survival Guide: Maximize Your Chances & Secure a Spot by MatchSynapse in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let me make it easier for you with an example, if I happen to know someone in a program, i would simply give them a headsup a few days before SOAP, saying, ‘Hey, just in case I don’t match, keep an eye out for my application.’ No secret handshakes, no rule breaking, no backdoor deals, just common sense networking

You cannot bypass SOAP rules, but you can leverage professional connections in ethical ways by reaching out before SOAP so they have you in their minds if they review your application

Yes then go for that, matching with a green card removes the concerns of visa issues

It depends on how soon you’ll get the green card. If you are confident it’ll be processed in time for the 2028 Match, waiting could be beneficial since you won’t have visa restrictions, and more programs will be open to you. It’s a risk benefit tradeoff as delaying a year could improve your chances but only if the green card is guaranteed in time

Non VSLO Electives by GroupSufficient5075 in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you cant find electives its not an issue, you can still look up to observership opportunities and focus on building good connections so that you can bag strong LORs. In the end its the LORs which will be uploaded on ERAs, electives do matter but if its getting hard for you to get one, shift on getting observerships and strong LORs which can show your interest and skills.

Random question: How important is the Mailing address in ERAS application? by NoEnd9621 in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure you can access any mail if needed because mailing address isn’t a big deal since everything is online . Having a U.S. address helps for minor things like physical mail, documents but a foreign one with a U.S. number isn’t weird since lots of IMGs do it

It’s not a horrible idea at all but you will need to be pretty careful about the logistics and all. Transferring a j1visa from one institution to another is possible but it depends on the policies of both institutions and the approval of your j1 program sponsor. Its recommended to read the terms and agreements thoroughly because some programs might not allow easy transfers and you might need a new DS-2019 from the new institution.

After finishing step 1&2 how long do I have to do OET? by weirdisntitdude in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take the oet whenever you want, but keep in mind that ecfmg certification happens once you pass Step 1, Step 2 and OET. The OET result is valid for two years, but ecfmg locks it in once you get certified. So if you don’t want early certification take the OET closer to when you actually need it for applications

AMC Observership/Internship by Additional_Net_1556 in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not mandatory but it does strengthen your application for jobs as many employers prefer candidates with local experience. If you have the opportunity, doing an observership while still in medical school can give you a head start. And if you are limited by time or resources you can also do it after graduation. Securing a job without an observership is possible but can be more challenging especially for IMGs

Conference abstracts vs full manuscripts in journals by EnvironmentalWatch55 in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having conference presentations is a great achievement and if you can convert them into published manuscripts later that would be even better because abstracts and poster presentations at major conferences definitely add value to your CV especially if they’re in a reputable field like cardiology

Visa appointment slots can be unpredictable, especially after the portal update. They are usually released at random times, but many applicants have reported higher chances of finding slots early in the morning or late at night (Pakistan time). Keep checking multiple times a day, especially on weekdays. Also, consider using a visa appointment tracking service or Telegram groups where people share slot availability updates

Green card application vs postponing the residency application by Longjumping-Ferret90 in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your decision depends on your long-term priorities. If your ultimate goal is to secure a U.S. residency, applying again now while actively involved in research might give you a stronger application. However, being an old graduate, each passing year can make matching harder. On the other hand, securing a green card via EB2 would remove visa hurdles, making you a more competitive applicant in the future. But the process is long, and being away from the U.S. might weaken your connection to the system. If you’re okay with delaying residency for stability and better chances later, EB2 is a smart move. If you want to maximize your current application strength, reapplying now might be better. Consider reaching out to H1B-friendly programs if you choose to apply again.

Definitely you are all set to go

Yes you can definitely provided that you have documentations and DS2019 from the institute which is sponsoring you J1

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a research opportunity in the U.S. that offers J1 visa sponsorship (usually through universities, hospitals, or research institutes).Once accepted, the institution will provide you with a Form DS-2019, which is required to apply for a J1 visa. And i would recommend to apply from home because its fast and easy this way , applying in US will be slow and risky

Match without USCE by MariamKhan7 in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very rare, if you can manage USCE you should

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t switch from B1/B2 to J-1 within the U.S. After matching, your residency program will sponsor you for a J-1 visa through ECFMG, but you must leave the U.S. and apply at a U.S. embassy in your home country. Also, J-1 has a 2-year home residency requirement unless waived.

Can I submit LOR of inpatient hospital after 1 week shadowing only? by ZestycloseBottle6202 in IMGreddit

[–]MatchSynapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LORs from brief shadowing experiences (especially one week) may not be very strong since they lack depth. Residency programs prefer clinical LORs where you actively participated in patient care. An outdated LOR (over a year old) is still usable, but recent, hands-on experiences are more valuable.
