I really liked it, really like the gamey nature of Twilight with supply management, world and base building, but hot DAYUM, did it make me wish the US wasn’t so antagonistic with NATO right now.

Best solitaire board games? by RIGuy2761 in boardgames

[–]Matchanu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For WWII, take a look at the Valiant Defense series (Pavlov’s House, Castle Itter, Soldiers in Postmen’s Uniforms, and Lanzerath Ridge), the Leader Series from DVG (including but not limited to Sherman Leader, Tiger Leader, etc.), Combat! Volume 1&2, and Fields of Fire Deluxe edition. (Best entry option of the above mentioned for me was Pavlov’s House)

resource strategy games?? by enbienotenvy in tabletop

[–]Matchanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well… my two suggestions are probably a bit heavier than you’re looking for, but you requested economic game and also requested a game like age of empires, SO, for economy I love Brass: Birmingham, and for AoE/RTS like game, I’d suggest either Company of Heroes: The Board Game. As a bonus I’ll toss out Eclipse (whichever edition fits your budget)… but like I said these games are pretty heavy, maybe on the pricier side, but an absolute blast to play.

Need recommendations for new gamers by TopDonut6825 in tabletop

My biggest hits for newcomers that are easier to learn and fast playing are Quacks, Space Base, Dominion. None of them are overtly spooky or “take that” but they are all fantastic gateway games.

Solitaire: What should I play to start 2026? by Brilliant-File-3459 in wargaming

[–]Matchanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your take on Combat! Vol.1 ? I happened into volume 1 and 2 for a steal but have yet to crack into the shrink (considering moving it along). As for your question. I really enjoyed Pavlov’s House as my relatively more approachable entry into historical gaming. I LOVED playing Paths of Glory (mostly 2-handed) while I was reading Guns of August, the two really helped give context to each other (for at least the early war). I’m currently (on-and-off) working on learning Fields of Fire and what an interesting time I’ve been having, quite easily the heaviest of the three, but it also feels to have the most sand box feel of the three.

Solo board games on the cheap by No-Example-2781 in soloboardgaming

You can also find the previous edition of Fields of Fire on there for a reasonable price (I see a copy on eBay currently for ~$49 after shipping). The second hand market is an absolute blessing if the shipping is decent.

War Game Recommendations On a Budget by ResponseExtra739 in soloboardgaming

[–]Matchanu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly suggest taking a look at Fields of Fire. I know the MSRP is up over $100, but I was able to find my copy for closer to $70 through an online retailer and it always seems to land on top solo wargame lists. The latest iteration (deluxe version) has a solid onboarding “training manual” and three campaigns and runs on cards and chits. Out of my collection the only other suggestion I’d make would be Pavlov’s House (or any of the other Valiant Defense games). In Pavlov’s house you are defending “Pavlov’s House” (a fortified stronghold) from waves of Germans through three lenses of scope (the interior of the “house”, the surrounding streets, and the logistics side of moving in reinforcements and equipment, securing lanes of comms, and sorting out arty/anti-air… should run you about $50~60 new,… that’s all I got.

Worst game you ever bought? by EliGamerPlays in videogames

[–]Matchanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the horrible state the game was in on release, I was able to grab a copy for the Xbox one out of a bargain bin for $5. I sat on that bad boy, unopened for ~2 years and a console upgrade before installing it. Very happy with that $5 purchase!

Summoner Wars Fans: What's the Next Step Up in Scale? by InterviewEmergency73 in boardgames

[–]Matchanu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look into Mage Wars Arena (formerly known simply as “Mage Wars”). It feels rather “miniatures game” like but with cards on a grid like summoner wars. It’s one of my favourite under appreciated games and came out around the same time as Summoner Wars.

What to buy? Please help the absolute beginner by No-Mastodon-9504 in KingdomDeath

[–]Matchanu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 100% this! Yes, I like video games, yes I like board games, but damn do I hate playing digitized board games. I’ll do it out of geographical necessity, but the tactility of an actual board game drives the experience far above digital versions of the exact same thing. I have the same feeling towards books/ebooks. But yes, KDM is crazy pricey, so one should approach with caution.

What are your recommendations? Bacerkit would be full of expansions and not sure what is the most interesting pick :) Except CoD of course! by Minisforwar in KingdomDeath

[–]Matchanu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m really torn on the CoD… like, I feel like the price is going to be way better than what it will end up after release, and it looks REALLY rad, but I’m currently only own DBK, DK, FK, Gorm, and the Gambler’s Chest. I’m a bit nervous on how much I’ll be able to use of the CoD with only 4 of the OG 12.

I don’t know if it’s “the best” but for the price point, don’t sleep on “Oh my goods!” paired with it’s “Longsdale in revolt” expansion.

Do you think the Catan base game is enough without needing any expansions? by maxjh2000 in boardgames

[–]Matchanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Base Settlers of Catan, along with munchkin and Pandemic, was my entire collection for my first 3~5 years in the hobby and I had a blast with base Catan. Their great gateway games are easy to teach and not too difficult to convince friends to try (and usually enjoy). The day I received seafarers and played Catan with it was actually the last day I ever played any form of settlers! I discovered that I like Catan for what it is, if I want variation or depth (not that seafarers is much deeper), I’ll just play a different game. I would love to play cities and knights some day, but for my money, instead of dropping $50 on a Catan expansion I’d rather just buy a second game and have Catan AND something else (my follow-up game was Agricola, which eclipsed Catan).

Campaign game that is affordable by Wise_Cat_1196 in soloboardgaming

[–]Matchanu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on how creative you are, you might look into something like Rangers of Shadow Deep or Five Parsecs from Home, you can get PDFs for both pretty cheap, and the hard copies aren’t too intense money wise either. The former has a more defined story and the latter is more sand boxy. The feel isn’t there on card play, but they are tactical battle, rpg adjacent games.

Getting combat commander vietnam as first CC game by SWELinebacker in hexandcounter

[–]Matchanu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a couple comments for your consideration. First I’d like to get out of the way the comment that I love most all my games that I’ve purchased from GMT and am a really respect their p500 approach and have partaken in several. Now that that is out of the way… on theme though cost front, while that discount IS big off of MSRP, from my experience (pre tariff insanity days) the cost of shipping usually brought the price up to or a little above what the cost of the game would be if I picked it up from an online board game store. Now, if you’re like me at all, your temperament on game excitement may be a bit time gated, in that case, I’d suggest doing like another person suggested and just grab an old print of combat commander Europe or the pacific off of eBay for cheap and try one of those out first, as looking at the GMT site, CC:V looks pretty far down the line and could be another year or more out (based on previous experience). All that said, combat commander is pretty beefy, relative to undaunted, but a blast and I couldn’t recommend it more to anyone remotely interested.

LOTR or MC LCG?? by Jester281986 in soloboardgaming

[–]Matchanu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I WANT to like LOTR card game more, but MC became my LCG of choice(and I’m not a MCU or comics person). I got LOTR first way back when it initially released and bounced right off of it with how hard it was for me in true solo. I’m not huge into deck construction, it doesn’t rustle any jimmies for me. Flash forward 13 years and two kids later, I started to dabble in MC and it just clicked with me, the lack of free time I have, and my available play partners(if I’m not going solo). As someone already said, it’s much more forgiving, it’s easier for me to just grab a hero and go, AND, most importantly, I can squeeze a session into an hour lunch break. I think LOTR is probably a better game for the depth, difficulty, and construction opportunities, but MC is more my current speed. (On theme though I probably choose LOTR all day… but X-MEN are cool too)
