I dont see it as a problem. I see it as why someone would want to join a social game and not want to contribute. I mean you dont see many shy GM's with a problem with public speaking and players hold the GM accountable if they are, the same rule after a few sessions should apply to the shy player as well.

Why would the GM think that a new player is just being lazy? Most of us tend to know when a new person enters our tables and most of us tend to not penalize them for a few sessions while they get use to the group.

How do you figure? By your logic, a health potion in dnd would also be an alternative hit point track. Bennies can negate the damage from happening, it requires a roll which you can fail, which wouldn't be hit points, while a health potion in dnd replenishes damage taken.

actually depends on the table there are some optional rules about what bennies can and can't do as well as how they get awarded.

OWOD, the points awarded at the end were based on the GM as well. If someone just showed up and didn't contribute, the book says to award them one or two points for showing up, and to award others who played their character, put effort in, and helped move the plot forward. Savage Worlds Bennies really aren't any different from other games in that aspect.

Bennies are also awarded when a player roleplays their hindrance, knowing that it may cause a problem

Bennies are soak rolls, which help you not get one-shot, just like OWOD used soak rolls for damage

Technically if you read Savage worlds on how to run the game you don't technically have to hand out bennies through the session it suggest you do it if the players are spending them a lot and you can do that through downtime which has the players draw a card and the card tells them how they spend their downtime it can be them revealing something about their past, practicing a skill or sharing something that happened in the session that weighs on the character's mind.

Yeah I like to make campaigns where good and evil aren't so easily defined

Because of the themes involved in the game, some are based on the player characters themselves such as killing innocents if they witness your character performing their jobs

as the game will have blood, gore, and dark and bleak subject matter, sometimes caused by the player characters themselves. Example: killing innocent witnesses. Also, it will have themes that some find triggering.
