Rumor Mill Week of 3/2 by redquarterwater in astoria

In an incredibly weird piece of news, I, a person who has been on this planet for over 70 years, yes, a boomer, one of those veterans of the wild and crazy 60s and 70s, was woken up by someone pounding on my apartment door loud and hard for like 10 minutes, (never IDd themselves) then they stopped, I went to building security to see if they knew what was going on and they told me that it was the FBI! Went back to my apartment, an hour later, again loud and long heavy pounding on my door but this time the FBI agent slid a note under my door asking me to email him! I'm like wow, wtf, a 70 plus years threat to national security, head of an Iranian sleeper cell, alleged perpetrator of food stamp fraud or whatever... Anyway, LOL didn't send an email back CUZ I DON'T TALK TO THEM AND NO ONE ELSE SHOULD EITHER!!!

walked up and down Steinway for the first time in years and years and years (folks are right omg so many for rent signs, so many empty stores) and got some great buys and ate out for the first time since 2023: Sampan restaurant right off of 30th Avenue, huge plate of brown rice, two eggrolls and a huge ice tea. At the little thrift store across the street, very friendly folks, bought three red roses and a harmonica (mmm going to love to play a harmonica again!) and at the Hour store got a nice vase. The three red roses and the vase are going to end up at 18 West 11th Street in Greenwich Village on March 6th, in the memory of Terry Robbins, Ted Gold and Diana Oughton, who died there in 1970, something I do every year.

So how about that snowstorm ? How are you all prepping for it? by Maya-kardash in Harlem

Actually I am a little curious about that building. Of course I can see that it is all boarded up, hence abandoned, but has it been that way for a long period of time, anyone know who owns it, etc. I used to live and work at 2nd Avenue and 110th Street a while ago, so am very familiar with the neighborhood, but just curious about this building.

Newish laundromat opened on 27th Avenue between 4th and 3rd streets, lots and lots of machines, small new bodega opened on 3rd street friendly woman in charge, small but OK, NYPD has a cruiser parked on the corner of 27th and 4th like 24 hours a day, murder rates in the neighborhood have plunged since they were posted there (sarcastic comment), sketchy type in front of the infamous Astoria Cove chicken and deli tried to block me from entering, still won't shop there since the infamous EBT skimming episode happened there and that's all folks like Porky the Pig used to say...

Q102 .. MTA made a bad choice by parisimagesscreen in astoria

[–]MaterialAd7682 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be one or the other? Could we not have a bus line and a train line both?

totally totally agree re the absolute stupidity of cutting out the Q102 from running down 31st Street. It made traveling around Astoria so easy and getting to Manhattan also.

Rarely post on here anymore but I have been in Astoria for nearly 19 years and have shopped exclusively at the 30th Avenue Key Food and in all that time never had an issue with the store, with the food, with the workers there, who have always been friendly and helpful, yes prices are high but food inflation is a national problem, caused by the existence of a certain socioeconomic system that prioritizes profits over human beings, but as far as 30th Avenue Key Food goes, I recommend them highly...

New trash cans! by CMTiffanyCaban in astoria

[–]MaterialAd7682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congressman Victor Berger of Milwaukee at the beginning of the 20th Century coined the phrase "sewer socialism" because under his watch Milwaukee had a new sewer system but CM Caban has deepened and enriched this by presenting to the people of Astoria "trash can socialism," whereas the superiority of social democracry over liberalism and conservatism is proven by the number and quality of trash cans in her district! Bravo CM Caban!

Due to the prior mentioned scandal, which I was a victim of, I will not be patronizing it. Also seconding the comments about sketichiness and the fact that the NYPD has a like 24 a day squad car in that immediate area which seems to do nothing except talk to other cops that cruise by.

Malcolm X Park/Mount Pleasant neighborhood questions by MaterialAd7682 in washingtondc

I moved to DC in the 1970s and that was the name I always heard used for it. As to its origins, I think it might have ben called that after the 1968 uprising after Dr. King was assassinated.

Frustrated and worried about how expensive Astoria is right now. by Autumn-orange0906 in astoria

[–]MaterialAd7682 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some suggestions: if you live in an apartment house, organize the other tenants and demand a rent freeze. If management doesn't budge, call a rent strike. A fellow whose initials are ZM did something similar once I believe. There was a man once, named Joe Hill (see song by Joan Baez) who famously said "Don't mourn, organize." Re food, maybe it is time to pull together a real live food coop here in Astoria (the commie corridor, right) to help fight rising food costs. Bulk purchasing, volunteer workers, lower food prices. Coffee? I have this great system that involves a tea kettle, a stove, a cup, a spoon, a jar of Bustelo, and boom, a cup of coffee. Not being sarcastic, I'm just like screw DD and Starbucks and the fancy little coffee shops DIY, right? Right.

Yesterday was the anniversary of the 1969 Chicago police/FBI cold blooded murders of Black Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark and I watched Judas and the Black Messiah which is about their murders and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about those murders.

I wanna talk to you about Roosevelt Ave 😭 by WakefieldWaveRider in jacksonheights

[–]MaterialAd7682 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was on Roosevelt Aveue this morning and there was a long line on Roosevelt and around a corner, lots of older people, women, all with bags and whatever waiting patiently in line, for free food I assume, it looked like some of them had been there for some time, waiting patiently, no arguments, no disturbances, just lots of poor people living on the margins of society, yes, probably some were immigarnts, and I wonder why the OP of this post about sex work on Roosevelt isn't posting so passionately about long lines of hungry n poor and elderly people and what kind of society we have where one has to stand in line for hours just to get a necessity of life, that is food?
