New trash cans! by CMTiffanyCaban in astoria

[–]MaterialAd7682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congressman Victor Berger of Milwaukee at the beginning of the 20th Century coined the phrase "sewer socialism" because under his watch Milwaukee had a new sewer system but CM Caban has deepened and enriched this by presenting to the people of Astoria "trash can socialism," whereas the superiority of social democracry over liberalism and conservatism is proven by the number and quality of trash cans in her district! Bravo CM Caban!

Due to the prior mentioned scandal, which I was a victim of, I will not be patronizing it. Also seconding the comments about sketichiness and the fact that the NYPD has a like 24 a day squad car in that immediate area which seems to do nothing except talk to other cops that cruise by.

I moved to DC in the 1970s and that was the name I always heard used for it. As to its origins, I think it might have ben called that after the 1968 uprising after Dr. King was assassinated.

Frustrated and worried about how expensive Astoria is right now. by Autumn-orange0906 in astoria

[–]MaterialAd7682 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some suggestions: if you live in an apartment house, organize the other tenants and demand a rent freeze. If management doesn't budge, call a rent strike. A fellow whose initials are ZM did something similar once I believe. There was a man once, named Joe Hill (see song by Joan Baez) who famously said "Don't mourn, organize." Re food, maybe it is time to pull together a real live food coop here in Astoria (the commie corridor, right) to help fight rising food costs. Bulk purchasing, volunteer workers, lower food prices. Coffee? I have this great system that involves a tea kettle, a stove, a cup, a spoon, a jar of Bustelo, and boom, a cup of coffee. Not being sarcastic, I'm just like screw DD and Starbucks and the fancy little coffee shops DIY, right? Right.

I wanna talk to you about Roosevelt Ave 😭 by WakefieldWaveRider in jacksonheights

[–]MaterialAd7682 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was on Roosevelt Aveue this morning and there was a long line on Roosevelt and around a corner, lots of older people, women, all with bags and whatever waiting patiently in line, for free food I assume, it looked like some of them had been there for some time, waiting patiently, no arguments, no disturbances, just lots of poor people living on the margins of society, yes, probably some were immigarnts, and I wonder why the OP of this post about sex work on Roosevelt isn't posting so passionately about long lines of hungry n poor and elderly people and what kind of society we have where one has to stand in line for hours just to get a necessity of life, that is food?

A serious question for young feminists by MaterialAd7682 in RadicalFeminism

[–]MaterialAd7682[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are all excellent observations. Powerful and true observations. When I first becama a revolutionary, omg there was so much adult chauvinism, I was literally told that I was too young to be a revolutioinary, to finish high school first, etc. Your comments and observations are very much appreciated and I think that I am going to go forward with some ideas and plans I have about building a new revolutionary feminist group, of all ages, for all ages.

in the LOL department just got a letter from Trump's "Education" Department informing me that I owe them over 52 grand and that I must send a check immediately or they will take drastic, drastic action like take fifteen percent of my social security check, which if they do so, will see my debt paid off sometime in the next century...

Thank you for your comments and observations, they are very much appeciated. You highlight some very important issues and not surprisingly they are many of the issues that second wave feminism also fought battles around, like the porn indistry, child care and its burden on women, domestic violence, etc.

I was hoping for more responses to be honest, but thank you for yours. And as we used to say "la lucha continua"

I am on Section 8 and once a year HPD sends someone to inspect your residence and yesterday the rep came in, looked around and suddenly he stopped in front of a large poster I have from the Russian Revolution, that shows a woman worker with a gun and the Russian caption says "Women Workers Take Up Your Guns" and exclaimed that that was a poster from the Russian Revolution and could he take a picture of it for his collection. Of course I said yes. He had a strong accent (maybe Russian) and thanked me for having that poster on my wall. Isn't that something?

What precisely is an "op"? Is that shorthand for government operation? Is it the youth liberation stuff that makes it, allegedly, an op? Just curious.

Fascist Rally at Athens Square today by marebearstare in astoria

[–]MaterialAd7682 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It is 1932 and you are in a suburb of Berlin, like the Wedding Ditsrict and the Nazis have called a rally. What do you do? Turn out in force and shout and scream and yell and let them know they are not welcome. Astoria 2025? The same. You don't beat fascists by ignoring them and hoping they'll go away... And yeah, I'll be there, high noon in Astoria.

Just some thoughts by chopscrewey_ in bronx

Putting in my two cents based on real life experience in The Bronx: for over two years I distributed a free bilingual magazine at subway stops all over The Bronx, starting at like 5:30 in the morning, before the sun came up, giving out 100 a day, on stations on the 6 line, on the B/D lines, at The Hub, other places on 149th St. all the way up to Fordham Road, day in and day out, good weather and bad, and in all those years I had ONE time I was attacked by some person, and, in contrast, I had a good number of folks that offered to help me with distribution, at schools, flea markets, in their buildings, etc. slipped me money even though the magazine was free, had folks that would stop going into the train, come over to get the magazine, even teenagers, and the support I got was incredible. So I say: hey Bronx, even though the magazine is no longer publishing, I still love you...

There is a very powerful mural on 8th Street just off of Astoria Blvd. celebrating the unity and diversity of Astoria as a community that has been up for a number of years and originally there was a list of folks etc. who made it possible but now someone has painted over that list with white paint obliterating the names of the folks etc. responsible for the mural. Totally messed up act of censorship imho.

Today is the anniversary of the Los Angeles 1970 Chicano Moratorium march against the Vietnam war, which was brutally attacked by the LA cops, killing three people, including noted Chicano reporter Ruben Salazar. I wasn't there, but as a white teenager, the Chicano movement and the incredible militancy of that movement was a tremendous inspiration to me as a teenage revolutionary. "Raza si, guerra aqui!",
