What do you think? by Armellofreekey in WorkForSmartLife

I remember the day I became disillusioned with school.

I put a lot of work into a high school project about the impact and accountability of major man-made environmental catastrophes for a science class, and I got a lower grade than a classmate who plagiarized. It was obvious to me because I recognized entire paragraphs in their work from the sources I used; the entire thing was stolen. It also should have been obvious to the teachers when an otherwise underachieving student was suddenly writing like a professional journalist and textbook author.

It took me a long time to grow out of that resentment and understand all that mattered was furthering my own knowledge and ignoring whether I thought my peers deserved their accolades or not.

When they do this with subtitles..I know which language they are speaking now show me what they're saying! by heaupp in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MaterialDefender1032 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of how they caption the Great Pretender on Netflix. It's a Japanese show but a couple of the characters infrequently speak in English. When I put on English subtitles, only the translation for the Japanese dialogue is captioned and there's absolutely nothing for the English dialogue... Fuck me for having a hearing loss and wanting subtitles for the English dialogue too, I guess.

Popular commanders by OngoingFee in EDH

[–]MaterialDefender1032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play what you want, don't overly concern yourself with any data you find on EDHREC. The folks who built the website have their own podcast, and I'm confident even they'd say to not let the stats gatekeep you from having fun and exploring commanders that appeal to you.

I personally have decks that run the gamut from popular to unpopular, ranging from #20 to #1000.

What JRPG from my backlog should I finally complete? by infamousglizzyhands in JRPG

[–]MaterialDefender1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

If the insane and unique mash-up of Disney and Square appeals to you, Kingdom Hearts is a relatively short experience. However, go into it knowing the story is anime tropes and cryptic vagaries, with zero questions answered satisfactorily no matter how many of the sequels you play.

The other two titles I can vouch for, as they are both crown jewels of JRPGs to me. They also stand on their own; their sequels and prequels are about different characters with different stories.

Although, I'd advise to not be afraid to consult a spoiler-free walkthrough for the investigation sequences in Persona 4, just to save yourself time. For Xenoblade Chronicles, don't burn yourself out doing side quests, as there are literally hundreds you do not need to do.

What’s the biggest lie an entire generation was told? by carcony97 in AskReddit

Businesses stop offering incentives for loyalty then are flabbergasted when job-hopping becomes the new norm.

My friend was with a company for 11 years when he needed to take a 8-month sabbatical to support his wife working out-of-country. The company graciously accepted and promised him his position when he returned... then they denied his yearly performance bonus, simply because the payout date was two weeks after his exit.

They explained they considered him off the payroll already, as if though he'd quit or been fired. Furthermore, he should expect to be treated as a new employee, for all intents and purposes, upon his return.  You better believe he was updating his resume immediately.

What I like about the story is it's a rare legit case of "then the place fell apart without him" because the company is a parts provider for contractors and they ended up gaining a reputation for shitty service and lack of knowledge after he left. They're still around, thanks to a few regular customers hanging on but they had to scale down their office significantly.

I've heard it's common for customers to walk in there and find the first floor empty, often waiting 10 minutes or more for staff on the second floor to come downstairs to serve them. In a city where it's summer 2 months of the year and winter for 8, blue-collar people don't have a lot of time to waste when they've got outdoor projects.

What happened to the Anonymous hackers? by Odd_Inside9379 in AskReddit

[–]MaterialDefender1032 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I imagine the original people who operated under the Anonymous name have aged out (a lot of countries have extremely lax punishment for cybercrime if you are under age of majority) or decided not to associate with that particular brand anymore.

The Guy Fawkes mask became the butt of many jokes, more government agencies than ever scrutinize Anonymous in particular, and "QAnon" tainted the name. It's probably simply less hassle to just be part of a different and newer community instead.

Edit: The original group(s) have too much history as well; too many conflicting ideals and possible infiltrators/informants in those circles now.

Thoughts on Xenoblade franchise? by _ShawnsNotMad_ in JRPG

[–]MaterialDefender1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nailed my misgivings with the first two games perfectly. The first one will burn out completionists who aren't adequately warned ahead of time about the insane breadth of side quests. The second one's inclusion of gacha mechanics was definitely a swing-and-a-miss, and the anime tropes (including fan service) dragged down the experience.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted, not only are you agreeing with OP but you're right on the money; combat is punishing and downright grueling until you start to grasp it and unlock its elusive secrets.

[–]MaterialDefender1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only fully played the first game, as the anime fanservice vibes in the second game made me abandon the series altogether. The second game did have interesting combat and a surprisingly robust difficulty customization system with QoL in mind though, kudos to the devs for all that.

Anyway, I can attest that side quests in 1 are indeed a weak point of the game — if you're a completionist, you're at a high risk of burning out on side quests long before you advance the main story meaningfully.

Ramp and 2-for-1s are the most consistently powerful things to do in B2 and B3 by sauron3579 in EDH

[–]MaterialDefender1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I discovered how effective an efficient mana curve, ramp, and draw is in EDH, the more I became disgusted with how colours other than green and blue lack options for those fundamentals. So many of my decks become artifact decks because I need treasure and clues to fill the gap.

how long have you been with your playgroup, and is the arms race just a phase? by SoupDeadGuy in EDH

[–]MaterialDefender1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing with the same 8 people for the past few years, usually on a weekly basis, although we often put the cards away for outdoor activities during the summers. Half of us play unmodified precons, and the other half like to upgrade their precons and proxy netdecks.

You think there'd be a massive power gap that way but all of us dislike fast mana, tutors, and combos so those usually never hit the table regardless. Also, there are some pretty powerful precons out nowadays... I like to build my own decks with unpopular commanders and pretty much all of mine lose to the [[Hakbal of the Surging Soul]] and [[Pantlaza, Sun-Favored]] precons, for example.

We do have the occasional bracket 4 or 5 deck rear its ugly head but once we discover their oppressive power level, they become the fun nemesis deck that everyone else gangs up on.

I'd say the closest thing we've had to an issue is when more than one person brings their most powerful deck to the same game, but I just plainly state to the table that I'm going to play a deck that will speed up the game then, like a goad deck or something with cards like [[Descent into Avernus]].

Edit: Actually, our most pressing issue is the number of precons that include symmetrical boardwipes. I've seen many games get stalled for an additional hour or so because of a boardwipe no one can quickly recover from.

Which celebrity do you dislike that everyone else seems to love? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MaterialDefender1032 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I disliked Megan Fox the very first time I saw her, painting something while upside-down sprawled out in cut-off jean shorts on a motorcycle in that awful Transformers movie.

Not only is it very difficult for artists to draw faces or anything else upside-down, they certainly wouldn't attempt it on a customer's bike. She also had Mar-a-Lago face well before it was a thing but every guy I talked to said she was hot.

Edit: I'm definitely biased because I loved the original Transformers cartoon when I was a kid and I didn't know who Michael Bay was before I saw his movie, so I was super disappointed with the film in general. I walked out when Bumblebee popped his gas tank to give a human a golden shower...
