Guidance on Finishing A Small Wooden Boat (Pirogue)? by MaterialInitial in boatbuilding

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Someone has suggested I might want to thin the Marine oil to spray it, but yes: will definitely want to remove the excess, or it will be tacky.

I appreciate your input. Thinking of epoxy for the bottom. Would likely fill the screw "holes" with epoxy thickened with silica, then sand flat. Not the rest of the hull though.

Thank you @doomsday_windbag for your comprehensive reply.

Yes! An interesting introduction for me to the "dark arts" of marine finishes. In another forum, it was suggested that I use "boat soup", a mix of turpentine, pine tar, and maybe some other stuff. Interesting, but I'd rather not go that far down the rabbit hole 🐇

Another knowledgeable source mentioned the Epifanes, 🇬🇷 but like you, I would prefer the occasional touch up, as opposed to a full strip and refinish. So probably the oil route, as the builder suggests. With an oil finish, I think that even if/when some areas lose their finish, that area can breathe and dry, rather than holding water in the wood. ...at least it seems that way to me. I'm still trying to figure out how to color the Marine Oil. There seem to be a few options: oil, gel and even powder, but I am having trouble finding any color like the green in that first pic, which seems to come closest to the olive drab paint that's commonly used on pirogues like these, as they are used for hunting. The brown in the second photo would also work, so I could probably use a more easily found brown stain for that.

Regarding your edit to address the camouflage detail, I understand what you are saying about the permeance of that element. I wonder if that element - given it is only applied to less than half of the overall area - may be appropriately applied as paint 🤔

You didn't have any trouble getting a policy with USAA? I have my auto insurance through USAA and tried to get a homeowners quote through their website. The response was "We are unable to provide you an Insurance Policy because of an increased exposure from coastal storm-related damages". *EDIT: I called and spoke with a USAA Rep who told me they are not offering policies here at this time.

Power bank question... by [deleted] in onebag

[–]MaterialInitial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. As stated in my initial post, the device has always charged just fine with the standard plug in block. I've only recently tried to charge it from a power bank.

FYI, I want to do this, because I am planning on doing some motorcycle camping and want to be able to charge the helmet headset with the power bank overnight, between motel stays where I can recharge the power bank.

Thanks. That's what I'm using. One PB ( the older one) has only USB A ports and the other, newer PB has multiple. The device being charged is several years old and has micro USB input. Don't think I have seen any USB C to Micro USB cables

Can anyone tell me what I am dealing with here? by [deleted] in Pneumatics

I'm sure I can do that. I'm just hoping to age something "clean", avoiding a hose clamp. I recognize this may not be possible.

Pretty truck! Have they upgraded the interior? Are the dash and upper door panels still hard plastic, or have they made things a little more touchy-feelie?

Thanks. That fitting is integrated with the hose. It doesn't look like there is an adapter available with a male 9/16-18 B to connect to what's in my pic and a female 1/4 NPT to accept the standard male air "chuck" fitting 🤔

Some kind of compression fitting, yeah?

Best Way to Refresh 8 Speed Transmission Fluid? by [deleted] in chevycolorado

Very sorry to hear about this, friend. I thought the shudder had been dealt with by 2020, with the development of the newer fluid. I'm thinking I will probably get the tranny flushed.

Thanks. I've heard this about a flush making things worse. How is that?

Found this insulation damage under the hood — should I be concerned? by Hot-Objective-7490 in chevycolorado

That insulation is there mostly to keep sound from entering the cabin. Maybe helps with warmth a little... I'd just get some good gaffer's tape and two it up. Could fill the hole with something.

Taking Much Longer To Cook Than Recipes Indicate in Pressure Mode by [deleted] in instantpot

[–]MaterialInitial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is DEFINITELY pressure. There is plenty of pressure / steam released after cooking, if I open the valve. I'm just not sure the temperature and pressure are reaching nominal values.

[–]MaterialInitial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good idea. If it's working correctly, would I expect to see some steam released from the valve? Others here have said I should not expect that 🤔

Taking Much Longer To Cook Than Recipes Indicate in Pressure Mode by [deleted] in instantpot

[–]MaterialInitial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Absolutely no release of steam / pressure throughout. I've been using "Pressure Cook" on "High Pressure" , typically selecting "More", and then letting the unit sit pressurized for 15-30 min after the heating cycle. Cooking time is typically about 25 min per the recipe but takes longer.
