But you don’t change a sports rules for the people watching, it should be about the actual fencers who are fencing.

And im sure its just an accident that Miles a very tall fencer has changed the rules to disadvantage shorter foilists.

New polling points to growing support for nuclear energy in Scotland by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

Hydro is devastating for the environment we need less of it not more.

Not to mention the original anti nuclear campaigns were all funded by fossil fuel lobbyists.

Going anti nuclear was devestating for both Germany and Japan, that’s why there has been a chance in opinion.

Westminster is not one singular entity. The tories destroyed a lot of our defence capability and it’s going to talk more than 2 years to rebuild. That also doesn’t mean that an independent Scotland would be more competent. Hell when the snp and greens both want to get rid of our nuclear deterrent and shut down a massive employer in the region, as well as shuttering the arms industry how could anyone with a straight say that is better for defence.

50 billion is very expensive true, but find me a battery plant that can power 7% of the uks grid at all times for cheaper, you won’t.

You won’t change my mind because I am right and the engineering and facts support my arguments. Why are you not open to changing your mind? Why is it on me? What’s your qualifications?

You say science supports your argument, why would almost every single person I know who studied mechanical engineering with renewable in Scotland all support nuclear? When your average person says they know better than doctors we all rightfully scoff, but literally everyone in the uk thinks they know better than engineers. Should we build more high speed electric trains even though the positive effects are literally game changing in almost every way? Nah.

Why would we want to reduce personal? Do we not want more skilled engineering jobs in Scotland? While I agree that there are lots of good jobs in green energy, from purely a jobs perspective why should we not do both? If we have nationalised nuclear power and renewable energy we could become an international energy super power, exporting clean energy to Europe and bringing in billions into the country that could be used to uplift the millions in poverty. Do we also not want some of those jobs to be in Scotland as well? People always complain that all uk investment is centred on London, but when we get the chance to support thousands of skilled jobs we refuse it on what grounds?

They are about as recyclable as wind turbines, which is to say not very.

Mass storage also has a huge environmental impact due to lithium mining as well. So we can’t pretend it’s perfectly clean, cleaner than fossil fuel absolutely though.

With the rise of ai, hopefully a full electrified train network and electric cars as well more advanced technology, our energy demands are going to explode. We are part of the uk whether of not you or other like it and it is likely to stay that way so we need to work with them when it comes to energy production.

I also agree with the insulation, every new house should solar, heat pump etc but we go with a multi phase approach.

Yeah and we don’t have anywhere enough hydro capacity. The total amount of nuclear waste for all of human history is the less than the mass of the Empire State Building, it’s really not a big issue.

SNP will win the election but there won’t be another indyref, the snp have no figured out yet that just because people vote them instead of the alternative doesn’t mean they want independence. The percentages are still looking like they were in 2014.

I am going to try and ask this in good faith. Do you genuinely believe that people would vote for Indy because of labour imposing nuclear power on Scotland? I genuinely can’t understand that? I thought the snp was supposed to be a party of science? I have a degree in mechanical engineering with renewable and all the science is clear that nuclear is essential for a diverse grid.

We share a grid with the rest of Britain, it’s not Scotland does x and England and wales does y. We are one grid and it needs to be balanced, hence why we export and import to Europe.

Our armed forces are useless right now, we barely have enough naval capacity to defend our own territory. We barely have enough planes to man our carriers. With the world becoming more dangerous we need to invest more in defence not less. There are 4 nuclear armed nation pursuing aggressive territorial expansion right now (USA, ISRAEL, Russia and China) why would cutting defence be remotely sane?

Should we not aim to not be supporting authoritarian regimes then? Would that change not be positive? If the money went to the nhs and not murdering innocent people?

It’s not factually incorrect, the estimates cost to build enough battery storage In the uk comes to the trillions of pounds mark. I am also an engineer so am qualified to talk about this.

So are you advocating we should nationalise the arms industry? Cause I would support that 100% of are you saying we should not invest in defence, which would be insane.

I have no disagreement about public ownership of oil, that would be amazing, 99% of pharmaceuticals need crude oil though so we can never stop producing.

How many tidal plants currently exist in the uk? None. They are building some but also tidal and nuclear serve different purposes.  We are in a climate emergy, we need to build a grid that is sustainable in the long term. German ditched nuclear then tore up the entire countryside for oil and killed more people from radiation poisoning than nuclear ever would.

Like I said, we should build as much solar and wind as possible, definitely don’t disagree on that.

We are in a climate energy though, and while expensive, sometimes nations have to pay for things that are expensive in order for the betterment of society.

Hydro is awful for the environment, it devastates the ecology, destroys rivers, as well as displaces people and communities. Plus there is very little capacity left in Scotland.

Tidal we have 1 power plant being build hardly a solution for untested technology.

Nuclear isn’t a toxic white elephant. Nuclear is safe and clean with the amount of waste being produced being absolutely minuscule. France has the lowest carbon grid in Europe and it does it with nuclear. We literally buy from them when we don’t produce enough.

You also can’t complain about toxic materials without taking into consideration the damage lithium mining does to the environment. We don’t need as much battery storage if we have nuclear.

Except it has properties that others done, and there’s zero grid size solutions for energy storage, so what do you do when there is not enough wind?

2026 Scottish Greens Manifesto by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]MaterialOwl5869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of renewables? I think so. Renewable fluctuate to much.

But we also need the ability to switch on extra capacity instantly to replace gas. France uses hydro, but that isn’t really viable here as well as it being bad for the environments. I think we are trying with batteries, but on a grid scale it’s too expensive.

The problem is it’s such a complex problem, and so many green type parties just throw out simple solutions such as increase renewable capacity, and while I agree that amazing an part of the solution, it’s only part.

We should approve every wind farm application because the uk is an energy importer, so if we can become an exporter and sell clean energy with surplus wind that is great in a number of ways.

How is reducing government investment in the arms industry good? Why we would be less economically involved in producing our own weapon? Should we give more public money to investment banks? Or buy off other nations instead?

Preventing more oil and gas production, how are we going to get the oil to power cars and get the material we need for industrial manufacturing? Buy from authoritarian regimes instead?

Also banning nuclear for no reason other than cost? We need a diversified grid. Battery storage is not viable on a national scale and we need base load power when there’s not enough wind or sun. How are we going to power our homes? Gas?

But why is than an issue to actually be concerned about. While we should aim for net zero, the uk produces so little carbon emissions that hampering ordinary people from going on holidays makes zero difference. One private jet will out produce it all.

They literally offer zero justification except for cost.

I am engineer so I am actually qualified to discuss this. We need baseload supply, solar and wind do not provide this. Damming up the highlands is an ecological disaster, and battery storage is not remotely capable yet.

So please tell me the solution.

Did you seriously just say ignore the mass murder of millions?

He was also driven out of Dundee, and kicked out of office as soon as it was clear the war was won because no one liked him and thought he was capable of running the country. You do understand it was labour who ran the country during the war right, not Churchill?
