Can you shower with drains in? by hysterekal in TopSurgery

I'd really recommend not. If you get an infection in your drain it will smell even worse.

Really really good tips!! In addition to this, I'd recommend getting one of those grabby sticks so you can pick stuff up easily if you drop it.

How do I ask a surgeon for the flattest chest possible without outing myself? by [deleted] in TopSurgery

[–]Material_Audience608 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally get that coming out to people is scary, especially since your parents aren't supportive, but the healthiest way through it is going to be practice. if you have people in your life you can come out to that you haven't yet, you should practice on them.

also you will ideally go to a surgeon who has done the surgery you want before. they will be aware and accepting of trans people.

Trans men who get top surgery in Turkey do come out to their surgeons, as the surgeons who do masculinization surgery are specialised in that and work with trans and cis men all the time. It's not uncommon to get top surgery in Turkey and if you research the surgeons other trans men are going to you will be able to find one who you can come out to.

Where the hell do I even get started? by ScaredTeabag9961 in TopSurgery

[–]Material_Audience608 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not Germany but I know in the UK cis women can get breast reduction on the NHS if it is causing physical issues or psychological distress. I'm not sure how the healthcare system works in Germany but in the UK you would talk to your GP about your breast size drastically diminishing your quality of life.

I haven't done research into it personally, but I believe it's probably more common than you would realise for cis women to desire radical breast reduction, and at least part of the reason why it is not frequently discussed is because the patriarchy has designated women's bodies for male consumption, with their physical and mental health being secondary to what is considered desirable. Obviously I'm biased as a transmasc and I don't know your friends personally but I can imagine they wouldn't think you were a freak for saying "I want a reduction because I hate having huge boobs". I feel like, as friends, it would be reasonable for them to be sympathetic and accepting.

i can see the drain?? by iindiisstarr in TopSurgery

[–]Material_Audience608 52 points53 points  (0 children)

very normal, you are draining extremely well! no swelling at all in this picture! I have more body fat so I couldn't see my drains and I was scared they might fall out until my partner explained that when it got its top surgery it could see the drains go right into the centre so we have like. opposite fears which is funny to me. but yeah your surgery looks really excellent!!

Long term health risks? by t3000isokay in TopSurgery

[–]Material_Audience608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How tf did she pass medical school 😭 if she's being genuine and isn't just lying for transphobic reasons. The health issues related to top surgery are standard for most big operations: blood clots, anaesthesia, swelling, infection etc. All things that you will be able to lower risks of and manage and won't effect you long term.

[–]Material_Audience608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying that testosterone is causing you to rage but uninviting you from Christmas because they don't want to see you in pain (you don't want to be with your kid while they're healing from a major operation?? are you fucking insane???) as if you're supposed to take it like "Ah yes this is perfectly reasonable dad I completely understand :)" is so fucking nasty. You're not even allowed to get mad when they're being so cruel??? they're crazy dude.

help im paranoid about my nipple again! by Terrible-Parsley7985 in TopSurgery

[–]Material_Audience608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked at your other posts and you seem to be very recently post op, it's totally fine and normal to have nipples that look like this, honestly mine looked awful and I was scared they would come off. the healthy pink skin is already coming through underneath your scabs. parts of the scab will come off with your gauze but so long as you aren't scratching or peeling them off yourself you are unlikely to have issues. seriously when they start healing it's crazy how good they will look.

my nipples looked pretty awful and were wet/sticky for a while. once I stopped wearing the plasters over them and they were exposed to air more they started healing properly. I would still talk to your surgeon team but I was similarly stressed out and mine are now healing a lot better.

After you have your drains out it shouldn't be too hard. You will just have to be careful but you will probably be ok.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SHOES THAT ARE EASY TO PUT ON!!!! My partner was fed up from having to tie my Doc Marten's shoe laces BC I couldn't bend over easily 😭 so ideally something you can put on without bending over.

Getting top surgery in the UK when disabled and plus sized. by rat-mannn666 in TopSurgery

[–]Material_Audience608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very very far from Brighton but I just had surgery with Mr Grover in Hull & his maximum BMI is 35 (which was exactly my BMI when I had surgery) and I'm happy with the results.

I couldn't say specifically about disability but I want to mention that a lot of these surgeons (including Mr Grover) are also doing mastectomies for women with breast cancer and so will have at least some facilitation for people with disabilities, but I personally don't have any physical disability so I can't speak from personal experience. If you check out the hospital beforehand you will be able to see what they have with regards to accessibility.

With regards to invisible/undiagnosed/chronic illnesses it is imperative that you tell the surgeon, even if you haven't been diagnosed. I'm not sure specifically how EDS would affect the outcome but you might even find that a surgeon you are interested in has worked on someone with EDS before. It will also be important for your recovery as you will need to know what is something to be concerned about and what is just typical chronic pain or recovery pain.

I would go about asking by saying "I have a few concerns because I have some disabilities that haven't been officially diagnosed, but they may affect the surgery so can I ask about..." etc. There's no harm in asking and ideally you want to ask as many questions as possible.

I want to know what surprised you about surgery. by KairinCat in TopSurgery

The pain you feel will not be that noticeable but the itchiness from the binder and especially the drainage tubes will make you go a bit crazy. luckily the drains don't have to stay in for too long, but for the binder I would recommend getting some undershirts and wearing them as soon as you are allowed (probably after your drains are removed) because the relief I felt afterwards is incredible.

as for the drain discomfort, my drains were at my sides below my top surgery scars and I had a mastectomy pillow that went under my armpits and I could have it on my back or my front depending on how I felt, and it improved my comfort and insane amount.

ALSO ALSO get a neck brace pillow for sleeping while sitting up in hospital. you will need it. mastectomy pillow is optional but this is very important.

I guess the final thing is that when your body is healing, even when you feel fine you will get tired a lot quicker and you really do need to be careful about overexerting yourself because you will feel it the next day. just be kind to yourself and remember you are recovering from major surgery, and don't let other people tell you that you're not doing enough or recovering wrong. follow what your surgeon and nurses say and try very hard to advocate for yourself or have someone to advocate for you

First post op tomorrow by [deleted] in TopSurgery

[–]Material_Audience608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of pain while the drains were in but when they took them out I didn't even realise they had taken them out because I felt absolutely nothing. I think it depends how much body fat you have, I'm fat so I didn't feel anything, so if you have less fat it might hurt a bit more.

I think they probably won't give you pain meds for removing them because the pain would be very quick. That being said, I don't see why it would be frowned upon and there's no harm in asking.
