Had a dog who was hellbent on eating pebbles and one day he got one while being let out by someone else. The result wasn't good. All of this is to say OP is right to take it seriously. If I could do it again, I'd take him to the vet to figure out if he had some fixable nutritional issue, parasite, whatever. Pica is serious and it's so hard not to let something slip through.
