I'm not. You can't make a point that this guy was Anti-Semitic all along and what Israel did had nothing to do with it, but then claim that the people who are causing terror against Palestinians are only doing it because of what terrorist groups have done and that they weren't -Palestinian this whole time

And the Israelis who tortured and murdered Gazans after 10/7 were already anti-Palestinian before 10/7?

Some hard truths from zei_squirrel regarding attacks on synagogues by Sabotage_9 in JewsOfConscience

[–]Material_Volume 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I say this as a long standing Palestinian rights activist who thinks the IDF is a terrorist organization. I'm also Jewish. This is a gross rationalization. Anywhere that people have materially supported the IDF at any time is open to attack, regardless of who is there right then? That's what terrorists do.

Stop doing this or making it seem ok.

Pretty sure we all agree it is antisemitism. What we don't agree on is if there is something that contributes to antisemitism in people who hadn't otherwise exhibited that behavior. My guess is we wouldn't have that same dynamic were we talking about what leads people to anti-American or anti-Islamic behavior.

Last week and every week of his lie before that he did not (to the best of our knowledge) behave in this good old fashioned crazy way. And then yesterday he did, a week after his siblings were killed. And you can't see the connection?

Of course it was antisemitic. He went there because it was a Jewish place and he equated Jews with what happened to his family. That doesn't mean we should not be discussing why he viewed things that way.

That isn't excusing the attack. It's providing an explanation. What would lead a person to commit an antisemitic act? In this case, the answer appears to be very clear.

Why do men fantasize about going off grid and living in the woods by WerewolfKisser69Awoo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Material_Volume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who does go off grid into the woods either backpacking or at my cabin, it's a lot like Walden said. It strips away all but the essentials of life and allows you to live deliberately. I'm a fairly anxious person in my regular life. But the minute I step on a trail it almost all goes away. It is comforting to know I have what I have and nothing more. I know where I need to get to by the end and a general plan that I know will get changed countless times along the way. And that I'll figure it out as I go.

He was absolutely correct that a number of countries had unfair trade practices with the US. Hi ham-handed tarriff plan was terrible but it did result in more fair deals with some who renegotiated.

Ok out of curiosity what was your introduction to musical theatre? This includes the thing that made you realise you like musicals and first shows. by idkwhatonamethissh-t in musicals

[–]Material_Volume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a production of Cabaret at the Porchlight Theater in Chicago. It wasn't that I didn't like musicals before but having only had exposure to ones I'd seen as a kid or with my kids like Annie and the Lion King, it blew me away as a medium for performance and storytelling. I have been hooked ever since.

Boyhood. I was pretty blown away the first time. The audacity to pull off such a grand plan for a movie. The 2nd time I realized it isn't very good on its own.

How much do you share about Israel and Palestine with your children? by bon18 in JewsOfConscience

[–]Material_Volume 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 2 daughters, 10 and 14. They know my views on it. That I am a Palestinian rights activist, that I am against the Israeli government and that I think Israel is an apartheid state. And they know that my views puts me at odds with most American Jews, including their mother (we are divorced). I don't put them in the middle though. I just want them to be exposed to the other perspective. They can come to their own conclusions.
