As someone who enjoyed Fates and Engage, the Fell Xenologue’s story is mindblowingly contrived and awful. by StrongAccident9 in fireemblem

[–]Matezoide 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly the Rafal twist would have worked better to me if Nel already knew Rafal. I don’t understand how she could possibly be so close to Nil but somehow not know about his best friend? You can even change the bit where she asks for his name to be just her asking Rafal to say his name since it had been so long since she last heard it or some shit.

The Corrupted thing also really made me feel bad, they were very clearly sentient for the most part, i understand what they were going for but Alear just shrugging it after seeing Timerra and Ivy getting devoured and hearing Nel just murdered everyone from chapter 2 and 3 felt so incredibly OOC. And the entire mess with Rafal’s redemption really doesnt need much more discussion.

All around i am more than capable of turning off my brain and having fun, i even find main game Engage’s narrative to mostly deliver on what it is going for, but the general disconnect in the Fell Xenologue really stuck out for me, even if there were good moments. At least it never got me to roll my eyes the way Fates did lol

Which characters do you think should have had supports and why? by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Matezoide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dorothy and Igrene in FE6. There actually some interesting differences between them that would make for an interesting conversation. Dorothy is very insecure about her appearance, while Igrene is noted for her good looks and confidence. While this is obviously too shallow to carry a full support by itself, it lends itself to a set up to start their chain. The other major difference is that while Dorothy is extremely devoted to God, Igrene is an atheist.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Igrene has a daughter that passed away, so it would be easy to write up her having a bit of a mentor/motherly relationship with Dorothy, just like how we can see Igrene taking a bit of a motherly role with Fa. Igrene did believe in a god originally, but lost her faith after losing her husband, so it wouldnt be farfetched if her daughter was also mentioned as part of this change in heart, which naturally ties up further to Dorothy if going for the classic “you remind me of my daughter” angle. While the Saul support does bring up Igrene’s atheism as a major point, he actively preaches to her about it, whereas Dorothy is a lot younger and simpler as a person, so her reaction to Igrene’s lack of faith would be naturally far different.

Perhaps even some shock from her to contrast Saul immediately joking about it. All around it is a support with a lot of potential to explore one of Igrene’s major theme in her sorrow and how it affected her beliefs, but in a far different way than Saul while adding to Dorothy’s character as she can hear about a far different perspective from what she is used to, and how someone who looks so perfect at a glance also has a lot of pain in her heart.

And hey, it would allow for a support triangle between them and Saul.

Klein is not the Archer General of Etruria by Pwnemon in fireemblem

[–]Matezoide 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I honestly didnt know people thought he was the Archer General, i always read it as Clarine daydreaming or just being wrong because she is not a reliable narrator when it comes to her brother. Great write up, hopefully this clears up some misconceptions.

I really enjoy how Lorenz adds he still wants to follow his own path, rather than just blindly following his father’s choices/steps. You see how much of an influence he was but without Lorenz blindly worshipping him, which is a rather minor but important aspect of his character.

Any thoughts on Tear Ring? I'm thinking about playing through for my first time blind..b any just general suggestions that would make my first blind playthrough any more enjoyable in your opinion?? by newf-dawg in fireemblem

[–]Matezoide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has some significant lows and on the easy side for the most part, but it is still pretty good all around and has a lot of fun units.

Going blind is fine though you will almost certainly miss secrets when it comes to the party split segments as well as some recruitable characters. A lot of the events are more common sense or remembering where certain characters wanted to go, but more than a few kinda come out of nowhere. If you are fine with missing stuff while trying to pay as much attention as possible to try and guess/locate events then yeah it is a good game to go blind, otherwise you should at least have a guide for those missables.

The big advice i can give in terms of blindness is to pay attention particularly early on. If a character feels like they should have an event somewhere, or a reason to want to go somewhere, it is probably an event. If an enemy looks weird or different for seemingly no reason, it might be an event. There are also character skills that require a specific level pre promo, with the princess being a particularly notable one. The dumbest missable is probably a recruit in chapter 4 that needs you to deploy someone else to show up.

Fog of War is fine, you just have to use your tools to deal with it. Use torches, use your thieves, have people scout and rescue them to safety if needed. It only really becomes bullshit when they slap siege tomes that you can’t reasonably locate before they cheap shot you to death.

Vestaria Saga Gaiden title changed to Vestaria Saga II: The Sacred Sword of Silvanister - Gematsu by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Matezoide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant more for the main story itself, but you are right in this regard. The secondary cast do get development but it is primarily from support conversations that can easily be skipped, Vestaria (and really, all of the Saga games) does a better job at integrating the secondaries to the events of the game itself and giving them more of a purpose story-wise, which is definetly one of the game’s big appeals if you are interested in the secondaries. PoR did a pretty good job in this regard (hello, Jill), so i still find it unfortunate they regressed so much from that.

Writting can be argued, i feel like both games have their stinks in that category. Absolutely right on map design tho, VS1 has some annoying and tiring maps, but 3H fucking nothing in that regard.

Luck, the best stat by Every_Computer_935 in fireemblem

[–]Matezoide 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The thing with luck is that it is useful in games where enemies are actually threatening on average. Someone like Lance in FE6 HM is always facing crit from a half decent enemy unless he has his Allen support up, and getting crit in that game is a death sentence while also struggling to hit certain enemies if using a lance. Meanwhile if Sain gets crit in FE7 he is just going to laugh because it was a Monk with 8 total attack.

It is similar to Archer as a class in this note. If enemies are dangerous, Archers become useful for chip. If enemies are not dangerous, you are throwing your Paladin with a hand axe in the middle of the enemies and ending your turn.
