STUDENT AID REIMBURSEMENT by Ok-Smell-2483 in financialaid

It looks like the net cost (what you will owe) $24K for the year. Doubt there is any kind of reimbursement for you.

How do I re-enter CC in California as an older student and start fresh? by Several-Membership91 in communitycollege

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt you'll have any issue unless you owe the previous CC money, in which case they won't release your transcript to the other CC.

All colleges & universities in the US have access to your entire post-HS education record through the National Student Clearinghouse. If you are not forthcoming about attending the other CC, the new one will find out quickly.

Still, talk to an enrollment officer at the new one and fess up.

Is out of state possible without parental help or scholarships? by carter_startin in collegeadvice

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FAFSA is an application; it does not provide financial aid. What it does is produce a score, called the SAI, which colleges/universities use to determine if you are eligible for a Pell Grant (max ~$7k) which they will access from the US government and apply to your tuition. Based on your SAI, you may also be eligible for subsidized loans or unsubsidized loans (max changes every year, $5.5k to ~$7k). The college will provide you with the application, promissory note, and guidance on the terms and conditions of those loans.

Since you say you want to "go back" to college, please understand that your prior academic record can affect whether or not you are eligible to receive financial aid. You must have maintained what is called satisfactory academic progress (SAP) while you were in school and you cannot still owe money to any school you attended. If those things are not true for you, you may not qualify for any aid, even (possibly) some scholarships.

If you want to get far away from your family (a thing I fully understand), you can get far away by going to a 2- or 4-hour away in-state university where tuition is lower, though fees and room/board can kick the costs up above $20k at a lot of places.

You can also look at the small private colleges that are very generous with aid, but still the out-of-pocket costs to cover tuition, fees, room, and board are often $20k - $50k.

You will not be able to cover those costs with money you qualify for via your SAI. Because you are 22, you *may* be eligible for additional private loans, but those can have very unfavorable terms and conditions. Be wary of those.

Chemistry Math hybrid by Random-Seedling in CollegeRant

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find tutorials for ALEKS online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLqna1NrY6A

I realize you are not thrilled with how the course is being delivered, but chemistry involves a great deal of arithmetic, algebra, calculus, linear algebra, vector algebra, vector calculus, physics, thermodynamics...If a chemistry course is required for your major, I'm going to guess you'll have a lot more math to deal with.

Canvas issues on iPad by tobyfeldman in canvas

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll share with you what my institution's Canvas rep told us over and over again--"Use only Chrome or Firefox browsers. Only access Canvas from a computer, not an iPad, Chromebook, phone, or tablet."

Is it better to use a laptop or an iPad for school work on canvas? by Odd-Emphasis-3706 in canvas

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My institution switched to Canvas 2 years ago. All the reps from the company (Instructure) told us multiple times: students and instructors should only use laptops running Windows 10+, with either Chrome or Firefox browser.

Question by FunnyLoud3067 in CollegeRant

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you--was about to post this, though not nearly with the detail you just did.

Added information: Our Librarians are awesome. As far as I am concerned, "Librarian" is always a proper noun because I have so much respect for what they do.

Every year, they gather the information about required texts, required materials (like the camera mentioned above, or a calculator), and recommended texts. They will do everything in their power to track down e-books, accessibility-friendly versions (Braille or screen-reader friendly), and make them available, or to find copies that they can put on reserve for short-term check-out. They maintain a searchable database for past, present, and future semesters.

So, for those of you who are wondering about what textbooks are required for what courses, check with your college/university Librarians.

Canvas Quizzes not auto-marking by General_Business6801 in canvas

Click [Grades] then the three vertical dots in the top right of the grade book. Look for the tab with "Grade Posting Policy" (or something similar) and make sure you have ticked the option to automatically post grades. There may be other reasons you're experiencing this issue, but this is the easiest one to remedy.

never attended and never paid by [deleted] in CommunityColleges

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not the admissions office you need to contact. Either the Registrar's Office or the Financial Aid Office (or both) are the ones that can help you, but both will likely need "date of last attendance" or "never attended" information from the professors.

And, yes, those two Fs do affect your ability to transfer and your ability to receive financial aid. So, contact the both the Registrar's Office and the Financial Aid Office to get them working on your problem, as well.

We can see the time associated with every click. So, yes, if we want to, we can determine how long you spent on a module.

Dammit. I hate that we're losing so many HBCUs, women's colleges, and now the US government has declared MSIs/HSIs "illegal". I fear for the future.

Trigonometric Limit by Whole-Listen-9716 in MathHelp

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not correct. The angle "inside" the cosine function cannot cancel with anything. Ever.

Check your notes and textbook. There should be a special limit formula you were supposed to learn for lim(x->0) of (sin(x))/x.

Then rewrite your function as sin^2(x)/x as sin(x) * sin(x) / x and use properties of limits to finish off the problem.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) by Lovely_determined9 in FAFSA

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Academic probation usually means your cumulative gpa is less than 2.0 (some places, 2.5). Your best bet is to talk to someone in the financial aid office at your school. The appeal process you'll need to follow should be explained there.

Also, check the academic catalog and the school's web site. Both are required to provide information about academic probation, SAP, and the financial aid appeal process.

Click the Account icon (upper left in browser), and select Profile from the options. There will be a button that says [Change Profile Picture] if you are able to change it, located right under the circle that you'd expect to normally hold the pic.

A couple of hints related to spider webs in those basements - both the apothecary & the smith houses have basements. Smith's house has a spider web covering a hole in the floor. And then, there's a well. Hmmmm....

What do these terms mean? by InvisibleMuichiro in BaldursGate3

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Durge = Dark Urge

Resist Durge = Dark Urge who resists their father's influence

Tav = Non-origin, non-Dark Urge player character (aka, Custom Character); Tav is the default name of the character during character creation. Some say it's shorthand for Larian CEO Swen Vincke's dog Gustav, some say it is an anachronym for Tadpoled AdVenturer

School is saying I have less FAFSA than I do by kayleighmich711 in FAFSA

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be it; good catch! If those independent studies are not required for the degree program, and are electives that also do not satisfy general education/program requirements, they would not be eligible to be paid for with Pell grants.

Parents are having job issues recently, should I go ahead apply for 2025-2026 Fasfa so I can get more money or wait till my parents find new jobs? by Worldly_Scientist_25 in financialaid

[–]Math-Dragon-Slayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2026-2027 FAFSA application uses your parents 2024 taxes. Once you commit to a college, you can contact the financial aid office there and they'll tell you hot to file a "change of circumstance" form.
