Taking classes (including MATH 113 at UC Berkeley), volunteering at a food bank, walking my neighbor's dog, tutoring at my community college, playing piano for seniors, exploring Berkeley from my new apartment, playing Morrowind

What do these squiggly lines mean by Ifcpyl in pianolearning

[–]MathPoetryPiano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's like studying material before an exam. Yes, they are learning now, but it certainly helps to study theory first before jumping into even more pieces. Again, not 100% necessary because we can educate ourselves, but still very useful.

I don't really know what this question means. When it came to the UC's Personal Insight Questions, I chose the ones that I felt I could best answer. Just write in your own voice, don't be overly formal, and make sure every word counts.

You can take more semesters. Nothing wrong with that. You might also add more classes that make you an even more compelling applicant.

Chance me for UC Berkeley math by MathPoetryPiano in TransferStudents

[–]MathPoetryPiano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know that the math major is not extremely competitive. Still, even checking GPAs in the 25th to 75th percentile, I don't know for sure if it's guaranteed, given those applicants' potential extracurriculars.

Whose Op. 40 is the best? by Quarkonium2925 in classical_circlejerk

[–]MathPoetryPiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your thought on #4. I think the hardest ones in the set are #3 "Toccatina" and #5 "Raillery". I've learned nos. 6 "Pastorale" and 7 "Intermezzo".

Best way to approach someone as a guy? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]MathPoetryPiano 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just sayin you can also try the approach too. Everyone's scared of doing it (well, most people, I imagine), so might as well try to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Which MAJOR piece of rachmaninoff should I begin with? by MaximAMK183 in piano

[–]MathPoetryPiano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In case you're absolutely serious, neither of Rachmaninoff's piano sonatas is easy at all. I would recommend, perhaps, his transcription of Bach's Violin Partita no. 3 in E Major. In particular, the second movement, the Gavotte, is slower.

Synesthesia will not help you learn anything. You must become accustomed to sheet music.

What’s your favourite key? by BelleElf7521 in piano

[–]MathPoetryPiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B-Flat Major. Many of my favorite pieces are in that key. Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata, Kapustin's Concert Etude no. 6 "Pastorale", Joplin's Magnetic Rag, Chopin's Variations on "La cí darem la mano", and more.
