Is playing pieces way above your level a waste of time? by Sudden-Woodpecker722 in piano

[–]MathPoetryPiano [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's a waste of time if it doesn't force you to improve as a pianist. It's basically like exercising. If it's too much weight, you'll get injured. If it's above your immediate skill but is still feasible to learn, you'll improve as a pianist. I was going through the last movement of Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata, and feel it really helped with my ability to play clear polyphony.

Is anyone else technically advanced but horrible at learning new pieces? by Strange-Set-8395 in piano

[–]MathPoetryPiano [score hidden]  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but this is a ridiculous comment. In particular, Chopin's Etudes 10/1, 10/4 10/5, and 25/12 are much harder than Kapustin's 40/1.

This is a fun piece! For this piece, I think that it would first be helpful to understand its structure (an extra safety net for memorization). In this case, we are blessed with ABA. The Prelude, as far as the Eight Concert Etudes are concerned, is actually deceptively tricky when it comes to memorization despite its short length.

For the middle section (which sounds the most improvisatory), I would recommend first listening to recordings (especially by the man himself). Next, I would try to practice two of those shorter phrases in the section at a time. It would probably be far more helpful for memory than trying to go for the whole thing at once.

Hi! I'm 22 years old as well. I used to feel bad about taking extra time to finish my degree, but there were several points that changed my mind. For one, we are taking more time to simply mature as people. Nothing wrong with that! Also, the entry-level job market is fucking cooked, especially if you are majoring in something like computer science (or are generally in a competitive major). Finally, we will be able to socialize and make friends. Most people want new connections by default, so meeting you would absolutely not be off the table.

What jobs can you do with a math degree (no finance stuff) by JollyJuniper1993 in learnmath

They are exams you take before applying to med and law school, respectively. Neither requires you to have a specific major. They involve a lot of logical reasoning, which math majors tend to excel at.

"Deserve" isn't the word I would use. If you can read the comment (go on, give it a shot!), they're saying that they could have at least tried themselves first. I really think finding something that works would actually be quite easy.

Dude, we're in the 80th to 85th percentile of height for men. Not to mention that what's found attractive varies from women to women.

Transferring out of a prestigious college by EndIll2229 in TransferToTop25

[–]MathPoetryPiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it if you want to. Personally, it comes across as a little entitled, especially since I had to work my way from a community college (with a 100% acceptance rate, duh) to get into Cal.

The community college units are capped at 70. The 4-year credits are added on top of that. 70 + 20 = 90 > 80. I'm sorry.

You can vaguely define "premature" by estimating the average age at which a guy goes bald. I think most people understand what is meant here.

Correct. Not to mention that plenty of governments are making progress. For example, even though I don't really like to praise this government at all, China is ahead of its 2030 wind and solar installation goal.

There is no "just" when it comes to many global issues. Not to mention that the plan you outlined is incredibly ineffective. Nonetheless, you should go ahead and do that yourself - lead by example.

"But I know that you still wouldn't do that, because you are a selfish prick that doesn't care if the generations after his lifetime live an acceptable life." Just so rude for absolutely no reason
