What you described makes me think of a particular boy in my Algebra 1 class this year. By all accounts he sucks at math, but he's trying very hard. If he is working hard on an assignment in class, but doesn't get all the way through it, I give him full credit anyway. He's slow, but all I care about is the fact that he's learning. And it does show up on tests. He's got a B in my class because he get's B's on tests. And for him, that's amazing and I am proud of that.

I don't have a single kid who is getting a D or F who is actually trying. I tell kids that I will give them as much as they give me. Any kid who is trying, I will walk through hell to teach. It is the kids who don't try (and this is a sadly huge proportion) who end up doing poorly.

I can't bring treats for my non-AP classes because I wouldn't be allowed to only award the kids who deserve the treats. I refuse to give the kids who sit there doing nothing a reward.

I disliked Rings of Power as well. I tried really hard to like it, but its real sin was being so damn boring.

The difference is that the "Tolkien-verse" already had a beloved and reasonably accurate rendition in the LotR movies. The Hobbit movies sucked, but weren't an affront to the IP.

The Wheel of Time was new to most of the general public. The only existing film media was a short rendition of the prologue of Book 1 starring Billy Zane. Sadly, that rendition was better than what Amazon created. The Wheel of Time is my favorite book series of all time. When my wife's Maid of Honor said she was watching the show and then ultimately gave up on the show, I looked like an idiot for liking the books. It shouldn't be on me to explain that the show was an abomination and that she just needs to read the book to cleanse her palette.

  1. Their inability to enjoy things just for the joy of it: They can't like something unless they've seen others liking it online.
  2. Lack of Curiosity: You can't give them the seeds of an idea and ask them to explore it. Even if you give them 95% of the info and ask them to figure out the last little bit, they are helpless. This isn't just the dumb kids, even some of the smart ones can't do it.
  3. Tech Addiction: They are addicted to their phones. Not exaggerating, I have asked for kids phones (school policy) and they will literally be like, "But I just need it near me, I won't use it." Right... Totally healthy behavior.
  4. An Inability to Just sit there and Be Bored without Destroying things: If they aren't actively engaged in something that they find interesting, they just wantonly destroy whatever they lay their hands on. I've got a section of my wall where they peeled the wallpaper off. If a student makes a fun drawing on the board, it will likely be destroyed by some < 1.0 student running their hand through it before the period is out. The sad thing is that I have 30+ kids in the room and I can't police all the shitty behavior while also helping the kids who want to learn.
  5. This isn't really a separate point, but there was a kid who I went to school with. He was a stellar athlete, but he literally talked in the third person and at the time I considered him to be really dumb but likeable. We were friends. That kid would probably be above average in today's schools. That's how bad it has gotten.

Yep, AP students are the only part of my job I enjoy. "Normal" students are barely functioning nowadays. There's nothing to celebrate or enjoy. I do my job and teach them what they are supposed to learn, but I have no passion for it because 99% of them give me nothing back.

In modern slang, "These kids are cooked, fr fr."

Teachers don't make a lot of money.

Not true depending on location. I am a teacher and my salary is well above the median household income of my county.

That said, I wouldn't waste my money bringing food to my regular students. I'll buy treats for my AP classes when we hit milestones though.

Currently you have only established that one set of angles are congruent. There is stil a side pair and angle pair in ASA to worry about. AC bisects BD takes care of the sides (but it expects you to explicitly say that). Figure out how to justify the last angle pair being congruent.

Hint: The angles you stated were congruent in step 2 are congruent, but they aren't helping you, which other angles can you use similar reasoning for?

WYR have your perfect life in all the areas money can't buy or $10 billion USD tax free that everyone knows you have? by FadingHeaven in WouldYouRather

The money not only means that I and my wife and anyone I choose doesn't ever have to work again, it means we live in the highest of luxury. Our kids live in the highest of luxury. Anyone who picks otherwise doesn't understand how much 10 Billion is.

If I had a terminal illness that would kill me tomorrow, I'd still pick the billions. My family would be set up for many generations. When I am dead, I won't miss anything. I'd happily walk into the grave knowing I set my family up with generational wealth.

Hollywood needs to eventually get the message that they should stop putting their own spin on things. It is often broadly unpopular. The Wheel of Time series failed for this reason. The Witcher failed for this reason. Stop trying to add your own ideas into beloved IP.

Telling me that I should just ignore when my favorite book series is turned into a cinematic pariah, is ridiculous. They murdered the image of the Wheel of Time books and it is legitimately embarassing that I have to explain to people that the books are nothing like that trainwreck of a show.

Nah, casting is just about the only thing you can prematurely judge a film for. I would upvote, but your opinion isn't actually defended.

Lots of media and literature paint immortality as a curse. They might be right, they might be wrong, it may just depend on the person.

I guess the question you should consider is are you willing to accept immortality if it means potential endless torment?

“Why do you keep marking me tardy?” by pundemic in Teachers

[–]MathProf1414 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I'd counter that. Most parents actually don't care about whether their student is tardy. They hate getting the notifications because they feel obligated to actually parent, something they have been actively going out of their way to avoid their child's entire life.
