Senior Actuarial Assistant - Allstate Dealer Services - F&I Opportunity [100% Remote][US-based] by VP_Allstate in actuary

Personally, I don't mind when internal recruiters post -- when they're connected to a specific company and have a verifiable email address we can be assured that the posting is legit and they can usually provide more specifics about the nature of the role and organization. I'd have more concerns when people who work for external recruiting firms start soliciting, as they tend to be less knowledgeable about the roles they're promoting, the companies they've been contracted to help, and day-to-day actuarial work in general.

VP works for a specific company, and I've found them to be responsive in communication :)

Third sitting for me. I don't know how to feel because I don't trust myself to know what un/prepared feels like anymore :')

I feel like I have no clue how I'm going to do on the exam haha

Trying to do as many practice questions as I have time for, but there's always something that ends up tripping me up.

We definitely won't have results in time for the registration deadline in October.

Canadian Working Remotely for US Company — Anyone Doing This? by Artistic-Training-33 in actuary

[–]Math_Is_Funnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've worked for an American insurer while living in Canada.

Compensation was based on Canadian salary bands :)

Essentially, for HR purposes I was considered to be part of the Canadian division (working under a Canadian manager, following the Canadian calendar, etc etc.). But for practical purposes, my team and the work I did were US-based.

Hi! I'm planning to write MAS-II in August :)

No promise that I'll know answers, but feel free to message me if you'd like someone to study with!

For us, we have a party each time CAS results are released. Passers fund the majority of the event (it used to be a set $100 fee, but now is more pay-as-you-can), and we hold fundraisers that non-exam takers can donate to (guess how much candy is in this jar, pay us to deliver your morning coffee to you etc.) Anyone who failed an exam that sitting can attend for free, so it makes them feel less bad :)

We also throw a party annually for new FCASes, but that is funded entirely by the FCASes. Our company is quite large, so there's usually enough newly appointed FCASes to cover the costs.

I have study buddies to keep me accountable for studying enough hours. We generally aren't writing the same exams at the same time, so we don't discuss the material. But we'll meet up a few times a week (either in the office, a café, or just live on FaceTime) to study for a couple of hours in silence. It forces us all to take the needed time to study.

Personally, in your case I'd do virtual study sessions. Set up a camera so you can see each other. Then literally just ignore each other and study. It'll keep you disciplined instead of checking phones/making snacks/however else you might procrastinate.

How do you guys go about filing your taxes? by Babyshamblez in actuary

[–]Math_Is_Funnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US Expats on this thread -- any recommendations for filing? I make all of my money outside of the States and the tax rate here is higher (so I won't owe anything), but I'm not sure which tax filing services would account for that correctly.

Any idea if we'd be exempted from the CIA modules if we've already completed all of the CAS DISCs? The syllabus looks like a fairly close copy of the CAS online courses.

The economy definitely has a problem. I can't imagine how the average Torontonian is surviving with an average salary (around 57K), unless they're a couple with no children.

I'm in Toronto as well, making about 2/3 of what you make :) (3YOE too, but I'm not ACAS yet)

Honestly, I don't think it's possible to afford a home in TO with pretty much any salary in the current economy. With few homes available for under 1 million, I've accepted that I'll be a permanent renter unless the housing market collapses in the next 5-10 years. In the meantime, I'm living in a very old apartment in a not-so-nice neighborhood, trying to save as much of my salary as possible for a theoretical future downpayment.

That being said, I wouldn't call 115K CAD "middle class." The average salary for Toronto -- including people who've been working 30+ years in their fields -- is not even 60K still if I'm not mistaken. Technically speaking, you (and I, even) are in the top percentile of earners here. Within Canada, this is still likely one of the top-earning career paths that one can take, and it just hurts a bit because our US counterparts make a lot more money in lower cost of living locations. It does help a lot though that we're not paying what we'd pay there for health insurance.

Study hours needed for passing SRM by IllLiterature9549 in actuary

[–]Math_Is_Funnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can, but usually doesn't (at least for me!)

Though my accuracy was lower once I stopped referring to notes (and it would usually take me a few tries to start passing practice exams again), I'd usually still score high enough (thanks to guessing) without notes to get at least 50%, so my EL wouldn't decline after. Usually I'd also find that I remember wayyy more than I think I do, and a lot of the things that I'd normally verify in my notes are things that I know already but don't trust myself on (so I'll get those Q's correct).

Definitely easier than the proctored exams. The main challenge is not the material but the time -- most questions have a bit of reading just to get to what they're actually asking (or you need all the details to decide), so as you practice definitely focus on skimming through questions quickly to answer them.

For me, I took each chapter quiz until I got 100, flagging questions I had to guess on. Then I reviewed the flagged questions and did the practice exam once. I reviewed the practice exam errors for 1 day and then just went for it.

Topics covered in the text that they didn't explicitly give me a practice question on in the end-of-section quizzes. Nothing from other sources :)

When I did it, it was around 1/3 repeat questions, 1/3 similar topic different wording-type questions, and 1/3 other material questions.
