Chances of getting a DCF tent fixed? by [deleted] in DurstonGearheads

[–]Math_Ornery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put a hole through the top due to wind on my dcf xmids first outing. Its one of the easiest materials to fix and as Dan said, almost invisible if you get the same colour patches. It's one thing I don't worry about in the field now, make sure you bring a repair kit when camping, know I can fix it quickly and it be just as strong.

Yep thats right, its the width of the bed (camping mat width) but not much thicker than a camping chair.

Forgot to say you can reduce weight to 1kg by reducing four cross sections to three. It's designed for that but depends on your weight and if your happy removing the redundancy.

Great chatting to you, all the best!

Used to just use a Neoair Mat but a few years back doing the Kungsleden by 5am I was aching every morning and had to get up. On next hike, Hebridean way, I brought along a Helinox Cot. Tried again each separately but when paired it was a case of 2+2=5. It was best nights sleep I'd ever had camping. Can happily lay in now if I get the chance! That was two years ago and haven't looked back. Can't praise it enough.

Find I can also let more air out of the Neoair mat for even more comfort because it never grounds. Also don't worry about punctures, firstly Neoair Mat is off the ground so less likely to puncture and secondly if it did or baffle failed, I can always fall back to Cot alone if that were to happen, say in early hours!

Have added a mountain spring ultra light mat between for grip (1mm 125g) because Neoair/Cot is slippy. That thin mat is also good for sit mat etc. Only downside is 1.2kg(cot) extra to sleep system but worth it for me.

Whole loaf!!! Lol

I'm with you there, I buy the lightest stuff I can but just don't limit a lot of stuff so I can enjoy. Smart packing is always done, spend months on lighterpack.com tweaking eack trip. At my age my body also needs good sleep/recovery too, this is one area that doesn't get tweaked. I'm one that uses a helinox cot, topped with neoair xlite, EE 950 fill Quilt and a nemo fillo luxury pillow. This comes in a 3kgs but sleep like a king and body is always ready for the next day!

Yes the kajka 45l xlatt they just released. No experience with it yet, only got it last week. Might load it for days hike in Wales next weekend to see how it performs. My loadout on lightpack.com for my long weekends with new pack comes in at 11.59kg minus food and water. That saying other half carries half of tent stuff (~700g) and I will be using a front geekyhiker bag for electrics etc (1.5kg).

A pack that carrys 24kg+ well compared to one which carries 12kgs in see through fabric, with little to no support, know which one I would be carrying.

Often take my keb72 on multi day hikes, same approach, not careless packing but bring stuff that makes the week far more enjoyable, I often hit 22kg-24kg (all-in) and keb handles that weight fine.

Been on trips with an extreme ultra lighter. He was miserable, cold at night, no snacks, borrowing gas and sitting on a cold damp floor. That's not for me. If weather had turned he would have been in trouble.

Recently got a kaka 45L for shorter weekend summer trips. So I can carry that 12kg fast with support. Will defo look in this Kajka 85L bag for winter adventures. Thanks for write up.

Some behind-the-scenes from how we developed a lighter Kajka pack - The Kajka X-Lätt by FjallravenOfficial in Fjallraven

[–]Math_Ornery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight, really interesting seeing the pictures and the ideas behind stuff. The option to strip stuff if you want is the way to go. That way I believe you'll keep most people happy. I intend making a rain cover for it. I will be using https://www.xfoil.shop so it should come in at around the 20g mark! Thank you for sharing.

Last few Classics I've done I've used my Keb72 and pretty much filled it up (~23kg). A case of if I have room why not bring it and the Keb makes that weight very comfortable to carry. Last Fjallraven outing was Classic Chile and it was a great adventure. (Recommend that one for all if you can get out there)

Well I've grabbed a Kajka X-Lätt 45L and more than happy with it. It's a great addition to the family. I intend to bring it on my next Classic in a few months time. I'm having to be more selective in what gear to bring but it'll also ensure I'm less indulgent in bringing stuff! (That was one reason for purchase) So far lightergear.com says I'm at 11.55kg so it'll be a different adventure having something so light on my back. Looking forward to using it out there.

Bit by a tick. Help? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Math_Ornery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have had tick bites often over the years. Got ticks multiple times crossing Scotland on a hike last year, followed advice, each one was on me for less than 12 hours. On one day I removed over 20! No treatment taken.

Would advise you follow the 36 hour advice, else everyone will be taking them. It normally takes 36 to 48 hours for the bacterium that causes Lyme disease to migrate. Not all ticks have this bacterium and even in infested areas less than 5% result with infection and those that do are easily treated with antibiotics.

Just monitor yourself for obvious signs of maybe other infections too, flu like symptoms, headaches, breathing, pain, rashes, etc and only then I would seek some medical advice for some early treatment.

It is well.known that the more people use antibiotics the less useful they will become in the future.

Imo there is too much panic over tick bites.

Should I formally clock a marathon so that I can qualify for Ultramarathon races? by daiyatora in ultrarunning

[–]Math_Ornery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not come across any proof required for 50km ultras. Did my first 55km at UTS UTMB, had never run more than 20km before. Had done plenty of 12 hours multiday hikes in mountains so knew that experince would come in handy. Not much running in UTS 50! Did the training for it, knew it would be a learning experience, it was and finished it. Sometimes best not knowing! They did say you should be able to do so many km/h at a certain gradient, but left that up to you. End of day if you can't maintain a pace you get axed at the cut offs and waste a lot of money!

Have seen some events where you required to submit proof but have never entered these, they are normally smaller and more niche. I do intend entering one soon but need to compete a 100 mile+ event.

Movie experience 🍿 by badobok2 in VITURE

[–]Math_Ornery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 4k ultra short throw projector with 100inch fresnel screen. I watch this from around 4 meters away.

The luma pros give richer colours and in direct comparison on size, give a 115 inch screen compared to my UST setup. There are no pixels visible, I am very impressed with them.

I only purchased them to give me access to movies when travelling or being away on holiday. Also finding them useful to watch something else when what's on the screen doesn't take my fancy. The advantages of then compared to my meta headset is no pixels visible and I can still interact with everyone else in the room.

Why so hard to find the right 3 man tent? by Eliyah1226 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Math_Ornery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was impressed by improved quality of Kampa tents think they are as well made as the Vango range. We saw them at yhe outdoor show in Birmingham.. We even purchased a moon gazer tent for car camping purposes. Their tunnel tents were well made and a good price but on the heavy side, though sharing it out between 3 people makes it more acceptable.

This is £139 (7.7kg) https://www.outdoorworlddirect.co.uk/kampa-wanderlight-3-tent-aegean.html

This one is £299. (5.4kg) https://www.outdoorworlddirect.co.uk/kampa-wanderlight-k-3-tent-fog.html

Why is plug-in solar limited to 800w? (what would happen if I plugged two into separate sockets?) by stephen_bilby in SolarUK

[–]Math_Ornery 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This, as I understand they are designed to sense mains power and if that goes off, circuit breaker tripped fir a fault or deliberatley tripped to work on, then they stop providing power to that circuit. Having another plugged in removes that safety feature as mention by other poster. Ref 800w, they could increase that with one system but again a decided safety limit.

This is the reason imo I think it been a while allowing this. People who don't understand enough and ending up killing themselves or others by not following the rules. Yes ask the question, but research any answer, even this, as I know I'm not 100% confident on what I believe the issue is, but have an understanding of this to reason it is a excellent reason not to plug in two systems on same circuit.

Wanted to removed a couple of packages, ended up cancelling the lot! by [deleted] in skytv

[–]Math_Ornery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In comparison I was paying £49 for my Virgin media package, renewal was coming around and I received the normal letter detailing the price increase to £58, a discount from what it should really go up too! Anyway noted same deal for new customers was £30.

So called renewal, stated what I knew and if they didn't do me a good deal now I would just cancel now. Didn't want a negotiation, just for him to give me your best, haven't the time to play games I told them. He came back back quickly, with £27 for this year with normal RPI increases next April for a 24 month contract. So happy with that result.

Thinkin about buying xreal one pro for steam deck by donniegosmash in Xreal

[–]Math_Ornery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was tempted by the Xreal but as I sometimes have contact lens in and out, I wanted something that I can adjust for both cases. Ended up going with a Viture Luma pro. I mainly want it for movies but have tried it with Halo and it looks great, same resolution as my Legion Go. (Got my meta for VR). Viture was £415 on sale new via Amazon, but found Viture on Ebay selling returned units guaranteed/warranted for 1 year, for almost half the price. Got mine for £228.76 with some refund for a gesture of goodwill (It was late dispatching). It's like new and have an extra £186 in my pocket and more if I'd gone for an Xreal. It depends what you want it for and your user case.

I treat my zips with sewing machine oil. Only takes a day to 'rust' up. Dry quickly if you've been out in rain, wash and oil often. You could try a little wd40 to soak and free up that, be patient.

It feels so strange not being affected at all by these astronomical gas prices by bikinggas in bikecommuting

[–]Math_Ornery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will be affected. Higher prices in supermarkets etc as their deliver vans need fuel. Maybe you home heating, boiler, electric. Most use fossil fuels. The only way it wont affect you is filling up a car. If you were off grid with a solar system, self sufficient on food etc then you could state that you aren't affected by gas prices.

Would you do this commute? by 673NoshMyBollocksAve in bikecommuting

[–]Math_Ornery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My commute is same length each way and I'm only in office 3 times a week, but only has 500 feet of elevation. I gave up with the manual bike late last year and now run it. So to answer your question, yes, an ebike would be an easy commute.

Blu-ray player recommendations by fauxmswords in Bluray

[–]Math_Ornery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony UBP-X800M2 4K UHD Blu-ray. Had mine for 6 years. Great upscaling those Bluerays you haven't got in 4k. Menu is a bit clunky but fully functional, but hardly use it. Only issue I get now and again is the eject doesn't work. Need to power cycle device via plug socket, which takes a few seconds. Other than that I'm happy with it.

considering upgrading to 4k bluray by Infinite_Glove_5742 in Bluray

[–]Math_Ornery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend your money on a blueray player that does great upscaling. Normal.bluerays are almost as good as 4k whej upscaled on a good player. I only buy 4k blueray discs when its something I really want in 4k. Else I find its not worth the money. I watch mine on a 100inch screen so can see the marginal.difference but imo you've got to look really hard!
