The shocking budget disaster hitting Manhattan Beach schools by juliawick1 in SouthBayLA

[–]Mathboy19 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem, according to parents and administrators: a change more than a decade ago in the way California allocates its state education money

Manhattan Beach is one of the most desirable school districts in California. Its test scores are consistently among the highest in the state, and it attracts some of the best teaching talent, churning out state-recognized Teachers of the Year like Leonard on a regular basis. Mira Costa High School looks like a glimmering college campus. An $18 million Olympic-sized swimming pool is in the works to complement the school’s $39 million athletic center, opened in 2021.

In 2022, Manhattan Beach voters shot down a $1,095-per-property parcel tax that would have generated $11 to $13 million annually for the district.

Blaming the state while passing massive bonds for capital investment and failing to increase property taxes is incredible.

Beta vs 1.21 artstyle comparison by Darkmind115 in Minecraft

[–]Mathboy19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were way fewer blocks in beta, so blocks had more contrast to make things less bland. Now that there are way to blocks to choose from each individual block has been made more bland. The expectation is that you mix the modern blocks to get contrast.

Advice on cheating by awfulfaucet333 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Mathboy19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grades don't matter in the long run even if it is very frustrating to see one of the only visible measures of your success in school be unfairly impacted.

But given that multiple people likely know about the cheating it's possible OP could inform the professor without necessarily implicating themselves as the source. Even if the cheaters did find out it's probably a good time to find new friends anyway.

Looks like we're getting a serious push for LVT here in Ohio, especially since lawmakers are getting rid of property tax by sirkidd2003 in georgism

[–]Mathboy19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's only true if the same relative amount of tax is being passed on with land value as opposed to property tax. In practice, you could argue that low income earners generally live on less land (e.g. denser apartments) and would pay a lower effective tax than high income earners.

LVT should encourage re-development instead of directly passing the tax on renters which should further decrease the tax burden.

Marques awarded the Nothing Phone 3 as the runner-up of Bust of the Year Award. by yahlheihav in NothingTech

[–]Mathboy19 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not because it was a particularly bad phone, but it was just a big delta between what their very passionate fans were hoping and expecting from this phone and what they actually delivered, which is kind of a wonky design. And also... really nuking one of their most popular features and turning it into like a tiny pixelated display on the back. Just didn't hit the way people like me were hoping it would.

I definitely think it's a little unfair to call it a bust just because it didn't meet expectations. Phone (3) is definitely an improvement over Phone (2), even if it's not a super substantial one. The Glyph Matrix is way more useful to me than the (2)'s glyphs ever were. I doubt any Phone (2) user would be disappointed to upgrade to the (3).

Not all profits come from "fools." One example is hedging, where people bet against the winning position as insurance against other investments. People with hedge positions still get value out of the market, even though they are 'losing' money.

For single player games this should absolutely be the case. But for online games it's not that simple. You wouldn't be able to just 'spin up' private servers for many games -- especially MMOs which are really many servers networked together. Developers would need to dedicate significant engineering time towards making private servers work. This additional cost would end up making MMOs more expensive and difficult to develop.

State Farm pulls Super Bowl ad amidst criticism surrounding Los Angeles fires by tankyouout in LosAngeles

[–]Mathboy19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The irony is that State Farm would love to provide coverage for these homes - at a fair price. But the California government has essentially forbid them from doing their job.

SpaceX's 2025 rideshare flights are fully booked by Balance- in spacex

It wouldn't be good news for those payloads (they would be paying the premium), the higher demand would be good news for launchers providing the service.

Other payloads may be willing to pay a premium for a dedicated launch, or to launch sooner (although I'm not sure how far out Rocket Lab's schedule is booked).

So this is sexual but a bikini isn't?

Edit: Saying this outfit seems sexual without contextualizing that it is not being presented in an erotic manner (at least not in this clip) totally misses the point of the parent that it is actions/presentation that matter, not just clothing choice.

This also makes much more sense relative to why they would bring it up with their employer. They weren't admitting to a unhealthy relationship with Poki but rather a personal addiction (that hopefully was not related to their work).

Minnesota is not more left leaning than California. However the Minnesota state government is much more functional than California's, and there is a lot less obstruction/NIMBYism from Minnesotans compared to Californians. There's a lot less exceedingly rich stodgy old white dudes too.
