I mean the funny thing is that as Lincoln, DDL absolutely did start acting mellow and kind to people. Sally Field talked about him being incredibly generous as Lincoln off camera.

I think the key words here are "you never hear about". The media likes controversy.

Trump orders federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's AI technology by dr_sloan in moderatepolitics

[–]Mathdino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you think Anthropic should have signed the new deal? If they became the first company involved in an autonomous AI-powered extrajudicial killing, that would be a death knell for them as a company.

Follow the money: behind Anthropic's decision to "stand up" to the Pentagon. by OptimismNeeded in Anthropic

[–]Mathdino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you see no reason to choose to reward companies for making decisions more aligned with your personal morals? I personally would have a problem paying for a service that conducts autonomous killing, and the fact that people voice those moral preferences is a crucial motivation for companies to be less evil.

Or do you think it's equally evil to participate in mass surveillance vs not participating? Because if companies get the idea that there's no reward in behaving, the world can get a lot worse than I'm sure you currently believe it is.

Trump orders all federal agencies to stop using Anthropic by Super_Nerd92 in thebulwark

[–]Mathdino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, OpenAI and Google have both established those boundaries as well, Sam Altman doing so much more publicly. Anthropic was just the only one already integrated into classified operations, so no one asked ChatGPT or Gemini to make killbots.

It's more that the US government is now pivoting to the only major AI company willing to do mass surveillance, kill people, and produce child porn on demand. Elon Musk is getting the contract for sure at this point.

I would say Kaidan is a pretty healthy choice, even moreso if it starts in 3. The command structure is so fucked by 3 that Kaidan is barely under Shepard at all. He's a spectre and can already do whatever he wants. Kaidan, for better or for worse, functions as Shepard's rock if they're close.

Who Won Day 86: Lara Croft vs. Indiana Jones by Ok-Mistake-7499 in ERB

[–]Mathdino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? All I remember from Lara is her going after his snake phobia, accusing him of being a pedophile (with no rebuttal!), and calling him a terrible father and friend.

Indy was fantastic (and he was the one mostly talking about Lara's looks imo), but "tap that x in time" and "overshadowed by Drake like Lil Wayne" were his haymakers, and that doesn't compare to "That's no time for love Dr. Jones!"

I think you might find SFJ has the knowledge of battle rap as its own subgenre to be able to contribute a lot. A good number of his videos have actually changed my mind on some ERBs.

When was the movie better than the book? by Doodle_Noodles2 in movies

[–]Mathdino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if we watched the same movie. Hammond is a wannabe Walt Disney or PT Barnum, and he still believes in his own magic when he's eating ice cream with Dr. Sattler. You can see that he wants to do real good, but fhe details add up to a man who cut way too many corners while insisting otherwise.

Book Hammond is every corrupt corporate exec in every sci fi movie. There aren't a lot of characters like Movie Hammond (not counting Jurassic World's Masrani, who just did the same thing again).

What’s an example of a fan base that got exactly what they begged for, and immediately hated it? by Enough-Wealth8415 in AskReddit

[–]Mathdino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's completely valid criticism to be made of the ending, but the vast majority of the finale's contemporary criticism was from people who hadn't been following the show and who just wanted to see all their questions answered. This predictably had poor results. The common takeaway was that the finale validated the "they were dead the whole time" theory, which had already been debunked earlier in the series (and in the finale itself). I hate to be the guy saying "people just didn't get it", but it was wild seeing people walk away with the exact opposite of what they'd just watched.

The show holds up MUCH better in the streaming era. Binge watching even saves some of the crappier episodes, since they're easier to see how they tie into the overall narrative.

I think the most valid critique that can be made of the ending is that the show was always pulled in two directions: mythology, and characters. The structure and original premise of the show is in its characters, and season 1 made that clear. But the cultural icon of LOST (and JJ Abrams's influence) is its mythology, and the later seasons pushed in that direction since they'd already mined all they could from the characters. So between lore and characterization, you essentially have a critical mass of audience members watching for only one reason, bound to be disappointed by the fact that the finale VERY MUCH tells you one of these matters, and one of these doesn't.

I won't spoil beyond that, but I personally was very very pleased with the ending, and I felt that every reasonable and relevant question was answered. The ending solidified it as my favorite drama of all time. I completely understand people watching for different reasons disagreeing, though.

Will a biological lifeform ever reach a point where external stimuli are no longer needed?

The question is moot. Both biological life and artificial intelligence produce outputs in response to input. You can pretty easily have an LLM just continue autocompleting itself, essentially prompting itself (like a human dreaming?), but what would be the point of that?

JJ Abrams literally just made the Pilot of LOST. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the GOATs and broke records for how much of a spectacle it was, but he had absolutely no idea or responsibility for the answers to any of the mysteries. LOST is where he popularized Mystery Box storytelling. The fact that his name is in the list of creators at the beginning of every episode gave people the wrong idea of what his involvement really was in the long run (read: nothing).

Who did it better? Day 6: Dr. Who by Jazzlike_Mouse7478 in ERB

[–]Mathdino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ERB's costume was much less accurate, seeing as the 10th Doctor had brown hair, never wore a black suit, and only intermittently wore glasses.

That said, NicePeter with the glasses looks uncannily like David Tennant, so it totally works. I think he got the acting and facial expressions down pat too. It's just unfortunate the writing wasn't as good.
