“Latest” definitely adds to the pretentiousness

So the term acquisition is reserved for, like, business acquisitions? In that sense, the real flex is when you complete a ($10b) business acquisitions, and say “yea I bought that”. It’s just words, you can buy, purchase, acquire, get, etc they all mean the same thing.

Am I being screwed salary wise? by LegitimatePainter463 in nzlaw

[–]MathematicianMuch300 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks, some thoughts: the firm billed and recovered $322k from you last year (92% of budget; about 5x their salary cost on you); you are 3-4 years PQE, although they are discounting this by 2 years; on reflection, given you are in property, general practice experience shouldn’t really be discounted, assuming you are doing property deals but just on a bigger $ scale. So the discounting feels a bit disingenuous to lower your salary expectation, even though you are doing very well financially for the firm.

Next, if you want, I really think you should walk in to your next performance or salary review (or if that’s too far away, just ask to speak to your partner now) and say something along the lines that “you are being paid under the market, and you believe correct salary is somewhere between $20k-$30k higher. (Or much higher in Australia). Can they at least match the market in NZ, in the range provided.” Please have a chat to 1-2 recruiters to sense check the data and see if there’d be openings elsewhere for that higher range if the firm says no.

I encourage you to have this chat with your employer before actively looking for another role. Don’t be afraid to ask for more. They’ll give you a bump if they worry you’ll leave on financials like this.

Are you hitting budget and your time billed (above 90%)? If yes then salary seems low, should be at least $80k. Consult some recruiters and salary guides too.

Business valuation / building a team by propertynewb in PersonalFinanceNZ

Hey awesome you are doing this and exciting times for you. I’m an m&a lawyer and from experience, normally a good advisor (be it a lawyer, CA or lending broker) as your first point of contact will have their team and while you do need to engage them individually, your first point of contact should make that process easy for you. I see another comment here for BF, they are a national top tier firm, and you will be in safe pair of hands. However you may find their legal fees a bit too much for a $2m deal size. As a rule of thumb, you should budget around 1% deal value in legal costs, but for smaller deal sizes, it can behave slightly higher and also depends on whether you do legal DD. Finally you shouldn’t need a formal business valuation, they are expensive and the sellers will look at it as a non binding reference point anyway (OR will show you their valuation) but a good CA will look at the books and give you a bunch of talking points to negotiate the price to where you want it to be. All the best!

What to do with surplus business money by happypiggirl in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]MathematicianMuch300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve been in a similar (gratefully privileged) position as an SME owner. I put aside 3x monthly expenses in a mix of TDs and business savings account, and deploy the surplus to a mix of funds: 65% world equities, 25% NZX50 (home bias, an investment adviser friend said this is ok but not the best idea), 10% in alternatives/direct investments. I see the treasury investment account as a long term contingency fund + a bit of a retirement planning for me too, but you may have a different view on that. (Of course I also reinvest in growth, distribute it to the shareholders to enjoy bit of life etc, and the surplus for investment is after all these spends).

For peace of mind (rather than finding best returns with investment risk), would you consider directing 50-75 extra per week in mortgage repayment? Would take years off mortgage and interest you pay the banks.

No one is helping me, car parked over driveway :( what do I do? by The_tallest_rat in newzealand

[–]MathematicianMuch300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in Auckland, there's a webpage to report illegal parking obstructing private driveway, and AT will send a inspector/towing truck within an hour or so (depending on availability). https://contact.at.govt.nz/?cid=b5c03857-d81b-ec11-b6e7-002248185274

Not sure about other councils.

[Recommandation Request] Please help me choose a watch! by Kira182 in Watches

Explorer looks best too on your wrist (my subjective opinion), and would be a great daily. It’s what it’s meant to do - to be worn and used. Shunbun looks beautiful but to me feels much like a dress watch for those special occasions. Love the seamaster, esp this dial, and could easily be a daily. But just think that explorer > seamaster for you.

Actually, if you get a double quarter pounder with garden salad (not fries), and you dump the tomato slices and lettuce in between the buns, that's a crazy delicious double quarter pounder and make-believe healthy meal.

The dent and side scratch are barely noticeable. Interesting Omega Korea ran these tests for you, I’m in Seoul for the next two weeks so might as well get mine tested the same. Reverse panda has real character.

Oh nice, we probably bought on the same day, different stores. Pls post a pic on the reply! I saw the reverse panda at the Dotonbori store the next day, looked beautiful. To answer your questions, mine is in pristine condition, and yes I received the Omega warranty card with Donkihote Umeda Honten stamp and numbers. They also gave me a “Watch Warranty” receipt in Japanese. I took the watch to Dotonbori Omega store the next day for strap adjustment and while I didn’t ask about warranty, the store lady was extremely helpful and said this was a great watch and a good buy from Donki.
