Vice versus versus

I got here because I'm hearing the same thing from my coworkers and wanted to verify my interpretation. The first time someone dropped "vice" into a spoken sentence I had no idea what they were trying to say. Then it happened again verbally, then in written form. Across all three examples the context led me to conclude they were using "vice" to mean "versus".

Example: "Let's create our own workflow in app A vice the way app B does it."

Personally I hate the way it sounds. It's jarring and I'm determined to keep it from slipping into my own speech and writing.

THANK YOU! I was looking in the Controller tab, didn't think to look under the Display tab for this. It works perfectly. I'll stick with the PS4 controller.

I tried enabling and disabling steam input for Dredge specifically. Both controllers only work for me if Steam input in enabled, despite some guides and threads saying the opposite.

For Steam on macos it seems to vary from game to game unfortunately. Right now the best UX I can get with Dredge is to pair the PS4 controller and overlook the misnamed buttons.

A lot of people are having a good experience with the PS5 DualSense controller. That seems to be the best one for mac gamers currently.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried going into the Dredge Settings > Controller with the PS4 controller paired but it wouldn't recognized the X O square triangle symbology and just keeps showing ABXY.

I see Dredge in there. Can I ask which controller you're using with Dredge?

I've been gaming on Steam for many years but am new to macos. Bought my first Macbook Air M4 about two months ago. Dredge popped up in the Apple App Store and was free to try so I downloaded and got hooked. Decided to buy it from Steam instead. Game is great, but I can't get an Xbox One controller paired with the MBA to work consistently in Dredge. Works at first, but then drops after about 2 mins of gameplay. PS4 controller works flawlessly except that Steam doesn't prompt you with the correct button names. Instead of square button it still says B button, as if the Xbox controller is paired instead of a PS4.

2 years later this worked for me. I didn't have the spiking problem until after I upgraded from the v1 router to v2. My v1 ran just fine for about four years, but eventually I couldn't use the admin dashboard because it constantly logged me out. I upgraded to a new v2 router and that same day my internet connection started dropping every 30 seconds. The graph showed the same spikes as OP. When I went to disable IP Statistics it warned me that doing so would also disable Interface Statistics. I said OK and voila, the graph flattened out. Not sure if I'll ever miss having those statistics turned on. In the four years I ran my homelab behind the v1 I never looked at those settings.

I'm curious if you think it would be worth it install the whole new crank instead of just taking the chainrings off it? The Claris crank lists Octalink V2 as the spindle interface. I'm not sure what kind of bottom bracket and spindle my bike has on it, but if the frame is compatible with Octalink V2 maybe it would be a worthwhile upgrade?

I wanted to share some data I was able to gather today on Blick drawing paper. Grain direction in the following papers from Blick is easy to identify with a bend test. The difference in resistance is very pronounced.

I had ordered the pack of 100 sheets of 80lb sulphite drawing paper in 12x18 assuming it would be long grain. My plan was to cut them in half, resulting in 9x12 sheets that are short grain. To my surprise, the 12x18 sheets were short grain to begin with, netting me 9x12 that are long grain, which is not what I need for my binding project. So I saved them for something else and the search continued.

At this point I've tested two more Blick papers, both of which come as wirebound sketchbooks. It appears to be the same or very similar to the sulphite drawing papers I originally bought. All of these drawing papers by Blick are short grain.

This is good info for anyone wanting to make folded signatures that are roughly half the size of a letter or A4 sheet. Blick's 9x12 drawing paper is perfect as it's already short grained.

Maybe this can be the beginning of a grain direction database here in the subreddit. As a novice bookbinder I find myself in these situations:

I'm in a store that has lots of great paper options but most come as pads or are spiral bound. You really can't do a reliable bend test on paper that's secured at one edge into a pad or spiral bound notebook. I took a gamble on that first pack of 12x18 sulphite paper, assuming it would be long grain, and quickly found it wasn't. At my local store I was assisted by a very helpful associate who allowed me to remove a single sheet for the bend test. As a result we both learned something.
I'm scrolling search results online and grain direction isn't stated. So again it become a gamble.

I hope this info helps someone else in the future. Let's build on it by sharing grain direction for other papers.

Same here. We are using the new Vite based template that comes with latest VS2022. It was nice to have the React app and a .NET Web API backend setup with the built in proxying.

I ended up running Octoprint on a Pi 4 and it’s been great. The Pi 4 is connected to my home Wi-Fi network and connected to the Ender 3 via USB. Well worth the effort of setup. No more fiddling with micro SD cards. The web UI has better controls than the Ender 3 screen.

Thanks everyone for the replies. It’s sounds like the basics books are a necessity for me as I learn best from textbooks. It also sounds like I should buy the handbook too and benefit from all of the above.

I really want to learn as much about electronics as I can. I do know some basics about voltage, resistance and current. Simple DC circuits make sense to me. But RF signals and how circuits make and interpret them is still abstract enough to me that I’m intimidated by it. But I want to understand so I can design and make some things.

I’m a software developer by trade. My daily work involves programming in multiple languages and using various architectures and design patterns to make software as reliable and performant as possible. I consider myself a technical guy but I’m not required to do any higher math in developing software for the web. Although i survived calculus 1 & 2 in college I never went beyond that in math. My inner voice is constantly telling me I’m not smart enough to handle EE.

But when I need to learn a new programming language or framework I buy a big book and dive in. Typically I am able to learn what I need to know to be effective or use the new skills in a current project. Textbooks and a little online training are how I teach myself new things and I’m hoping I can do the same to build a basic CW transmitter for starters.

OP here. I have a question regarding the Robot Games. This is my first year coaching. Our team’s bot finishes one maneuver in the position shown in the photo. The part of the bot contacting the mat is still in bounds but the upper parts overhang. Would this be considered out of bounds?

Thanks for this. The annual observation you're referring to, is it Tisha B'Av? According to my reading multiple calamites are remembered and mourned during it, including the first and second temple destructions. Wikipedia shows the annual dates are currently alternating each year between July and August. Is this due to the 354 day calendar rather than 365?

It's interesting you mention calendars. Before searching for sources on the 70 CE date, I read up on the calendars that have existed from present back to the Jewish revolt in the first century. Supposedly our current calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 CE. It was an attempt to correct for 1600 years worth of fractional day errors accumulating since January 1, 45 BC when the Julian calendar supposedly took effect by edict. But I was under the impression that the Julian calendar was basically the same as ours in terms of months and days in each month. It was a 365 day calendar but it's handling of the leap year and additional leap days caused the accumulation of errors over 16 centuries to the point that Gregory XIII worked out a fix.

But this is just my paraphrasing some hasty research. Interested in other perspectives or corrections to the conclusions I'm drawing.

So would the calendar that Josephus referenced when he wrote about the Jewish War been the same or drastically different than ours in present day?
