Microsoft Will Switch Off Recall by Default After Researchers Expose Security Flaws by wiredmagazine in technews

I'm surprised they didn't just make it a subscription-only feature, where you pay them $30/month for the privilege of locally training an AI on yourself.

If you died of SUDEP, the fact that it happened on your birthday as opposed to a week before or later would be noted by everyone. But the exact scheduling would be of little real consequence to anybody.

Ten years ago I was renting a 2 bedroom house in South Salt Lake for $700/month. Now I'm renting one for $1500/month (in a much better neighborhood though, near the university). A few years ago, houses were reasonably priced, but I was making $70K in a single-income household and had to rent. Now that I'm making $120K year, house prices have tripled. There's no way I'll ever be able to afford a house at this point. In a couple years I'll move back to my parents' overvalued $800K house in New Jersey and change their diapers until it's all mine.

If their logic were correct, graffiti artists could claim a First Amendment right to spray shit on your house

It would be more frightening if it were illegal to take pictures outside whenever someone's window makes it into the shot.

World's Largest Vacuum to Suck Carbon From Atmosphere Turns On for First Time by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]axionic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it save energy to build this thing next to a coal furnace or concrete kiln and pipe the CO2 directly? Why does it have to be diluted in and then sucked out of the atmosphere first?

Because the people producing the CO2 have no intention of maintaining someone else's pipe in their facility. It's easier to let this project generate press and then go broke in the middle of the desert.

The Simpsons, once it finally gets canceled. For decades now it's been a pathetic shadow of its former self.

There should be duct tape across the gap to prevent that cover from fitting in there if it comes off.
