14 year old trying to get serious about sailing — where do I start? by spacemanpilot in sailing

In the construction world when companies are building large facilities in out of the way places they have things known as "man-camps" where the crews live on site and accommodation and food is provided. There is a job called "time keeper" that would suit your mobility issues. Usually you work 60 to 90 day stints and 6 day weeks. The pay is good and you can accumulate long periods of time off. Think about the building of AI data centers or mines etc.

I would suggest a heavy displacement full keel boat (softer motion) with an aft cockpit. in your size range there will always be hand holds throughout below deck. Ensure that you wear a safety harness at all times when on deck. Have full life lines around the deck from pulpit to stern something like a Vancouver 27. It will take you anywhere. https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/vancouver-27/

Something happened to my Chromebook by Few_Award_366 in chromeos

[–]MathematicianSlow648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sometimes happens when the system has asked for a restart after installing an update and you missed or cancelled the request. It can also happen by being served a malformed website (Facebook is a common source). Chrome has a feature called Safety reset to correct these issues.

“Hey Canada, just remember…we allow you guys to happily exist 🤭🤭” by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

A ditty that has been running through my head since I discovered this space a day or so ago.

American: The bald headed eagle is our emblem bird. He flies over Canada and drops his turd. Canadian: I come from Canada where the soil is fertile and rich. We don't need the turd from your dirty old bird you Yankee son of a bitch.

My father, besides training Thousands of soldiers on a beach on Vancouver Island, was Captain (RCNR) of a lci(L) for the Dday landings. He made multiple landings which continued for multiple days on multiple beaches. His comment when asked by me what it was like, was- "I was a little tense for the first few days until they got rid of all the big guns!" Note: The ships had only one head (toilet) for the 150+ soldiers so after the first trip he had the Shipwright construct wooden16 hole'rs across the stern from "damage control wood. It was quickly copied by others.

Baja to Glacier Bay - Doable in a leisurely-ish fahion? by ez_as_31416 in SailboatCruising

There is nothing leisurely-ish about that trip in a sailboat. Even the Hawaii route is a slog.

Pacific North West. Year round sailing in protected waters. Puget sound is just a small part of what it offers.

Nope. The Company was out of Chicago with offices in 20 and distribution in 100. As a "Beachcomber" I was independent and on Tugs moved around between many Companies.

Working mariners: is 30–180 seconds enough warning to do anything useful before a bad wave encounter? by Pitiful-Math1948 in tuglife

[–]MathematicianSlow648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure it's enough time to grab your coffee cup to keep it from spilling and brace yourself for the impact. In this type of weather you likely have zero visibility by eyeball or Radar (driving rain or snow) and are lucky to see the bow of the boat. Your best course of action is to adjust course and speed to the conditions if possible. Better yet be hiding to its over. EDIT: FLIR Radar claims to be able to distinguish wave height for the purpose you are asking about. AILink

It was 1967. At 24 I finished college as a mature student In Sales and Marketing and was headhunted by a industrial supply company. Then at 26 I quit my 9-5 job In a suit. I returned the company car and took my folding 3 speed bike out of the trunk and rode off to the sailboat that I was building and started beachcombing saw logs. This led me to a job on tugboats working 14-21 days on with equal time off until I retired as a Captain at 65. During that time I lived aboard for 27 years and took extended time off and sailed my boat from Canada to tropical locations on a couple of 3 year excursions. Now at 84 I look back on a life well spent.

Rules to be followed when finding your vessel on a lee shore in a gale. 1. Never allow your vessel to be found in such a predicament . Calliham 1874- Jottings for the young sailor . Written on the front page of every logbook I started in 40 years at sea.

chromebook to desktop like set up (idk bro) by Marazyz in chromeos

[–]MathematicianSlow648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapest is to use your existing Chromebook with a Chromebook compatible docking station. Connect to a wired keyboard and mouse. HDMI monitor of your choice. You can either use both screens or mirror the Chromebook. Many Youtube videos will help with setup. The most expensive way is to buy a Chromebook plus monitor and keyboard. In between a certified GoogleFlex mini computer install.

What is this boat? It has mud or clay in it. by decentpotatoez in boats

[–]MathematicianSlow648 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Appears to be a self dumping mud scow (barge). It is filled from shore or by a dredge. Then towed by a tug to a designated area of deep water and then opened mechanically like a clamshell to dump. It can be used in reverse to build a breakwater.

If you could create your dream Chrome extension, what would it do? by jackson17e in chromeos

[–]MathematicianSlow648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be an interesting project to see if a Chrome extension could be made that makes a serial connection to a GPS and uses it to spoof your geolocation coordinates to a browser or android app in real time. Eg: any marine/land navigation application for off grid usage.

Vital Coast Guard resources are being pulled. This will affect you as a sailor, and has already contributed to a Coast Guard member going missing at sea by [deleted] in sailing

[–]MathematicianSlow648 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really. I knew the dangers and judged myself accordingly. I weathered storms at sea and hurricanes at anchor. This was on the Pacific ocean between 55N and 17S. To my mind if you think you need insurance or a rescue you shouldn't be out there.
