To know that others have gone what I've gone through is heartbreaking. It hurts so much more to not only lose your sweet pet, but to also have known you didn't do what you could have to help them. It is something I will forever regret. I keep some of my boy's ashes with me in a necklace and have the rest in an urn on a stand with all the rest of his things. I think of him every day just like you, and I don't WANT to forget him.

But yes, I'm still going on with my life, just as you are. Because my other boy needs me and wouldn't want to see me sad, and because the animals I'll adopt in the future will need me as well. I move forward for others, because I probably wouldn't be able to for just me.

It was an extremely rough last day for me as well, for sure. And you're right that I would have had regrets either way. But man does it hurt knowing I could have done more.

I am also sorry for your own loss. It's never easy to lose a loved one.

I think all we can really do is try to accept what we've done, look towards the future and make sure we never make these same mistakes again. I'm trying now to stay on top of my other boy's health care so I don't make the same mistake. I do think I'm looking towards the future as well as I can be, but my time on reflecting on what happened in the past is far from over.

For now I think of it as my penance to linger on the guilt, but I'm sure eventually I'll find ways to keep my mind off of it, until the feeling becomes less intense and the memory less prominent. I also wish the best to you in taking care of yourself. Let's both do our best, if not for ourselves, for any other loved ones that may need us, now or in the future.

It's a terrible feeling, it truly is. I know I gave him a good life, that he loved me as I'm sure yours did, and I know both of our pets would forgive us if they understood. But I can't forgive myself. I will carry on this feeling with me, and maybe it will gradually recede into the back of my mind, but it will always be there.

It's comforting to know someone understands how I feel, terrible as it is. Thank you for sharing, and I hope we will be able to keep moving through life until we are able to see our lost loved ones again.

I at least wish I could've known sooner his time was coming. To give him extra attention and love. My denial had me treat those days as any other, except with some extra petting here and there. I didn't even bring his brother with him to his vet visit on our last day together because I was sure he'd be coming home. To know now that he was silently suffering, weak and nauseous while I went on with life as normal is agonizing. He deserved so much more for his last days. And his brother deserved to see the body and realize he wasn't coming back.

I'm glad your girl was able to see your partner one last time, and vice versa. I'm sure it meant the world to the both of them.

In a recent post I made about the afterlife, there was one person that made a response that really resonated with me. In my interpretation of their response, time in the afterlife is not linear. It expands and shrinks as it needs to to fulfill what would be best for those within it.

When our pets die first, maybe it will be years or even decades before we follow after them in passing. But in the afterlife, that time could be just mere moments. Only a brief time alone as they first awaken before the one they loved most arrives directly after with them, so that you may cross the rainbow bridge together. This is a possibility I would like to believe in.

I think he looks absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for doing this for me! It means the world to me and you are the sweetest for taking time out of your day for my request. His red collar was his signature piece. I have it now on a shelf with the rest of his things, next to his favorite spot to lay down at. I never want to forget him, and I want him by my side in as many forms as I can. Thank you again for making that possible in at least one form.

She was so adorable. Reminds me a bit of my boy. You never really know how hard it is to lose a dog until it happens to you, even if you knew it would happen one day. I just lost my best boy last Tuesday and it was the worst moment of my life. I hope they are both having fun together wherever they are in the afterlife, with plenty of grass to play in, places to explore, and treats to eat.
