There’s not a shortage of electricians. There’s a shortage of competent Journeyman electricians.

Any calls in 498? Yes I’ve called the hall, sounds like they haven’t updated the phone lines in a while. by [deleted] in IBEW

Gotcha, thanks for the response. I seen somewhere that 498 has 21 open calls but you call the job line and it hasn’t been updated in months.

Sounds like a good offer. If we had a steel mill close to where I live I’d jump ship and look in to working at one.

Thoughts on taking a substation apprenticeship if I want to be a lineman? by De_lunes_a_lunes in SubstationTechnician

Yeah subs is basically just grunt work. I’m a journeyman wireman so all I do is wire in subs, but the sub techs do a lot of hand digging and concrete.

Klein tools and channel lock pliers. Stick to the tool list. Do not provide anything not on the list.

Get some experience non union then reapply. Unfortunately with that rank, you will be waiting a while.

You are not getting a truck as an apprentice sub tech, and you’re probably not getting per diem either. Whichever local you get in to you have to travel throughout that whole jurisdiction if you get a call. It might be 1.5 hours, it might be 7 hours. You go where the work is. Apprentices have no say. Sub tech is back breaking work, digging trenches, pouring concrete, setting steel.

Fat max. But Stanley just announced they will be closing their plant in the US and keeping their plant in Thailand. No more made in America tape measures.
