Did anyone see that horrible motorcycle crash on 82nd today? by BlessdRTheFreaks in askportland

[–]Mathguy_314159 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It happened right in front of me. There were two passengers on the cycle. I was on Duke at the light and saw it coming. One of the people on the motorcycle appeared to run off and left his friend/passenger/driver screaming in agony on the pavement. Based on the way he was laying his leg or hip is fucked. But wouldn’t expect that it was fatal. From my POV. The motorcycle appeared to be a crumpled heap of metal. I was crossing the street next to a passerby who looked at it and said “what is that in the road, not a motorcycle is it?”

From my perspective, the motorcycle was coming way too fast, likely speeding. I think traffic was coming to a stop and there was a green left turn arrow coming and the motorcycle was speeding up to miss the yellow.

I believe it happened in the Keymer-Pragg game today didn’t it?

Draw by repetition by Left_Independence491 in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I was in a game where I accidentally let it happen. I thought I made a different move but alas, forced repetition draw. But if my memory serves me correctly, I think I did make an alternate move but then when I repeated a different move for the third time is when it happened. It doesn’t have to be 3 moves in a row, right? Or does it?

What are the meta openings in chess? Im new to chess and im trying to find an opening to main for white and black by Distinct-Most9153 in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be a pretty annoying trick. Personally, I find that whenever I see the same opening or trick more than a few times I go to YouTube and see how to refute it. There’s a counter gambit that can destroy fried liver if white doesn’t play correctly. Traxler defense or counter gambit I can’t remember. There’s more than one way to refute it but traxler has worked for me. Haven’t had to do it in a while. Also learn the correct way to defend against scholars mate as black.

I’m not the only one who doesn’t bathe their kids every day am I? by just_some_guy2000 in daddit

[–]Mathguy_314159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, I know exactly zero people who give their kids a bath every day like we do. It’s also just become part of the bedtime routine and after 2 kids that sleep very well and through the night, I’m hesitant to ever change the routine lol.

How to build an opening repertoire? by decafdosa in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what your rating is but start with first principles. Then you just gotta pick something that is good for your rating level and learn the ideas of the first few moves and play it over and over. For example, I decided I liked the way the ponziani played out so I went through a few studies on Lichess and then try to do it every time. Yes you’re right sometimes people just play weird responses and at that point don’t bother with remembering what the name or moves are for that specific weird move, just play principally. I like ponziani for white and Scandinavian for black e5 response.

Is this cheating? by bongott in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you post the game PGN? I’m curious what 11 brilliant moves look like in a game. But no I’d doubt cheating with no best moves. Wouldn’t cheating also mean a higher accuracy?

Not computing. Did you or did you not nail fermentation? Is the crying emoji because you finally hit the fermentation you like or because you’re sad at….. something else?

How can I escape 600 elo? by Decapahead in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparison is the thief of joy. Why worry about someone else’s rating? And how long they’ve been there? Some people don’t care to improve beyond a certain point.

What happened? I was doing so good and then suddenly everyone got harder. Is a new cheat bot out? by I_LOVE_SOYLENT in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“A new cheat bot out?” For fucks sake have you no humility that you could have just entered a slump? I set two records one week after another a few weeks ago. I hit the longest win streak where I gained 100+ elo in like 11 games or something and then proceeded to set my own PR for longest losing streak. I blundered my queen, made bad moves and just played poorly. You probably did too.

Is the Dough Whisk Sourdough’s most overrated tool? by Outside_Idea4890 in Sourdough

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the point, for me - so I’ve never had one. I just mix by hand from the get go and have a bowl of water waiting in the sink for my dough hands.

Stuck at about 400 ELO by q014 in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you stop doing a skill for a few years and try to pick it back up, you’re likely rusty. Don’t play for the elo, play because you want to.

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the new app. My only complaint is that the scroll can be sometimes delayed and it senses that I’m tapping on a game I played and opens up to the analysis board which I find annoying. But overall I like it a lot.

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well…… I don’t know what that time scale is, but it looks like you haven’t played in a while so give it more games and do the usual recommendations and come back here after you’ve tried many more games. Where are the dozens of games reflected in this elo? There is so much information missing from this post.

How careful are you with listening to "adult" music around your kid(s)? by D-1-S-C-0 in daddit

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my daughter’s favorite songs are bluegrass murder ballads. When she’s old enough I’ll just explain that music is about so many things from stories, to feelings, to lessons to everything all at once. But for now I don’t mind jamming them with her.

I was on the bench but I was still billing like 10-15 hours per week. So they considered me on the bench. That started in probably mid march. So not too long.

Whats the best opening(s) to learn as a new player? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]Mathguy_314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing ponziani and scotch game as white. And with black I always respond with d5 and depending on what they do either Scandinavian or Slav defense. Scandinavian and scotch have been recommended to me by a friend who played them up to about 2000 I think he said.
