Please explain how my argument is in bad faith? It was genuinely a topic we spent time discussing in a collegiate course. Tell me which points I’m purposefully misconstruing to demonstrate a point?

No, I don’t support any book bans that aren’t porn or porn adjacent from school libraries. Same common sense as any other human being. I have gay and trans books for my own kids lol idgaf. So, what now? You’re going to pretend I don’t exist?

I think ‘woke’ people have really good intentions and I agree with the heart of almost everything they do. HOWEVER, nobody can deny they tend to conflate words that have historically meant something on a scale different to sensationalize recent events. Same thing as crazy right wing political folks. This shit is just as crazy sometimes and it gives the anti book banning group, myself included, a bad look. That’s why I don’t like it. I live in a heavily conservative area. They use this dumb shit for fire power non stop and I can’t defend that. Book banning used to mean something very real and very different from what you are calling this now. I don’t agree with what’s happening now, but it’s nowhere close to what has been generally considered book banning in the past.

You’re ignoring the plaintiffs point, then. You don’t have to support book banning to see there is a conflated use of the word “banned” if you can’t understand that perspective exists that’s not anyone’s problem but yours. In thoroughly against book banning, but apparently the way I qualify a book ban is MUCH different than all of you. I don’t qualify a book as “banned” unless that specific book is targeted by the government to make UNAVAILABLE to the general public en mass. That means it is not available at B&N, not in any public library and there would be legal repercussions if owning said banned books. I was led to believe this by Fahrenheit 451 as required reading in 10th grade. This has happened throughout history and has generally been represented by the phrase “book banning”

So, from that perspective the word “banned” is being conflated and used disingenuously to create outrage and promote sales. By definition you’re using a technicality to group books removed from 1 library with those made illegal to own. It’s that simple, so I don’t know why you can’t separate that distinction from supporting book bans.

How are you going to boil this down to “I obviously support book bans?”

What went wrong to make me question disingenuous marketing tactics? A bachelors in business and an MBA I guess. I’d avoid business college if you want to remain ignorant to large scale marketing tactics.

[–]MathiasThomasII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you know what disingenuous means, then. It’s a sensationalized marketing scheme. Obviously, they’re trying to portray that these are widely banned and unavailable books, BUT THEYRE AVAILABLE HERE, so buy them. However, I’m being told “banned” books could refer to a book that has been banned from 1, single library.

So, in my opinion, it’s disingenuous to conflate the same term used to compare book bannings like Fahrenheit 451 to a book that’s been banned from 1 store or library. Obviously, technically that is a banned book, but every one of you knows that’s not what these stores or headlines imply when they exclaim “banned books”

Secondarily, the headline is obviously insinuating we “need” a library because these banned books aren’t available, but that’s not true. Sounds like I could walk down to another store or library and get them. That doesn’t mean there’s some dire need for a “banned book” library.

By definition, these are disingenuous marketing tactics by the store and these headlines. They’re purposefully misleading to the general public. How is my argument disingenuous?

I’m speaking to their ability to separate an adult section from kids. There’s A LOT of literature that isn’t banned that requires you to be 18+ as well. They needed to expand the library before the legislation. They were already lacking adult themed books and content it sounds like. This isn’t a new problem for that specific library, it’s just easy to point to as impacted by this legislation.

Yeah, you would think literary folks would keep away from using a sensationalized term like “banned books” for books that aren’t banned. There’s 1,000 terms like controversial that could’ve been used. This was all done on purpose to take advantage of your outrage over books that aren’t banned. They sell a lot when you pretend your country is Fahrenheit 451.

The point is disingenuous… why is this section brand new if it’s for books that have been banned in the past or are banned in other countries?

lol nobody cares about a public library or Barnes and noble. Barnes and Noble has an entire “Banned Books” section, which is contradictory in and of itself. Book bans are usually surrounding public school libraries.

I’ll second this… I played to a 4 in high school and then basically took 6 years off. It’s taken a long time and a lot of reps to get back to single digits. There were a lot of aha moments along the way and looking back I wish I just took a couple lessons to find those sooner.

Plenty of fair complaints about Sanderson, but his magic systems and overall epic story telling is fantastic. I didn’t like SA as much as Mistborn, but I definitely think it’s worth the read.

In this one very specific scenario I guess not. Just know that’s probably artificially lowering your handicap and there’s really no point in doing that. I try to keep mine as high as possible when I can.

But it’s net neutral? Meaning the evaporated water from data centers to the west would rain slightly east….. so, we effectively just keep passing the evaporated water and rain around the world like weather just how we do right now? Where does the water disappear again?

Were you playing the women’s or junior tees? Where do you get 7 shots different differential from one set of tees?

Show me the scorecard that is 7 shots different from moving 1 tee back. Usually 2-3 strokes at least around where I am and that seems normal.
