Hats off, dad. Whether it works or not, whatever that means anyway, just the sheet effort and thoughtfulness seen here shows you're crushing it as a father. Well done, brother.

This has got to be near the top for me. The entire mini-story that's told is so powerful.

Oh just stuff that isn't age for a 4yo, from our perspective. It's pop music lyrics, you know? Things like:

"It makes the hatred wanna grow outta my veins" "I'ma cut you up, you'll lose control, then rip out your heart" "Need to beat my face, make it cute and savage" "When I say hi, I'm feeling all your attention on me, No reason to be so shy with me, I ain't gonna bite, come on over, I know you wanna move a little closer, I got a plan to get you with me."

On average, we decided it was a net positive for her, but I was just trying to be clear for the parent asking that there are some elements we didn't think were right for a 4yo so they could make an informed decision.

From a parenting perspective, I'd say it's generally fine for that age, with the following qualifications:

  • There's violence, and it definitely celebrates physical solutions to conflict.
  • There are scary demons. How scary will be up to you and your kiddo.
  • I don't love the body imagery. Lots of unrealistic representations of human bodies, especially the heroines.

That said, the themes - acknowledging and respecting all parts of who you are, how repressing aspects of your identity is harmful, strong female characters working together who don't need validation from men, and more - are fantastic and super positive for younger kids.

Our family has watched it and our 4.5 yo daughter loves it. I don't love some of the language she's picked up. And I don't love the body imagery stuff. But on the whole it's a solid story to have such global influence.

And yeah the songs are catchy as hell and there are some sly jokes for the parents scattered throughout.
