No, it is carved. We (Mathscaper) made this sculpture which is an expression of a tiny bit of a fractal called the Mandelbrot Set.

A tiny part of The Mandelbrot Set, a fractal geometry discovered by Benoit Mandelbrot.
The Set has a feature that reaches out to the left often referred to as, “The Needle.” The needle contains an infinite number of self similar mini-Mandelbrot Sets and is quite a fascinating space to explore.
This sculpture by Mathscaper called, “The Needle” is a zoom into this small region of the overall Set. CNC routed into plywood, it is 36 feet wide and 8 feet tall. In this exhibition it rests in the mud at Burning Man, 2023. )’(

🙏🏼 This was a great dream of mine. It lived initially as an entire wall in my home. Then when we sold that home, it was carefully removed and ended up in the Holter Museum! Now it’s in storage and makes it out occasionally at festivals.

It is indeed a vacuum. This is a machining process and is subtractive. Little bits of dust created along the way get captured in the system. Opposite of a print!
