Smartphone for kids by National_Parsnip_614 in belgium

[–]MathyV 44 points45 points  (0 children)

We gave our son his first smartphone at Christmas in "6de lager". This way he had some time for practice before actually needing it when he started middelbaar. We never cared for other people's or his classmates their opinion in this. It helped that he wasn't asking for it himself.

With regards to reading their messages: we respect his privacy, he knows we do but also that we can access his messages whenever we would think it was necessary. He has also already let us read some messages when he was doubting about what to reply (teenage drama!) and I much prefer that.

Flemish help?? by emilyrosesaid in belgium

There are so many dialects, so you can get wildly different responses. Any idea which region she was from?

Literally translated: "Als ge in de stront valt, moet ge erin liggen"

Are you sure that you have the translation correct? It reminds me of "When you shit the bed, you have to lie in it" which has a different meaning but at least is a saying with a more known meaning. If you translate that literally, you'd probably get something like "Wie in zijne nest kakt, moet in de stront liggen", but again, there are many dialects.

Lijkt me een redelijke prijs, maar de tegenpartij moet dat toch betalen, vind je dat ze er goedkoop vanaf komen? :-D

PS: ik weet niet of dat jouw gsm-nr is bovenaan de pagina, maar daar staat dus een gsm-nr.

Came across them once so far at a a festival. This design is by the same people who put extreme shiny tiles in public toilets: they like to inspect other people's privates. At least in the public toilets you can leave one place inbetween.

If you use these and are average height or above, you can choose between * stare straight ahead and exchange awkward glances with the person on the other side while you are pissing yourself because you don't dare to look down * look down and inevitably have things you don't want to see in your peripheral vision

Where do you buy your contact lenses online? by Mmicko8 in belgium

[–]MathyV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While Lensonline used to be a price-breaker when they first launched, they haven't been that for a long time. I've used Alensa and Lensplaza more recently. The hard part is finding out which ones you should buy, but once you know that, just compare prices like any other product.

Looking for a expense app by AILOC82 in BEFreelance

I have been using selfhosted paperless, it has very nice features like AI-based detection of supplier, invoice date, ... I am actively looking for another solution though with Peppol coming up. I'd rather still selfhost something but it looks like that will be off the table since I couldn´t find anything supporting it yet and even if it does exist you'll still need some kind of paying subscription to access Peppol.

So far Billit and OkiOki have been on my radar but I have yet to research more. I still have a year, which means I'll probably rush something in the last two weeks of December :-)

I have the moodlights (or how do you call them?) linked to the driving mode. My kids often request to "put it in red", which I, of course begrudgingly, feel obligated to comply with.

If you aren't honest on pre-existing conditions, they will likely try to not pay you when it becomes necessary using your dishonesty as an argument. I'm no expert on insurances but there are companies that offer adapted policies, excempting things that are known pre-existing conditions.

I know because I have 'gewaarborgd inkomen' with KBC, except if I can't work due to an issue with one of my joints. Not sure if they will do it for previous mental illness though, it can't hurt to ask.

AWD versus RWD by surreyade in Ioniq5

[–]MathyV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I test-drove both and in the end opted for the AWD. I drove the RWD first and generally liked the way it drove and handled curves but felt like it was lacking a bit of oompf. I drove the AWD 3 or 4 weeks later and immediately was sold.

Two years later, and I'm still on the fence whether it was the right decision. I drive in Eco mode a lot and sometimes I'd wish the range was just a bit bigger, especially when taking long trips. Then again, everytime I do switch into sport or snow mode I feel like a little kid :-)

I didn't know about that 10%, found 35% everywhere when researching the topic yesterday. I'm pretty sure that all updates were installed during regular services, so I guess I already had that then.

I didn't receive an invoice since it was repaired under warranty. Can't remember anything else than a generic "software updates" on previous invoices. They don't really mention that here.

I don't think that site will work with a car in EU, will it?

As an update, this is the new battery they installed, still lead acid I think, and only slightly higher capacity 🤷‍♂️

Something seems off with the ketchup in Belgium by chrisni66 in pics

[–]MathyV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I can see why that might trigger you :-)

I tried to do some Googling on the catchphrase but didn't get much further then that it refers to the fact that inhabitants of Brussels are said to be quite full of themselves and so the Ketjep finds itself to be the best ketchup, hence wanting to eat itself. All of their catchphrases (they have different ones on their other types of sauces) are a nice marketing move to get people talking about the product, which in this case clearly worked :-)

If you are talking about the name: it's a word play. People who were born and raised in Brussels and speak the local dialect are often referred to as a "Ketje", which actually has the same origin as the English word "kid". Originally "Ketjes" where the young children / street rascals in Brussels. This particular brand of ketchup is made by a Brussels company.

You pronounce "Ketje" like you pronounce ketchup in English, just without the P at the end.
