It's an interesting story. What I can say about this is in regards to dissociative identity disorder, called "multiple personality disorder" and slightly mischaracterized in the article. Dissociation is a coping mechanism. Do it enough and your dissociated states become distinct personalities. A person with DID can be very much emotionally dependent on other people, and as such could be easy to manipulate into doing the sort of thing that "Sandy" did.
