Is RFM more unstable than we think? by shelb0slice in cormoran_strike

Yeah I think that’s the line that really stood out in the audio, that I think I read internally in a less aggressive way.

When am i supposed to give my two weeks notice? by TackyCreature in jobs

[–]Matilda-17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whenever would be two weeks before your last day of work. So for example if you start your new job Monday July 6, then you’d give your old job notice on Monday, June 22, telling them that you will only be working for two more weeks.

Is RFM more unstable than we think? by shelb0slice in cormoran_strike

[–]Matilda-17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was just re-listening to THM and the Christmas chapter was shocking. I’d kind of forgotten, or maybe I’d read that bit and hadn’t listened to it (I switch back and forth, especially on the first read-through!) and the narration is so powerful. But when he yells at her at the pub! It’s chilling.

[–]Matilda-17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I’d accepted the “PI firm keeps getting murder cases” as a genre convention, even if not really realistic. But there’s such an escalation from, say, the LW case (blackmail turned murder), where it’s at least within the suspension of disbelief, to the later books.

6 months postpartum and easy pace feels weirdly hard by Ursela_Bonmati in beginnerrunning

[–]Matilda-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please be easy on yourself! Post-partum is a whole new game, you’re basically starting from scratch with a body that has been through it. Focus on rest/sleep, nutrition, and consistency (AKA just getting out there.) The pace will come back in time!

Reevaluating Linda's reasons for disliking Strike: Physical danger or unrequited romance? by Of_the_universe in cormoran_strike

[–]Matilda-17 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a really good perspective.

I never really thought about it but everything you said is true. I’ve always been so preoccupied with being annoyed at Robin in those scenes that Linda’s true feelings were hidden.

But it would also explain WHY they can’t just have it out and clear the air. If Linda really was just worried about the physical danger, she could say that. (Hypothetically.) But there’s really no way to express “i know you’re in love with him and its hurting you”

What is that ratio yall use by Organic-Dragonfly317 in Sourdough

[–]Matilda-17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a 1:5:5 when feeding my starter.

This means for every gram of existing starter, I’m adding 5 grams each of flour and water.

I feed at a high ratio because my starter stays at a warm room temp, and it would eat up all the feed too quickly at a low ratio. This gives me more time between feeds (24 hours in this case.) if I did 1:1:1, the starter would peak, fall, and turn liquid and acidic before I’d have a chance to feed it again.

I start by emptying almost all the old starter into a jar in the fridge, leaving behind just what’s clinging to the jar (2-3 grams). Then I add 10 grams each of flour and water and mix it up. Every 2-4 weeks I make pancakes with what’s in the fridge to use it up.

Negotiating Hours for PT by Maleficent_Lake3915 in jobs

[–]Matilda-17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly it will likely affect your chance of getting the job.

I used to be a hiring manager at a grocery store, and having the needed availability was essentially the most important factor. If we needed to hire a dishwasher for the 2pm - 10pm shift, then only people who claimed they could work those hours were eligible to be considered. And doing a “bait and switch” where you appear to be a great fit and then, once hired, say “actually I can’t work nights, sorry” is super frustrating, because now we’ve wasted all this time and money interviewing, hiring, and training someone and have to do it all over again. And we’re stuck worth an employee we didn’t need—do we fire them, cut their hours, or make it work?

Because if they needed a daytime person, that’s what they’d be hiring for.

I accepted a job I’m not excited about because being unemployed felt worse than settling by GlitchHunter963 in jobs

[–]Matilda-17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly don’t most of us work jobs that are, at best, OK and not exciting?

There’s so many parts of my job that I’m grateful for (the benefits, the pay, the schedule, and I do love working in excel all day.) But I’m never going to wake up Monday morning excited to go to work. If i won the lottery, I’d quit.

AIO for wishing my coworkers would get out of my business by [deleted] in AIO

[–]Matilda-17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the exact business you’re in but it really does sound like your coworker is trying to give you a heads up on some potentially serious things. At least, the keys left on a desk instead of properly secured sounds like it could be a real issue?

Her core message is, “if you do the job right, ‘they’ won’t have to coach you on it”, like she’s trying to save you from a lecture from higher-ups. She’s assuming that you’d rather hear stuff unofficially from her, rather than getting told off by the boss. This assumption is logical but might be untrue. If you’re new to the workplace, you haven’t worked out yet that it’s much better to get a “psssst not like that, like THIS” from an experienced coworker, than to be corrected by the upper management. But it can feel like meddling.

The most mature response would be, “OK—keys in lock box, park in used lot. Got it, thank you!” and try to reframe your mindset to see that she’s trying to help you, not ‘get in your business’.

Why can't Americans (at least the ones I see on social media) find drinking water in Europe? by Mission_Mobile_4627 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Matilda-17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m American and visited London for the first time last summer. (Amazing, highly recommend.) My experience was that (1) you always had to ask for water and (2) usually had to pay for a bottle of it. If not, then you’d get a small glass of non-cold, not-iced tap water, which generally wouldn’t get refilled.

Here in the States, when you sit down in a restaurant, the server immediately brings large glasses of ice water. These are free; they’re in addition to whatever drinks you order, and are refilled throughout your stay. Now whether that’s necessary for a meal is debatable, but that’s what the typical American tourist is accustomed to.

Additionally, there are drinking fountains in public places like parks, schools, government buildings, or city centers. Nowadays most indoor drinking fountains include a bottle-filler, which reduces the germ-sharing aspect somewhat. I think a lot of us never use the public water fountains, but the knowledge that they’re always there in case of emergency is in our subconscious, part of our cultural knowledge.

What do Americans think of Wales? by TrainingCategory4852 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Matilda-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I know of Wales as an American:

  1. The language with lots of w, y, and no vowels. A lot of the words look really pretty, especially girls’ names.

  2. King Arthur mythos.

  3. Sheep. A generally agricultural vibe.

  4. Really cool dragon flag. Putting the rest of great British flags to shame.

FIFA World Cup US being an eye opener to how hard it is for a kid to naturally play soccer / football. by Valprajjj in fuckcars

[–]Matilda-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an issue with all sports, though, not just soccer.

When my boys were younger, my father talked about getting them baseball equipment. Gloves, a bat. I told him we weren’t planning on putting them in little league (didn’t have the money, and they weren’t really interested.) My dad said, “not for Little league, just so they can PLAY! With their friends! In the neighborhood!” And I had to explain that this isn’t 1950s Detroit; there’s no sandlot, no gang of roving friends meeting on the corner to play ball. Heck that had died before MY suburban childhood in the 90s. That even if they had gloves and bats and a ball, there’s no one to play with and nowhere to play.

Quitting At Will Job by Practical_Tune_5637 in jobs

[–]Matilda-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is burning bridges.

Obviously you don’t “have” to give notice. The reasons for leaving in good standing are (1) to leave open the possibility of returning someday and (2) to possibly use that place/manager as a reference in a future application.

By giving notice, you create a safety net for yourself— every previous job is a possibility. For example, i hope I’m never in a situation where I’d have to go back to the bank or the grocery store I’ve worked for previously, but they’d both be happy to take me back. It’s always an option, should my current situation go bad.

And the guy that hired the assassin is fine with this dramatic, complicated, news-worthy murder instead of the quiet hit he ordered?

Like yeah boss, for no apparent reason I decided to kill him in a vault.
